Has anyone tried this combo? I don't recall the 5300 being an option on the X61s. I currently have a 3945 and want to replace with a 5300. I do realize I need an IBM FRU but just unsure of whether even ordering one that was offered for the X200, it would get past the dreaded 1802 error.

If your X61s has 3945, then it is more likely that your X61s only has 2 antennas build-in. So I would recommend to get a 5100.

Even you got a 5100 with FRU, the X61s BIOS still won't recognize it. Try Google Zander and ThinkPad BIOS, that would lead you to the answers.

Fair enough, I have a 5300 on order just to try anyways.
It has the third antenna internally already, it's tucked away but it's there.

i have a 5300 in my X61s but also have a modded BIOS.   so far i haven't been able to tell a single bit of difference between the 5300 and the 4965 that it replaced.   in fact, i'd almost say that the 4965 connected better and ran slightly cooler.   given the choice, i'd run a factory BIOS and a 4965 with a lenovo FRU.

without a modded BIOS, there's absolutely no way your 5300 will function.   on the positive, you won't need three antennas until you try to run N at 400 Mbps.   ~270 Mbps N will run fine with only two antennas.

Not good news, but oh well, i guess i'll just sell the 5300 or trade it for a 4965 then. Thanks for the info
