So, after some thought, i'm thinking of pulling the trigger, and buying this little jewel off Lenovo Canada:

    Y 15'' Removable Graphics GT750M5 | Lenovo | (CA)

Should come to 250$ with Tax, free shipping.

Best of all, i should be able to return it if it doesn't work. Or i can pawn it off eBay for the price i paid for it.

Now, after getting the M5, i was thinking of buying the Y400 GPU bezel from here:

    90201961 - QIQY5 2ND VGA BEZEL

    And then attaching it.

    Is this a good idea?

Spare parts has no more Y-14" bezels. They had only one last month, until ember(?) bought it.

So, you don't want to wait the result of 650m ultrabay(mix sli) seller from the Ebay?

    1. Ebay is unreliable
    2. I'd like to have native SLI support.

I believe there is something wrong with the y410 model specifically that prevents it from reading any ultrabay cards (or at least 750m cards).

Nope. Not even for a Lenovo gift card. They won't take it back unless i break it or something, and even there they would ship me a new one :p

I could probably get 750$ off it max, considering i have the original packaging, original OS, everything. Kijiji (Canadian Craigslist) is also a popular alternative in my country.

But meh, don't feel like going laptopless for now. Especially with having exams in the next two weeks. Can't go back to my Inspiron 15 either, the fan makes grinding noises and the battery lasts half an hour, tops.

Ah screw it. I'll keep it a few years and upgrade it when i will need to. The reason i bought it in the first place was because 6 months ago i was low on cash and this was a great deal for the price i paid (800$). Now i have more money, true, but frankly it's not like i need the extra performance, and i can just put that money into a future purchase of a nice future laptop.

Hey Jobine and all the other y410p owners!
It looks like we Lenovo has finally made an ultrabay 750m for the y410p!
A few weeks ago I was looking through their website and came across a gt750m5p card. I found it odd since they had already released the 750m for the 510p, so I went to read the description. The description said that it was for the 410p and the dimensions were a few millimeters smaller than the ultrabay for the 510p. It had the same price, $230 (US) and I was going to buy it, but a few days later it was gone. Since then I couldn't find any trace of it. Fast forward to today: I was checking out their site and seeing nothing, and then decided to google it. After googling "gt750m4p" I came across this: Y410p Removable Graphics GT750M4P | 888016118 | Lenovo | (VN)
It looks like this is available from resellers/business partners, or maybe you could order it over phone, but whatever the case, Lenovo has given it a product number, a model number, and a website, so it should soon be available for sale. And if you click the graphics cards subcategory ( Graphics Cards | Lenovo | (VN)) there will also be a gt755m card for the y510p.

    Best regards,
    Daniel

Yeah, it doesnt look like its for sale, but at least we know that it exists. If it makes it to the US is a whole other issue. Before this, the best evidence I had seen of the existence of this card was an old listing on Taobao. Also found the same card on Lenovo's US outlet. It has no price and is a dead link, but they have the model and part number, now on a US website. http://outlet.lenovo.com/SEUILibrar...1C5BB51B21465D96C353CC4CEF4801&&page-size=500

In case they remove it I'm attaching a screenshot of the site: 750m4p on outlet.png

I was able to get info/specs about it by comparing it to the y510p card. Still no price and a dead link, but it gave me the specs, including dimensions: 750m4p on outlet.png

    The y510p specs are:

I thought you guys might appreciate this; I have a Y410p with a GT755M and I just got it working in SLI using the GT755M Y510p ultrabay card here: Y510P Removable Graphics GT755M5 | Lenovo | (US)

Best part - the GT755M version is on sale for only $99!

The only reason why the physical dimensions were off is because of the bezel. I dremeled the bezel down to get it to fit, and ordered the module frame from Lenovo parts on the phone for the Y400 (Part# 90201962) that allows it to lock into the ultrabay port. This part cost me $35, and it's mechanically compatible with the Y410p.

The card itself is working fine, just dont want it to get pulled out while the laptop is powered on.

As far as I can tell I'm the only one to report in with details of a working Y410p SLI setup, so sharing information to help others. For $99 it's really a no-brainer as long as you're okay with putting in some work on the bezel. You could also purchase a bezel separately like from this ebay listing: 2nd HDD SSD Hard Drive Caddy for Lenovo IdeaPad Y400N Y410N Y410P with Bezel | eBay

Hope this helps others out there! Let me know if there are any pictures or steps that I can share.

Man, you just made my day. I'm returning my y410p (755m) since it arrived defective (screen broken), and the seller offered me to get an y510p (755m) instead of it for only 50 € more. I'm very tempted to accept because SLI should work for sure on y510p, but if you made it with your 14" I think I'll stick with my original choise (portability is a big + for me). So, before I say anything definitive to the seller, I'd like to ask you a few question:
    1) Have you tested it with some high end games? If yes, is it performing well?
    2) Do you have any overheating issues?
    3) It may be a stupid question, but you're using a 170V adapter, right?
    4) Any issues with softwares/Bios etc.?
    5) May I ask you to post some photos of the modified ultrabay?
    6) If you can, I believe it might be useful if you specify which model do you have (model number, specs and eventual modifications you made previously)
Thanks in advantage, and I think that I wouldn't be wrong if I say that if you'll ever post a detailed guide of the procedure you followed, would be very much appreciated by a lot of us.
P.s. I apologize for grammar mistakes, I'm from Italy ;)

    Hey,

Happy to post more details over the weekend! For now, here's what I have:

    1) Have you tested it with some high end games? If yes, is it performing well? - I haven't yet. I have my games on my HDD in a ultrabay caddy so I need to reinstall on my SSD to test :p. Do you have any specific games that you'd like me to test? I don't have all the latest ones but I have quite a few from 2013.

