Have to agree about the display and lack of contrast. For games and browsing, it is not so bad, but watching movies on it is a pain. You have to look in a perfect angle to get decent contrast, else parts of the display are grayed out.
The display on my work provided T400 is a lot better for angles.
I just got my Y470 and besides games, DVD and Blu ray are also key. I am surprised nobody has mentioned how bad the angles really are for movie watching.
Shame, since the resolution and color is fine for me and the speakers are great.
Need to decide if going back. Glad I did not order the mSata yet, in case it goes back.
Update: Still not sure. Everything but movie viewing is great.

Perhaps a somewhat easier question to answer: does anyone have a recommendation for same-resolution (1366x768) screen that is of a high quality? No very significant quality lapses when viewed from another angle, no graininess, etc.

Would it be possible to purchase an IPS screen to replace the stock LED Panel?

Check this out before trying to buy an upgrade. Unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way. Before purchasing a screen upgrade, check to see the type of mounting the screen requires. Screen country is a reliable site and they have good tech support and ship fast (I may have to get in touch with them for a bit of help find suitable screen), but try and figure a bit out before placing an order.
Some screens need screw holes on the top (my Lenovo y460 did) and some displays may be too large and not come with the proper screw holes and mechanics for it to fit. I'm not sure if the Lenovo y470 is similar (from what I have read the y470 requires a 30 pin connector and the 460 requires a 40 pin connector), but please be aware of what I mention in the other thread.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
I haven't taken apart my 470 yet, but let me get this straight - the motherboard has 40 pins, which then split off into 30 for the screen and 10 for the webcam/mic? Why do we have to lose webcam/mic functionality if we're still only using 30 pins to drive the screen?
-
I haven't lost webcam functionality on my Lenovo y460, but then again, I do not fully understand what differences there maybe within the y470. I have found a slim 30pin 1600 x 900 display on screen country, but another user said the current screen is 40pins, which is a bit confusing. If you open up your Lenovo y470 and take a look at the connections and they are similar to the y460 in the video, it may be worth trying the model I have used, if in fact the current model within the y470 is 40pins.
Again, keep in mind that there is no guarantee that this will work. The 30 pin + 10 pin for webcam could have some merit too it, but it seems that this is an assumption made based up what is vaguely mentioned within the hardware maintenance manual. So, there really isn't anything concrete.
Here is the hardware maintenance manual that others are referring to if you are interested:
Lenovo y470 Hardware Maintenance Manual
If you go to page 85 it list the LCD models and says "PIQY0 LVDS CABLE 30PIN," which maybe the source of the confusion.
Also, here is the y460 hardware maintenance manual:
Lenovo y460 Hardware Maintenance Manual
On page 83 you will see the models listed for the LCD models for the y460, but there is no mention of the LVDS cable. If it said the same thing I think we could shed a sigh of relief, but I don't see anything listed pertaining to the pin count for the y460, so I can't make a comparison. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure is for someone to try to install a higher resolution 1600 x 900 display. Again, a good first step would be to open up the Lenovo y470, compare the connections to the Lenovo y460 video I have made and observe any differences, and check out the model number (as well as verify the pin count). After that you may consider trying a display.
Edit:
For those who don't know, in order to take the bezel off and get a view of the connections, there are two screws instead of six for the y460. The two screws are located on each end of the bottom of the bezel underneath the indentation for the pegs. Then you have to unscrew several screws to take the screen out. This process is shown on pages 67 through 71 of the hardware maintenance document, which I have posted above. -
By the way guys, for the y470p i've checked with the peeps over at screencountry and it seems like the panel "B140RW01 V.2" would fit right providing the cable works right.
But sadly that's only a 1600x900 panel while i'm looking for a 1920x1080 one preferably. Anyone got any clues bout this? -
I wonder why some models are 30-pin and others 40-pin for the same panel? -
Again, check this thread out and watch the video before jumping on a display.
Read and watch the video (You can ignore the 30pin req. for the y470 since that is uncertain)
So, while the V.2 looks much better (has better contrast, viewing angles, etc) than the V.0 I went with, it simply won't fit (it powers on but the mounting is different and you cannot put the bezel back on because it is too wide and thick). Most of the slim 14" 1600 x 900 screens are of about the same quality as the y460 or y470 displays but with a higher resolution. So, the main reason to do this is if you need a higher resolution screen (not necessarily one with better viewing angles which would be nice).
You can try the LTN140KT05 or the B140RW02 V.0 that I have went with. I looked up the LTN140KT05 and it has a slightly higher contrast than the V.0 that I am using. Note both have 40 pins and are not guaranteed to work, so it is up to you if you want to try it.

Also, IMO, 1600x900 just the right resolution screen for 14". 1920x1080 would make everything really small, even with DPI increases you would still have to constantly zoom in on websites. And, I don't believe there are any 1920x1080 14" slim LED laptop displays available anywhere (I went through screen country's entire catalog and did a general search on google). There are certainly 15" models, but 14" is practically nonexistent at that resolution. -
I have y470 with B140XW03 V0 screen, may be I have the bad one, but it has pixel lattice which looks like bed sheet with backlight. Previously i had an y550 model, and its screen(B156XW02 V0) completely satisfied me. Is it possible to find matrix at same level of quality as B156XW02 V0 but for y470? Resolution is not important, I not want FullHD screen or something like that, I need just normal image without pixelization.

