When I compare the X61s with UltraLight and my older X41, the X61s LCD is obviously brighter and has other advantages to my eye. But one thing I notice is that on white and single color backgrounds there is an almost 'pixellated' (for lack of a better term) or dotted appearance to the X61s screen compared with the cleaner, homogeneous look of the same background on the X41.
Can anyone confirm (or guess) whether this is a characteristic of the UltraLight LCD only or of all X61s screens?

Grainy? Yes the ultralight screens on the x61s are known to have some grainy appearance.

Yes, that's the word I was looking for, grainy.
So does that mean the X61s without Ultralight do not have this same grainy appearance? -
I believe it is regarded as better looking. But I am not sure if it completely lacks it.

i've used both displays side-by-side simultaneously and prefer the standard display. yes, the TMD ultralight is brighter, but the standard display has slightly better color quality and viewing angles.
if you see dithering in certain colors then it's because notebooks use 6-bit displays and simply cannot reproduce all colors correctly. this phenomena is different than grain but will make a display look grainy under certain conditions.
X61s UltraLight screen 'pixellation'?
