Right now I can get a Y40 with 16GB RAM, 4510U i7, and 512GB SSD with a 4GB Radeon R9 M275 for $999.
On the other hand, I really like the aesthetics and extra power of the Y50, but for $1100 I'm not going to get an SSD or 16 gigs of RAM. I like the extra portability of the Y40. All I want to know is--Is it worth it to buy the more powerful Y50 and upgrade the screen/ram/HD later or go with a portable powerhouse like the Y40? Does anyone have experience running games on the Y40--will it run modern games at medium-high settings? Thanks for any help.

A ulv CPU and an m275m will NOT run modern games at high and likely will not even run them at medium. If you want performance that will have any sort of future proofing at all go with the y50

Thanks for the reply. Still on the fence but I'm starting to lean towards the Y50. Maybe I'll wait until later this year--chances are they'll get a little cheaper closer to the release date of the next model...

I was in the same boat until I saw both of them. The Y40 is kind of weak. The video card is a 8870M under a new name and the CPU is kind of gutless. Save your money and get the Y50 and/or look at offerings from other companies as well.
If 750$ is all you can afford and you want to play games you should be buying a desktop computer anyways. Not a laptop. -
The y40 is weaker than it's predecessor, but at least it has decent battery life and "okay" gaming performance for the price.
Upgrading to the baseline Y50 is a recommendation though, and also the Y40 lacks a backlit keyboard.
Y40 vs. Y50?