Have anyone tried replacing their Y470p screen yet?
-
Yes, I know I just created this profile and I am bumping this thread but I figured there was enough interest in this upgrade that I decided to post. I ordered a screen about five minutes ago, should be here before the end of next week. If I successfully transplant and get the screen functional I will let you all know. I figured my best bet would be to use the screen of a similarly sized lenovo (the Thinkpad T420) with a 1600x900 resolution display. Here is hoping I will be playing Diablo 3 at much higher resolution by next saturday!

I'm beginning to believe that the set of 14" 1600x900 displays compatible with the Y470 is a recursively enumerable language. When the answer is yes for a given display, you will get a response indicating such. When the answer is no, you will be waiting forever for a response and will never get one.

^Well, I recently opened up my Lenovo y470 and it was almost exactly the same as the y460 (white cable for camera at top and gold connector), so there is a higher chance that a 40pin display (such as the one that worked with my y460) could work.
I actually went to purchase a matte display today (my brother wants matte and I am also curious to see the difference between the glossy display on my y460 and the matte display I've decided to purchase), but all of the 14" matte finish 1600 x 900 models I have selected are out of stock. So, I have to wait until they come back in stock in order to proceed with testing if it would work or not. I've said I would do a video over the summer pertaining to the y470 and I am still planning on it. I have already recorded myself opening the y470 up and removing the display. I just need to order one now.
Again, here are the models that I have selected that have the highest probability of working. I am going to purchase the LTN140KT05 (which is actually manufactured by Samsung) as soon as it comes back in stock.
As I have said in my previous post:
Lenovo Y460 Screen Upgrade (1600 x 900) - YouTube
- And again, I can tell you now that the cables/connectors are the same on the y470, so the chance of a 40pin display working is higher than I originally speculated.
EDIT:
I ordered the LTN140KT05 off of screen country. I'll let you know if it works. And, if it does work, I'll post a video similar to the one that I did with the y460. I should be able to let you know by this Friday or Saturday (if it gets here on schedule).
EDIT2: Ouch... Apparently when I ordered the screen, 5 other people ordered it at the same time (only 2 screens were in stock). So, there was a glitch and it went through. They contacted me today and they refunded me the amount. They will also notify me when the display comes back in stock. It could take up to 2-3 weeks. Just when you think you're making progress...Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
Interesting info, do you think either will work with a Y470P?
-
It's possible. I don't own a y470p, but if I find out that one of the displays works with the y470 then there is a very good chance that it will also work with the y470p. When I make the video you can check the connections are the same. If they are then it will most likely work as well. I believe the main difference between the y470 and y470p is the GPU, so it should be very similar the y470.
-
This is from the Y470's maintenance manual showing it uses a 30pin connector, "PIQY0 LVDS CABLE 30PIN 31049930". The Y470p should be exactly the same as Y470 except GPU and the absence of the Optimus switch. I assume you are only waiting because you want the 1600x900 matte screen which is OOS everywhere?
-
-
They finally got the matte variant of the display back in stock. Hopefully this time it goes through and I get it next week so I can make a video for you guys.
-
I hope you get this because they only receive 2 pieces of them...
Impatient to know if the matte screen fits well ! Coming from Thinkpad i'm definitely not comfortable with the glossy screens. -
Yep, I'm waiting too =D
-
After waiting and waiting for the matte finish to come in stock, I went ahead and purchased the glossy display. It turns out that they really never had the matte finish in stock to begin with and I would have been in an infinite loop waiting for it to come back in stock. I should have a video of the glossy version if everything goes to plan. So, I will have a definitive answer to whether the display works shortly.
I must note that screen country did give me free shipping for my inconvenience (since I got screwed waiting on the matte version). So, a word of advice, if you order the matte version of the screen make sure you call them up and make sure that the order went through otherwise it could be in limbo for a week. Then, after a week, they finally notify you that it didn't go through, which will waste a lot of time. -
I suspected this situation over the stock... maybe i'll try to find an other one or the same somewhere esle. Anyways, thanks for keeping us up to date !
-
Bad news. The screen doesn't work properly. I'm going to try return it. It fit perfectly, and I did get video output, but the screen was washed out (yellow) and was pixelated. So, it seems that the laptop does in fact take a 30pin display and may not be compatible with a 40 pin display. If anyone want to try another 40 pin display or has a 30 pin display in mind and take the lead it is more than welcome, just be sure it has similar encasing (mounting on top and bottom).

Hello everyone,
I just want to know if someone find a screen (at least a 1600x900) who work properly with the Y470? I really don't like the build in one. I'm an engineer student and i really want to change this bad screen resolution because is very uncomfortable for working, the other parts of the laptop are perfect!
I made a lot of research on the internet but i don't find anythingBut i'm sure that might be possible.
So if someone found one screen or have any suggestions i'm very interesting... -
I wouldn't mind finding out if anyone has found a descent upgrade, my y470p has developed a pressure spot or bright spot on the screen, not terrible, just annoys me. I wouldnt even mind a higher quality screen of the same resolution worst case scenerio (i know there are some better looking lcds of the same res, the wifes acer has the same res but way better looking)

Any news about a screen upgrade?
Someone mentioned that an AUO B140.. panel which they purchased would not fit. I would imagine that the AUO B140RTN03.0 is the same story?
Maybe I didn't read through the thread correctly, but has no one tried a plain 30pin to 30pin connector (instead of the OEM Y cable), connected to a 1600x900?
