Open up your Catalyst Control Panel - > Power -> Switchable Graphics -> and from there it should be self explanatory. You can specifically set the game/application u want to either run with dedicated graphics/high performance or power saving/integrated graphics.

And yes it normally would switch, only if the laptop is plugged in.

Does anyone else have an issue with the AMD System Monitor showing the gpu at 0% all the time?

And is showing 0 dedicated memory normal?

always shows 0 on both whether in game or not, however the switchable app monitor in the catalyst shows that the games i'm playing as "High Performance" mode

You do realize that's an auction, and not an actual price to buy the system?

Yeah but it is still $60 cheaper than the price on lenovo's website with only one bid on it.

Hey guys. I'm looking at buying a y40 and I was wondering if someone could give me an idea of what the battery life would be like?

I think the battery life is one of the best things about this laptop. I unplugged it at work around 5:30, took it home, played some Hearthstone, downloaded some tv shows, and cruised around the web, installed the Catalyst newest beta, and the battery just hit 7% (just about 5 hours later).

The problem with this laptop is three-fold:

    1) The U-series chip seems to always be running slow to save battery life. As far as I can tell, there is no way to adjust this.
    2) There is no msata port, at least if you buy a hybrid drive. If I could go back, I would absolutely splurge the few hundred bucks more to make sure I got a pure SSD.
    3) The drivers stink. Sometimes the synaptics driver uses 4-5% of the cpu....for the friggin pointer. You know that can't be good. Also, AMD's graphics drivers seem to always under-perform. For example, Catalyst will not let my set my browsers to "High Performance". Why can't I have my browser set to use the GPU? Do browsers not run graphics-intensive applications?

If I could correct even one of those items, this laptop would rock. So, at least get one with a pure SSD and make sure you have an acceptable experience with this laptop.

I guess I can't too much.,,,mine was free from my company when my last laptop died :)

Is anybody else's screen flickering on low brightness settings on the Y40? It is also very noticeable when the screen displays dark colors or when the setting is at 20% to 70%.

Hey guys, i got my y40 two weeks ago. To be honest i don't really like it. It seems to be a lot slower then it should be. Another problem is the keyboard. I'm curious, does anyone else have problems with the keyboard, particularly the space-bar? Its not responsive to all of the key strokes. For example if i press it from the corners, it doesn't work. When i'm writing,i usually see sentences like this "hi myname is bob, whatis your name".

Am i the only one or does this happen to everyone???

Would this laptop be fast enough for poker? I have an asus u45jc-a1 thats i3-370m processor but it lags a lot b/c i use poker programs called holdem manager 2 and tableninja. I play lot of tables so the lag is really bad when i play lot of tables.

This seems to be one of the few 14 inch laptops thats i7 processor but someone tell me this i7 isn't good b/c its a U series and it isn't much faster than my currenty i3-370m processor. Is this true/false?

the other 14' laptop someone suggest is the sager np2740 one and its a true quad core. Thoughts on this?

Has anyone looked at the HP Envy 14T?

It comes w/the same cpu, the i7-4510U, and the Nvidia M850, w/4 GB of video memory, for the same price range as the Lenovo Y40.

    Hi Folks,

My wife is looking for a new laptop and will be using it primarily to play World of Warcraft, and the rest of the time it will be used for couch surfing, so the light weight / battery life / small form factor is appealing in that sense.

I have been trying to find a review on the Y40 and World of Warcraft performance specifically, but haven't been able to find much and haven't been able to find ANYTHING. Hoping someone can provide me with some feedback. Thanks in advance!!!!!

This laptop has an i7U processor - which only has two cores. So it is not a "traditional" i7 that has four cores. This does come with its advantages though - as it will run cooler and use less battery.

However, the processor in this is still much better than an i3-370M. The Y410p has a quad core i7 - you might want to look into this if you can still find one.

Well I just ordered a Y40 from the Lenovo outlet S&D. I got a steal finding one at 497 pre tax with the i7 (Sometimes when the price is that low, they have an i5). I don't really game on the road very often, but for about 550 OTD, I figured why not have a capable laptop in a pinch. I really ate TN panels and if I end up keeping this laptop for more than a few months, I will probably upgrade the screen to an IPS one very soon. Anyway, Just wanted to post up on here if people are interested to keep an eye out on the Lenovo outlet, some good deals are definitely going to pop up before the year end.

Yeah I got the same deal. I will be interested to see what it looks like when it arrives. I have to imagine it's gaming prowess beats my old Lenovo Z585 and its AMD A10-4660 (though I don't want to knock that machine, it was actually pretty solid!).

I personally would not spend 850 on it. The only real option to get is the i7... after that, its all upgrade-able. SSD prices are very low right now and offer longer warranties than the 1 year lenovo. I think base ram is 8gb which is plenty. With that said, you should be able to find one for about 700 OTD.

The screen really is pretty bad. It is very dull, not bright, and simply MEH. If you plan to plug into a monitor to game... the screen won't matter too much. The screen is perfectly alright for basic stuff like word processing, websurfing, and gaming on the go; but with that said... if this was the only display I was going to use, I would really save my cash and go for the Y50 with IPS or ultra high res.

Ok now on to other things. Has anyone noticed screen flicker? I thought it was the ambient light sensor or auto brightness, but I have both disabled. The screen gets bright then dim then back to bright. Its not super pronounced, but enough where I notice it. I will google it, but I figured I would start here with the Zombie thread that no one looks at, lol.

