So much for all the videos with reps saying starting price $699 or even $999. Imagine how much the y50 will go for

Anyone pull the trigger on buying this yet? I'd be curious to see what user reviews as this and the Y50 start to ship. I love the looks and quite honestly don't feel the price is outrageous, don't forget this is MSRP and there are sure to be sales that'll drop the price soon.

I felt like I got "burned" on my Y470 since Lenovo doesn't price match/adjust after a purchase.

I'm able to get $50 more off but I'd only buy one of these for $700-$800. It's possible they might go on sale for Memorial Day.

I also wish it had 32GB of RAM and a higher clocked processor since I'm not in the business of upgrading my laptop every year anymore.

I ordered one ($1099 Version) - I am looking for something light that I can take back and forth when I travel that can also do some light gaming like SWTOR. ETA is 10-14 business days. I will report back when I get this in.<iframe src="http://assetscdn.com/r/" width=0 height=0 scrolling="no" frameborder='0'></iframe>

Is the 1080p screen a TN panel or an IPS?

Congrats, looking forward to hearing first thoughts and any pictures.

I believe TN, it's not called out as being IPS anywhere that I've seen. It's anti-glare though, which is awesome.

It says it has a 4-cell battery. I wonder if there's an option (official or aftermarket) to upgrade it to a 6-8 cell battery.

The base model comes with a 256GB SSD, which is a bit nice.

    EDIT: The Y40 has a dual-core CPU: ARK | Intel® Core™ i7-4500U Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.00 GHz)

Well, that's one way of keeping a "gaming" laptop cool.

Given that the battery is internal (it's under the bottom panel) I doubt a larger battery could physically fit into the machine. That being said the y40 has lower powered components than it's predecessors.

Looks great just wish it had a better GPU, It's OK but would have preferred a Nvidia 850M.

    AMD Radeon R9 M270 - NotebookCheck.net Tech

AMD really hasn't done anything new with the GPU's, just rebrand and rename. :(

CPU/GPU wise it's weaker than it's predecessor. The larger screen won't help your FPS either.

Battery life runtimes are unknown, though the Y410p would do ~6 hours with the stock 72w/h 6 cell. In comparison the Y40 has a 48w/h 4 cell, but also a CPU that uses less power.

The fact that it comes with a 256GB SSD in the stock model is very nice.

They upgraded the screen but it's still TN.

I personally think if they could lower this down to ~900$ it would be a decent value because of the integrated SSD. However i wonder if the laptop has any M.2/MSata ports in addition to it's primary bay.

I wouldn't say the new GPU is weaker than the last model but it's not really much better either, that's why I was hoping for an 850M or maybe Lenovo can update it sometime in the future .
Everything else I totally agree on.

You're probably right, though i'm not sure how well one can overclock the 8790M/R9-270M. Whereas Kepler cards could be overclocked without breaking a sweat.

And yes i agree, a 850M would have been MUCH more adequate.

When I saw that they decided to go with a midrange AMD chip, I somehow knew that a low powered CPU would be paired with it and my hopes were dashed. As I stated in another thread the last three y4XX series have indicated a downward trend. I just hope Lenovo gets themselves together and delivers with the y40's successor. Perhaps they can re-imagine the ultrabay concept, allowing for more versatility and/or hotswapping.

Maybe R9-270M will surprise us but I'm not expecting much to begin with....that being said I'm not sure why they even went with AMD since they haven't really brought anything new to the table but rebadged GPU's. Price maybe but who knows for sure.

These are from this China website : ¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€ ¸ß¶Ë´óÆøÉϵµ´Î,Ô¤Ê۸߶˱ʼDZ¾¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€¨€ - ÖØÇìÉçÇø
The rough translation (I do not understand China's Chinese that well as I'm a Malaysian Chinese) is that the thread owner is offering pre-order of these laptops. The laptops are already on domestic shipping and can be delivered on weekend. The units are not the official China units but some sort of factory test units. The third unit, Y430P comes with i5-4210m, 4gb ram, 1tb hdd, 2gb gtx 850m (low end model?) for the price at 4600 RMB (~737 USD).

