Sorry if this is a noob question but I just bought this laptop and installed games on it like counter strike source and its laggy. There is so much lag and I think its using integrated graphics because counter strike source should be able to run smoothy on this computer. How do I check to see whether this laptop is running on integrated graphics or 750m when I'm gaming?
I heard some where that this laptop switches graphics to save energy. Is this true? Is there an off and on switch for the 750m?

IIRC, there's no Optimus for the Ideapad Y410p.

Yes there is. Nvidia control panel --) 3D settings --) Preferred Graphics processor.
You can pick Nvidia only, intel only or Auto-Select, which is optimus.
Note that SLI models dont have Optimus, however. -

The nvidia gpu underclocks itself when on battery. Run games plugged in. The integrated gpu is actually faster than the nvidia gpu when on battery.

Correct me if i'm wrong but, isnt Counter-Strike a low end game? Pretty sure the 4600HD can handle CS, maybe something else is wrong?

ok i had a test today with the game Neverwinter ( is free go get it ). So what happened which seemed strange with this game is that even though i chose it from nvidia control panel to open with the 750m card, and it did ( i saw from the icon of nvidia that the game had opened with 750m card ) the game was OK with full details etc, but a bit low fps, it didnt felt good and no it wasnt the hd4600 card cause i opened it with this one and the game was unplayable in full details.
So what i did is, from nvidia menu i chose the NVIDIA GPU to be the main card ( optimus off ) and restarted game, the game was rock solid, strange i know but it happened and i tested it 2-3 times with the same results. ( all the times the laptop was on the charger ) -
Seems like they still have to work out some kinks with Optimus; other users reported black flickering a while back while it was on in games that should have been straight Nvidia. I've just set everything to run on integrated, and have been making individual game exceptions for the dedicated card in the Nvidia control panel; it's a pita, but everything seem to be running well.

Update your drivers. I gained up to 10% better FPS in some games and 100 more PCmark score by going from the stock drivers to the latest, also update *both* GPU's.
-
i m on the latest drivers. anyway i just made chrome and some basic apps to run with integrated and the global setting set to nvidia and i m good to go. i dont care about battery anyway i m 90% on charger on this laptop.

If you are letting your laptop plugged in all the time, drain the battery down to 60%, because keeping a high charge at all times will actually damage the battery in the long run, also use the optimized battery health in the Lenovo Power Management.
-
yes ive done that and it is always arround 55-60% - not charging and on optimized for battery health

Hey dlevel I have a few questions about your Y410p setup. I'll pm you.
-
Thanks for the tip! I saw that setting but wasn't sure what it did. I'll definitely be enabling it.
-
You are talking about Source. Global Offensive is very cpu intensive and it needs a decent gpu to get smooth frame rates especially since this is a first person shooter -
Ah okay, i was being mistaken because i have an old dinosaur PC from 1999 that can play (original) CS
Y410p how to enable geforce 750m when gaming?