Well, I have to say I am finally coming around on this laptop. After about 6 months of hating the damn thing, I finally ripped out the hybrid drive and put in a Samsung 840EVO SSD. Then I reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 and only installed a few of the Lenovo drivers.

The thing runs like a dream now. Very very snappy. Processor runs at full speed (not dropped down like in a typical power save move) and it feels much much faster. Really looking forward for using this laptop another 6 months until I get the new computer itch and replace it :)

After some research and I just purchased this from the Lenovo site for $750 OTD after tax
    for the Lenovo Y40 Laptop - 59423030 - Black: Doorbuster $699.00 QSDEAL030

I read the complaints about the panel....I am very handy and replacing it IF I DONT LIKE IT -- no big deal for $75-$100. I can buy now and replace later if I want to.
    I read the complaints on R9 M270...
Is it DDR3 or GDDR5? I can't get a consensus...but either way I am coming from a Dell XPS 12 with integrated graphics. I have a dedicated desktop PC that I game on...but I'd like a mid-grade dedicated card in a laptop that can handle CS:GO and others at a decent play level, so this card is absolutely fine for me.

I am completely sick of this XPS 12's garbage touchpad, constant problematic wireless issues and general slowless for an i5. I never use the touchscreen or the flip feature. The ONLY redeeming feature is the 8hrs battery life. I don't even need this anymore now I graduated university. If I get 3-4hrs out of the Y40 with light browsing that is totally fine with me.

Once I receive the laptop, I am going to immediately wipe it and start with Windows 7. I can't stand Windows 8 personally...

So I have been using the laptop for about 3 days now and I do really enjoy it...

My only gripes are that the space key on the keyboard doesnt fully register if you press it on the far left corner and the screen colors are a little dully...its not the end of the world, but I will probably upgrade the screen for $75 at a later date.

Other than that, its fast and the graphics is a great mid-tier card. Plays most games at 1080p on medium settings for 60fps.

    Can't be happier for $700!

I have been playing CS:GO on this laptop for about 1-2 months now. I'm curious about your experience, because I have found it essential to open up the Catalyst Control Center > Power > Switchable Graphics Application Settings and set CS:GO to High Performance. Otherwise, it appears to default to the onboard graphics.

I played the game at 20-30 FPS for a week or so, trying out different graphics-setting combinations and resolutions. I got to the point where I was playing windowed at 640x480 in windowed mode with everything on low, and I had been getting maybe a 5 FPS difference. At the end of my tinkering, I knew something was up. I went into the Control Center, and I added the game on High Performance. (Please note that some games show up automatically. I had to click Add Application. If you're not familiar with how Steam organizes its folders, just know that you may need to take some time figuring this out.)

Once I set the game to High Performance, I was getting 100-200 FPS regularly. If I'm playing a Deathmatch server on a graphically-intensive map with a full server, I have watched FPS drop to 40-60 FPS area. Just in case you don't know, open up console (default is the tilde key `), and type in "cl_showfps 1" to display it.

One last thing to note is that I suspect the game might actually revert back to onboard video with CS:GO if I don't actually open up the Catalyst Control Center before starting the application. It doesn't do this with Dota 2. That game always runs smooth. I'm not sure what the deal is, and I haven't tested this extensively yet. However, it seems like if I don't open up the Control Center before running CS:GO, there's a chance that it reverts back to onboard video. I'm curious if anyone else has had this issue.

I noticed the new Y40-80 has a backlit keyboard. I would be interested to see if the keyboards are interchangeable between the 70 and 80 and if so if we actually have somewhere to plug in the backlight control. Someone be a guinea pig! :D

I just picked up a Y40-80 for $666 out the door. A few things I noticed: 1) my 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 SO-DIMMs (which came out of my DV7T CTO 5000) will not work, as they are of the 1.5v variety - the Y40-80 uses 1.35v SO-DIMMS. 2) laptop hard drive thickness limitations - I ordered the Y40-80 with the 500GB SSHD... It's a 7mm thickness/height laptop drive. I had a Toshiba 1TB SSHD I wanted swap in place, but it won't fit. The mounting bracket from the 500GB SSHD will fit, but do to the 1TB SSHD drive's being 9.5mm, the mounts don't reach the screw holes. From searching, SSHD's bigger than 500GB are going to be 9.5mm in thickness... Unless you get Western Digital latest mode (WD WD10S12X 1TB/16GB NAND) which is one of the very few that are 7mm and 1TB. <-- I might just keep the 500GB SSHD in there and clear out the stock recovery partitions to reclaim space. I wont be able to restore all my files from my previous drive.

Has anyone put a 9.5mm drive in there and experience the same issue?

The internal GPU uses the system DDR3, the AMD GPU uses it's dedicated GDDR5. If you're getting bad game performance, make sure you go into the AMD Enduro control panel and look at recent applications, and make sure that the games you're playing are set to use the AMD GPU. Their switching software isn't as good at auto-detecting as Nvidia's is.

When i owned the y40 i don't think i ever had it successfully auto switch graphics once. I always had to go into the control panel and set it to use the AMD GPU.

It switches automatically fine if you set the app preference, that when a specific game/app is running it should use the internal GPU. But there are two "sets" of those matches, when you're on battery and when you're plugged in, so it could have been something like a constant power saving setting preventing it from kicking on. I know it works fine with the new Y40-80 if you have things set up right, but it's complex enough that you can get into trouble if you don't pay attention to your power settings.