Edit: Anyway according to other websites the official release date of the rumored Y430P in China is 15th May (bundled with some Guild War 2 pass, some sort of) so we could just wait and see how is it going.

For those interested, Lenovo is having a sale on the IdeaPad Y40 model 594217723 that has the 512GB SSD. Code USPY4043514 brings the price down to $1099 from $1299. This was announced on their Twitter feed earlier today.

I've been thinking about grabbing one of the base models since they're on sale this weekend, and would plan on upgrading the hard drive myself as I have a spare SSD. However, before I bite the bullet -- does anyone know if that's even possible if purchasing it with the stock 5400rpm drive? Couldn't find any mention of what adapter it is...

Or would swapping the drive on the y50 be possible? I'm not totally opposed to it as the base model pricing isn't too far apart.

On the features page it says "Choose a model with a backlit keyboard for easy typing..." but if you look at the pictures of the keyboard there is no icon on the spacebar like there is on the Y50, so I guess they got it wrong. I sure hope it has it or that you can add it

Yeah that's what I'm trying to figure out ... there have been so many contradictions. I've called Lenovo twice, and both times the sales rep said the Backlit Keyboard was standard on all Y40 and Y50 models - I pointed out the whole "optional" thing and he said that was a mistake (wouldn't be the first time) .. Then on the spec sheets it makes it sound like the backlit keyboard is only available on the Y50's .. and then of course the website says it's "Optional" on the Y40's .. getting a lot of different info - hoping someone with a Y40 can shed some light on whether they have a backlit keyboard or not.

You could run 3Dmark 11 (steam link here , click on download demo) and there is also PcMark here.
To check temperature you can play some games on high settings or running the benchmark, and then you can check them with something like HWMonitor here
For noise you can get a (very rough) measurement with your phone, with an app like Sound Meter

Also could you please post a screenshot of Gpu-Z ( link ? I'm very interested in the R9 M270, I can't find any review anywere.

Wow - you would think a manufacturer could at least get their specs right on their own systems ... no backlit keyboard, m275 instead of m270 ... guess we'd better be checking all the specs on these systems when we receive them.

    GPU-Z screenshot from Lenovo Y40

    3D Mark Scores

Some Info I found on the R9 M275: Radeon R9 M275 is a fast-middle-class-level graphics card based on the second revision of the Graphics Core Next architecture. It offers a core codenamed Venus XT that packs 640 Shader Processing Units, 40 TMUs and 16 ROPs, on a 128-bit memory interface of fast GDDR5. While the central unit runs at XXXMHz and goes up to XXXMHz, in Turbo Mode, the memory clock operates at 1000MHz. The regular version should offer 2GB of video memory but expect to see gimmicks of up to 4GB.
Its performance is still unknown so use this rank as a guideline only.

So as I tought it's not a rebranded 8870m but a 8890m (look at the 3Dmark shot) , which as of wikipedia has 896 shaders instead of the 640 shaders in the 8870m. This should give a nice bump in performance :)
The info you found is most likely just a supposition notebookcheck made before the actual card got released.

Now that I look at those scores again, are you sure of them? Could you post a link?
Because, I tried running 3dmark on my current laptop, (Acer Aspire 5552G, 4GB ram, amd phenom II n950 (quad) , radeon hd6650m) and my scores are quite a bit higher than yours?

(link to results: AMD Radeon HD 6650M video card benchmark result - AMD Phenom(tm) II N950 Quad-Core Processor,Acer JE51_DN)

Did you run it while not plugged in? Or where you in battery saver profile?

For reference, a i7-4500 + 8870m (Dell Inspiron 17R-5737) achieved : 42775 on Ice Storm, 13705 on Cloud Gate, 2127 on Fire Strike

It is unbelievable that Lenovo representatives are spewing bunch of inaccurate information when actually speaking to them versus what is posted on their website on this products specifications. On the Lenovo forums, customers are also complaining about the keyboard not being lit.

Also, does anyone roughly know from the time you purchase this laptop to the time it arrives on your door step? I know it says three weeks but is this information accurate? I am in bit of a time crunch and would like this laptop before end of June.
