I'm in the market for a mobile system that can handle some gaming. I mostly play MMOs (SWTOR and GW2 currently). I know the card in these can handle what I want. My question is about heat and build quality.

The Y580 seem like they have some heat issues, do the Y480s as well?

Also, I haven't found a good review of the Y400 regarding build quality. The y480 review on this site mentions that the keyboard frame has some problems. Does the Y400 as well? Otherwise, how is the build quality on the Y400?

    Thanks.

I am waiting for my y400 to arrive. As far as heat goes the y400/500 have a very good cooling system. The build quality looks excellent with metal shells instead of plastic, plus the new notebooks just look so attractive.

If you are looking at the y400 vs y480 I would go with the 400 because it looks good, has good specifications, will play the games you mentioned on high and you have an easy way to add another fan or GPU for sli in the ultra bay

That is pretty much what it came down to for me $50 versus upgradeability/utility of the ultrabay, the hybrid drive and asthetics of the newer model (I pulled the trigger last night and ordered it). Seems worth $50 to me.

I've gone though a number of notebooks (M11x, Asus G series and others) looking for a capable, attractive and long lasting portable option. I liked the alienware, but the screen was just too small. Upping it to the M14x would cost more than twice what the Y400 did for similar specs. All in all this one looks like a great deal.

The Y400 appears to have a large air intake on the bottom with a mesh cover, and the side slot fan. It will also be likely that the multibay will support an additional fan to really help with cooling. I had the same concern as my MBP with the 650M, i7 got VERY hot on the keyboard gaming. I would actually pull my hand away like touching a hot stove.

I know the feeling. I picked up a cheap Acer with a 635M and an i7 CPU for a media rig. Left to its own devices, that thing has hit 100 on the CPU temp before (no shutdown though, which I thought was weird since I thought that was the thermal threshold). It made me jump the first time I put my hand in from of the exhaust vent... I was not expecting that much heat!

It sounds like the Lenovo design is leaps and bounds ahead on this model though.
