Well, try taking out the ultrabay completely and putting it back in. Also make sure you are not using blu ray discs.

I don't use medium backlighting. But i think i still hear the noise. It is probably caused by some magnetic field.

Saw a couple of post about the i7 and 410p, and just wanted to point out that the turbo boost technology is limited in the Y510p, most noteably when using more than one core or when using the graphic card intensively.

Review Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews (look under the section "Turbo Boost")

I don't know if the 410p has the same issue (it seems like there is turbo boos on all 4 cores???), or if it is only an issue when the laptop has SLI. But is guess there is a chance/risk that Turbo Boost does not work problerly on the 410p...

EDIT: Oh and great review btw :) I just bought the Y500 last week because I was able to find a used one at a good price...

Erm yes. Unless you plug in the SLI expansion, then in that case the iGP disables itself.

Hello thanks for the informative review.

I checked the Lenovo website for the Y410p and it has the model with the HD 1600x900 model with the GT755m video card. Do you recommend that model since it is on sale and only going for $820.

the cheapest model is $750. Do you think the slightly better video card and a higher resolution display is worth the $70?

The screen alone is well worth the 70$ upgrade. As for the GPU, 755 and 750 are identical except for different clocks, which can be adjusted manually with MSI afterburner or another similar tool.

    Alright thank you!

By the way, is the estimate ship time usually reliable? I heard people that ordered the ideapad won't have their product shipped till 2014!

Since the 755m GT is a slightly overclock version would it produce more heat than the 750m GT?

    1. Shipping is 4 days to 4 weeks, and it also depends where you live. I live in Charlottetown (Canada). which is pretty isolated, and it took 18 days to ship. If you get a shipping error (like you described), call Lenovo, and most of the time they will just fix it + give you a freebie (like a free mouse) to compensate.

    2. Not really, Kepler cards overclock well and don't produce any significant additional heat. I can pump up my 750M to near max and only get a few degrees of extra heat, nothing i can notice.

Alright thanks. I only have a couple more questions. I hope I don't cause you any more annoyance.

    1. So I am planning to bring this laptop to college sometimes to do school work and game.. With an i7 processor I think I would be able to do school work just fine. However, how portable is this laptop? I notice this laptop is just a bit smaller than many 15.6 inch laptop in the market. It seems really thick.
I am a noob at computers so how come this laptop seemed so thick compared to other laptop computers.

    2. Do you think I should wait till Q1 of 2014 before ordering a Y410P. I heard that is going to be some significant refreshes from one of your posts. I really like a computer of this caliber for $829. I don't know if next years, they will have prices this low for such good specs. I check alienware and other brands and it seems the Y410P has the most bang for its buck. (correct me if I am wrong)

    3. Do you think this computer can last me for more than 3-4 years in terms of survivability? Like the hinges and stuff.

    Thanks again man!

    1. Well, this laptop is 1.25 inches thick. Thick for a 14 incher, thin for something with Dual GPU's and an i7. For size, it is located somewhere between a small 14 incher and a mid sized 15 incher. If you have ever seen a Dell 14R, this laptop has a similar size. At 5 pounds [5.5 with SLI], it is definately not the most lightweight laptop out there. However, it only weighs .5 lbs (1 pound more with SLI) more than a 13 inch Macbook Pro, which is the most common laptop on my campus. SLI or no SLI, it weighs less than a 15 inch macbook Pro, which is also very common.

    2. Well, honestly, i know that Q1 will bring Broadwell + Maxwell, so a possible Lenovo Y420 (insert marijuana reference here) might come out, so that might be worth waiting for. The thing is, the Y420/Y520 *might* come with higher-than-FHD displays, which would be a big plus imho. The successor of the Y410p is almost confirmed to come with 1080p, because Lenovo is already putting 1080p displays in their T440s and u430p's, which are laptops with the same screen sizes. Whether you can settle with 900p or wait a little longer is up to you.