    2) Do you have any overheating issues? - Yeah, it gets hot, and delta max has been +50C (24C to 74C under 3DMark load). Not terrible but hot air does vent out both sides with the SLI card.

    3) It may be a stupid question, but you're using a 170V adapter, right? - You mean 170W? Yes :)

    4) Any issues with softwares/Bios etc.? - Thankfully no. I know people had issues with Windows 8.1 and SLI. I hadn't updated to 8.1 yet, and the card was automatically detected in 8. I then updated the drivers and installed 8.1. SLI continued to work like a breeze.

    5) May I ask you to post some photos of the modified ultrabay? - Yes. Excuse my horrible dremeling skills. WIll post in the next couple of days.

    6) If you can, I believe it might be useful if you specify which model do you have (model number, specs and eventual modifications you made previously) - Sure. It's a Y410p (Model #59392484) running the i7-4770MQ. No software/BIOS mods were used, and the only "hardware" mods was what I described in my original post.

    1) Well, I'd suggest to use the most graphical demanding game you have at your disposal. I was thinking mostly to games like bioshock infinite, farcry 3 and Wildstar (not really demanding and you'll have to be in possess of one beta-key, but I'm gonna play it ALOT so if you have the chance please test it xD).
    3) yeah I meant 170W :)
    5) perfect, thanks.

I have Infinite and I just got a beta for Wildstar; I dont have FC3 original but I do have Blood Dragon. Will post single and SLI performance results. Do you want a 900p or 1080p comparison?

as you wish, but since the y410p screen is HD+ maybe 900p is better for the laptop.

I offered because I wasn't sure, but 900p makes my life easier :)

I only had a chance to run Bioshock Infinite Benchmarks. FC3 doesn't have an inbuilt benchmark engine, and I havent had the time to try Wildstar yet but I think BI should be pretty representative.

Here are the results, in all their glory (Also, I have the i7-4700MQ. I thought I had the i5, so that's incorrect on the chart below): (and PM me if you want the raw CSV data)

I am just curious to know what version BIOS version @pdinc has if he or she could tell us? I wonder if Lenovo fixed this silently and didn't release a BIOS update.

Not if you OC the 650M which is extremely easy to do. Plus Y400 is only 768p not 900p.

And yes the lack of storage expansion options hurts. There are still no good M.2 42mm SSD's on the market while mSATA already has relatively cheap 1TB.

I know you played with this a bit. Is it possible to dump a Y510P 750m bios on one of these $99 755m cards? If I can SLI my Y410p for $99 and a cut off wheel, I'm gonna!

Yeah, you could write the 750M VBIOS onto the 755M's VBIOS SPI flash chip easily using a hardware flasher (I used a Bus Pirate + a program I wrote to dump and flash the VBIOS when I had a card to play with). But I don't know if they have hardware straps as well to configure the device ID like they do on desktop cards.

If a picture of the 755M's PCB could be posted, you could compare it with my photos of the 750M PCB to see if there are any obvious changes in component placement to see if there are any hardware straps.

It's probably the unlocked BIOS from Techinferno.

That's true, but not all 650Ms are capable of overclocking to 755M levels. Also I meant better performance at the same settings, as you can easily play games at lower than native resolution.

Maybe we can arrange that... Hey pdinc, can you post photos of the PCB of your sli 755m add-on card please?

Actually no. I have the GT755M Y410p so this worked out of the box. I didn't need to muck around with the BIOS.

Sure, but it'll be next week.

Jobine, Ember - can you link me or tell me how to get the vBIOS info (assuming you want the vBIOS and not the actual BIOS version)

hey, if you're willing to do that for Italy instead of Canada I'm willing to pay that (plus 50 $ for the commission) xD here I should spend almost 300 euro (400 usd) for that gpu.
Unless i find some good soul willing to do that, I'll have to try taobao for a gt755m4.

Yes, I want the version of the BIOS. You can find it using CPU-Z in the "Mainboard" tab.

Unless you got a really leaky chip most 650M's should be able to match the 755M's 1100 MHz core at stock or with a little voltage bump. I've got mine at 1120 MHz on stock Vcore which is a lot lower than 755M voltage which is why my card runs so cool. Based on the numerous reports of overheating Ultrabays, the 755M can't even seem to be able to handle running at stock.

VRAM is a different story though as 755M uses higher frequency/voltage memory which allows it to OC much higher, but based on personal experience the additional memory bandwidth makes very little difference on performance in SLI with this machine.

Ok, I think there is a leaked v2.07 update package at TechInferno. I don't have a y410p anymore so if you guys with one would upgrade to that (if you are on v1.x of the BIOS) and try with the ultrabay GPU card, then I guess they silently resolved the issue.

@pdinc I have an ultrabay cover for the GPU for the y410p you can have for free if you want it. PM me.