As for bang-for-buck, there is no known laptop (in a new condition) with better BFB than this. Anything i could find in this price range either had a weaker CPU, GPU, or 1366x768 screen. The closest thing is the Acer V7-482PG, which packs a weaker GPU (DDR3 750M), CPU (i5 ULV) but has a superior display (FHD touch).

Alienware has terrible bang for buck. But they have good resale value, which might make up for that. But i don't suggest bringing an Alienware 14 to college, way too flashy + 6.4 pounds in a 14 inch laptop! Also, turn that backlit keyboard OFF during class, this is speaking from experience!

    3. I honestly don't know. Mine hasn't given up on me yet, and i've owned it for 4 months. Depends how wel you take care of it, like all laptops. When recieving your laptop, always check both the outside and inside for defects or weaknesses, and return it if you find some. Also, if you want something a bit more rugged (albeit with a weaker CPU/GPU and no SLI), you could look at the T440p. GT730M and i5-4200M.

Bottom line, if you take care of your laptops, they can last. My old budget dell Inspiron (aka one of the worse laptops in terms of build quality in the world) that i bought in 2008 has lasted me 5 years without any breakdowns (only breakdown was a hard drive failure, but was caused by myself for slamming it on the ground lol).

This is how thick the laptop is (compare this picture to a USB port). Thin lid, thick base:

    lenovo-laptop-ideapad-y410p-side-15.jpg

Note that this is the SLI version, the one you are ordering comes with a DVD burner and will only have one copper grille.

I don't know why some gaming laptop is so thick and bulky though.

Gaming laptops use higher-end components than regular laptops. For example, your average 14 inch laptop you will find on the market will usually have an ultra-low-voltage processor and integrated graphics. The Lenovo Y410p houses a full-size quad-core processor and two graphics cards, which is actually usually found in big and bulky 15-17 laptops, such as the MSI GT70.

The Lenovo Y400 and Y410p are actually world's smallest laptops to hold dual GPUs, and are still smaller than the Alienware 14. This laptop is small for the performance it packs.

There are smaller laptops than the Y410p that house similar components, such as the Clevo W230ST and MSI GE40, but they are more expensive. The latter also runs far hotter than the Y410p and neither have optical drive bays.

If you still think this laptop is thick, the Lenovo T430 (which is very common in business) has the same thickness and weight.

I need to buy another 755m gt to dual sli graphics cards right?

Also for the ultrabay port. Can I put in another fan instead?

Yes. However i've only seen them in malaysia, so you will have to import them. Unless of course, you want to use a 650M and a modded driver.

Yep. Call Lenovo and ask to see if they still have the Ultrabay fan for the Y400 in stock.

Have you had strange dips in performance? I've been playing Mafia 2 and Warframe lately, and I notice sometimes the fps is much lower then usual and isn't sily smooth like normal. A restart usually works, but any clue what might be causing it?

Hi , been experimenting with a few games recently and wondering if these temps are reasonable. Ambient temp aroud 30c

    L4D 2 Highest Setting

    1330x768 78c-81c
    1920x1080 85-88c

    BF3 All Medium

    1330x768 81c-85c
    1920x1080 92c-94c

    BF3 All Low

    1330x768 77c-80c
    1920x1080 90c-92c

    BF3 Ultra

    1330x768 90-94c

Does these temps consider normal for this unit ? Seams like playing 1080p put tremendous load on the GPU ...guess will be playing at lower resolution when hook up with a monitor. anything above 90c will start to flicker black inn black out repeatedly....guess it's telling me it's overheating

Uhm, you are playing on an external monitor? Because this laptop does come with a 1080p display.

    You running any overclocks?

Also, it has been reported that some laptops are not as well pasted as others. Pasting your own laptop voids your warranty, sadly, and this is the case for every manufacturer out there.

Yes, though HDMI , I got the 1388x786 model....
    Testing with MSI combuster
I didn't run overclock, underclocking with 915/1998 still with a slightly lower temp of 89c...

If default it will reach up to 96c during stress test.

Playing 1080p with all low settings in BF3 will also yeild similar temp ( tbh , almost any newer games )

Tried with cooler pad also this High =(

Will see if my country Lenovo offers repasting service.....after 1 month ( Need use everyday till coll holidays =( )

I guess you guys temp are much cooler then mine right ?

Mind sharing with me so I can make a comparison , preferable with Furmark or Kombuster

    just a quick post,

i connected my y410p to an external display through hdmi, weird thing was the sound still came out from the laptop not the TV.
so i did some googling, tried different solutions and the one that works it to download the new Intel HD 4600 driver.
After installing it, there was an additional option in the control panel-sound. I can now choose the TV (there wasn't any option before).

Another thing is i coated my laptop with stickers to protect it. (Glossy sticker for the top and bottom part, matte sticker for the keyboard and touchpad area)
I will post the pic later, all i can say is it does improve the looks and for those complaining about the touchpad, i cover mine with sticker and it improved a lot! easier to navigate now.

Remember the sound when shutdown i expericed....it seams to go away 0.0....guess travelling with it for 2 weeks might had triggered something.

Btw, i tried my friends Y510p...also reporting the same temperature around 95c when BF3 and kombuster...

the nvidia site mentions the turbo 2.0 for 750 and not on 755, how much would it get cocked to? nearby the 755?

    what risk?

If you overclock your 750 to match a 755, there are no risks. Also, all 7xx GPUs have Turbo 2.0.

The risk comes when you push you GPU to the max in MSI afterburner like myself

I would like to know if the info that the NGFF/M2 slot is REMOVED for models not bought with THE 24 GB SDD has been verified ?

is there any way to find out if ssd slot is present without opening the laptop ? (via software ). Thanks !

Most people who have bought the newer laptops (GT755M) have reported that the laptop has the port even if you don't have the SSD.

However i cannot guarantee anything, as i am in no way affiliated with Lenovo (unlike what most people think).

I am looking at this laptop, versus a 14" Dell 7437 that just came out. Lower price and more features. My main concern is the screen and heat. Screen seems good...this laptop has huge vents at the bottom so is it okay to have on my lap or was it designed to be more gamer/desk? The review says "this laptop gets hot". During normal use as well or only while gaming?

I have a workstation desktop with 27" ips monitor which I find hard to write code on so I am looking at these machines. My usage forecast for this machine: browsing, network stream videos, java coding, photoshop(rarely), no gaming.

Anyone from Toronto order this? I see some canadians here :)

This laptop stays fairly cool during normal use.

I would recommend the Dell if you don't need the extra performance (Quad-Core, more RAM, 2x the storage, GT750M[sli]) though. You will really benefit from the FHD touchscreen, and the added battery life. The Inspiron is also lighter.

As you may or may not know, this review is quite a few months old, and i ordered my Y410p 5 days after Haswell got launched, since it was one of the first few Haswells on the market.

I live in Charlottetown. IMO one of the best cities in Canada but shipping here is oh-so slow. I can't speak for Toronto.

After seeing the low price of the Yoga 2 Pro, i could assume the successor to the Y510p and Y410p will have QHD displays. But until then, you will have to choose between screen+battery life vs. performance.

Thank you for the feedback Jobine. Yes I am aware this review is few months old, I read through all the threads, including the Dell's. The Dell Haswell i5 and i7 are U versions which score much lower than the QM's in Lenovo. I am torn between the y410p and the Dell...I'm finding it hard to digest the HUGE gap in specs and performance. I really doubt I'll be pushing the system, nor travel much but 14" fits my bag. If I can operate it on my lap and temperatures are normal like other laptops then the y410p might work. Its $880 for 1tb+ssd version now. $899 for Dell i5 4200u, 6gb everything soldered including battery. They both have glossy screens, lets say similar viewing angles. Is touch screen 1080p really that important? Maybe that's upto the user but dang I get so much less lol

I checked the yoga 2 $999 for i3, gotta pass on that. I'm not that cool yet. I live in Greater Toronto Area so shipping is fast, however I also cannot speak for the rest of Toronto lol

By the way..is it possible to remove the optical drive and just put a cover on it? That should make it lighter...I don't really need an optical drive.

Well, i've actually had a pretty good experience with Inspirons to be honest. My 1525 lasted me 5 years of service through my highschool days. However it had 2 fan failures, a faulty hinge and a hard drive failure (though it was a Samsung brand hard drive).

For touch 1080p, i find touch to be insanely gimmicky on non-convertibles. 1080p however is very welcomed, because it will give you not only more screenspace, but usually it comes with better colors, resulting in a more vibrant display. I personally think 1080p is way too packed in for 14'', but many people disagree with me. Reason why is because i work mostly with large monitors.

Finally, the 14 has 2x the battery life of the Y410p. This could be something that might be worth taking into consideration.

The ODD is actually the lighter component of the Y410p. If you add in the SLI bay, it adds in a pound of weight :p

Found this image. My room has similar light conditions and the y410p looks pretty darn good!

I'm a 3D Artist/Android Dev so all these screen and pixel stuff isnt new to me. I have an 13" old macbook A1181 with dead battery that I use and it weighs 5.2 lbs...and yours measured..4.8? Battery life aint important...I won't add SLI bay, was hoping there's some sort of cover/lid.

There's a video on youtube of a y410p with radioactive style stickers throughout. I mean everything, including trackpad! It's very cool. Everyone seems to complain about the glossy bezel I'll get a black sticker and put on the bezel and make it matte! haha

Take some pics where its around normal sized objects. The pics online are closeups and make it look super thick like alienwares but I know its not.

The laptop with my headphones as a reference. Note the glare is caused by the camera flash, and sorry for the bad quality.

1.25 inches at it's thickest point with the lid closed if you are wondering.

Thanks! That front view is good, it shows the screen gloss is just like my old macbook. I am leaning towards this machine, it can definitely take the load...I just worry about the heat.

Need a screenshot of the screen/keyboard turned on?

Also, the Y510p could be worth giving a check. It is a pound heavier, but has a larger battery, 1080p display and better SLI support.

You can get the SLI model for only 1049$ here at Canada Computers (they have a stock of 2 in Toronto Kennedy, should be a small drive away!)

That won't be necessary thank you. Thickness wise its just like my old macbook, 2006 model so its 1.2-ish thick at 13.3". I like a lot of things about this laptop, performance wise its on par with my desktop which I have yet to experience. Like I said, I worry about the heat. Might just buy it to see how it goes. Right now Dell is messing with the prices, the 15" and 17" have had promos but nothing on the 14". Lame!

I would still recommend the Y510p over the Y410p if you have the cash. On top of that you won't have to deal with Lenovo's hit-or-miss shipping.

I did consider the y510p...drawbacks being it wont fit in my bag and also its heavier. I was aiming for similar weight or lighter with a good screen under 14"..actually I was aiming much lower, I tried out some Asus in the store and the keyboard+build quality was terrible. Early reviews of the dell say the keyboard is mushy and unevenly backlit.

What do you mean by hit-or-miss shipping?

You must be new to Lenovo...

4 days to 4 weeks depending on when the Chinese boat makes it's delivery. Had to wait nearly 3 weeks for mine.

The Y510p i linked to can be purchased with a quick drive to the store. Not to mention it packs the second graphic card as an added bonus.

I know their shipping is slow, didn't know boats are involved lol. I saw your 4 days to 4 weeks comment earlier as well...it's like the universe wants me to get the Dell but I want the lenovo. What the hell is going on lol. I don't see anyone from toronto who bought this so I cant really get an exact estimate.

My desktop is a Dell inspiron from last year, I have experience with Dell so I know the product will get here as soon as possible. Dammit!

Looks like I gotta do a coin flip on this. On the plus side, I figured out your 420p dilemma. Lenovo 420p in Chronic Green!

If they can slim it down, it will easily best Alienware and that over priced Razer Blade. I remember the good ol' days when only Alienware was overpriced
