I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread with all the information pertaining to replacing the (lackluster) display that comes with the Y50.

Information such as which displays will work, how to change it out, videos, links and anything else that can help those wishing to upgrade the display on their Y50.

Post information here, and I'll eventually format the OP with sections, and make it more streamlined. I try to keep this post up-to-date, but if you see some information posted that you think belongs in this original post, send me a PM with it (I might at times be slow reading all new posts).

Note: this thread is about the FHD (1080p) displays, not the UHD.

    Y50 Displays
There currently seem to be two types of panels used
    *AUO36ED (AU Optronics)
    *CMN15C4 (Chi Mei)
*The CMN panel apparently suffers from a yellowish tint. Both panels suffer from poor colour reproduction and bad viewing angles.

    Compatible screen requirements
    *30 pin eDPs
*Y50 uses four screws to hold the display in place

    Compatible screens
*B156HAN01.2 - confirmed by testpecimen - IPS panel
*B156HAN01.1 - confirmed by Shadowvain - IPS panel
*LP156WF4(SP)(B1) - confirmed by AltCtrl - IPS panel
*LP156WF4(SP)(D1) - Confirmed by shillydwagon - Matte IPS panel

    Guides and how-to's
    * Y50 panel removal guide (courtesy of shillydwagon)
    * http://www.laptopscreen.com/ (lots of resources here, including video guides)**This site can ship "compatible" displays - make sure to specifically order the exact panel you want by contacting them.
    * ghyeng posted some good info

    Where to buy
Ebay - lcdtech889 sells the B156HAN01.1, make sure to specifically request that particular panel
laptopscreen.com - Contact LSB here on the forums for more info

Mine is touchscreen - will I lose touch by replacing (does the replacement need to be an IPS touch screen) or is touch functionality something to do with the glass face?

If I need a replacement screen that is itself touch, what IPS touch screen would work?

    Thanks!

When looking for a replacement screen, what are some requirements to finding a compatible screen? Is it limited to the 3 screens ive seen on the component sheet, or can it just be any 15 inch, 30 pin screen?

I have a Sager NP8130 with a 95% ntsc color gamut screen, hardware id: MONITOR\LEN40B2. I want to make the swap and put it in my Y50, would it be compatible?

Pulled out my Y50 non-touch, matte, monitor today to investigate a replacement. Though I'd share pics. Hope this helps the discussion.

Matte, i like them because when it comes to laptop screens you can't control the lighting when you're on the go and it'll catch a lot of reflections. I do prefer glossy when it comes to home desktop screens though.

Also I just finished installing a new 512gb ssd into my Y50 that i ordered from tigerdirect, no problems except make sure to turn on legacy mode in bios when installing windows 7 or lower.

I checked one website that provided some information regarding laptop displays, but if I am not looking at it wrong, the 4K ive seen at least on that website uses eDP signal, while the ones on the Y50 uses LVDS. The connection wont work and there is no small adapter. Should be possible to replace the 4K monitor on the 4K y50 if it uses eDP, but need to check.

Yes, good to point that out. My screen description was from the invoice and included "compatible with p/n LP156WF4(SP)(D1)." For $100, I am willing to take a chance. From their page that you linked, it seem the spec should be identical or very similar. I will post what screen I get. I am hoping it's still a AH-IPS with similar specs. Failing that, if it looks better than the OEM screen, I'll be happy. Someone had to try it, eh?

Hey! thanks for bringing this to our attention.

So if finding a compatible screen is more or less a hit or miss, is there any possibility that those beautiful qhd and uhd Asus IPS screens are compatible with the Y50?

yea this laptop is is pretty amazing but the screen is just really pisspoor, like i have my 3 year old sony vaio se 15 next to it the past 2 days to look up and read things while working on the y50, and the se15 was an ips-like TN panel and it blows it out the water, same with my 6 year old Z1 so no clue what dollar tree discount bin they found the screens for the y50 at. ive never changed a laptop screen and looking at the wires when having the back open yesterday looked a bit daunting. hopefully the model you ordered works, ill snap one up for sure.

The screen is generally connected by a cable that has an connector at the end with clips on it. Same kind of concept as plugging in a graphics card to a motherboard or plugging in a SATA connection. It's really easy. That, and taking out about 4 screws is all that is required for removing the screen.

Well, got the screen in. Went from the stock Chimei Innolux N156HGE-EAB Rev 4 to a Chimei Innolux N156HGE-EB1 Rev 3. Blah. :(

It's a TN panel, according to panellook:
    N156HGE-EB1_Innolux_15.6_LCM_overview_20170

I don't have high hopes for this solution. Maybe I'll hunt down a AUO B156HTN03.

I'll swap it out and let you know if its any better, but it's probably very similar.

No joy. The monitor works during the Lenovo screen, but fails on Windows. In any case, while the Lenovo logo was up, the vertical angle issue was apparent and the same. Avoid Chimei panels.

Anyone got a line on a genuine AUO? :)

What do you mean by saying "fails on Windows"?

I mean the screen goes 3/4 black and 1/4 white with a dotted purple vertical stripe down the middle. It's odd because the Lenovo logo is fine, then wham nothing. I am exchanging the screen. Laptopscreen.com is offering an actual LG LP156WF4(SP)(C1) AH-ISP panel in exchange. I clarified it it is an LG panel.

Funny, because I ordered an IPS compatible LP156WF4(SP)(D1) to get a TN panel (Chimei Innolux N156HGE-EB1 Rev 3). I am asking how someone else might order and get the actual LG screen.

I'll let you guys know how it goes. Crosses fingers.

Here is the reply from laptop when asked how one would specifically order an IPS panel:

"If anyone needs a specific model, they should first verify if we do have it in stock by contacting us via phone or ticket system, and also make a note when placing the order at the checkout in "Shipping note", that specific model is required only, no compatibles.

They can also always contact our rep on Notebookreview forums under the username "LSB" ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/member.php?u=460263) to inquire regarding any specific parts, or really any other questions."

They are exchanging my Chimei Innolux N156HGE-EB1 Rev 3 for a LG LP156WF4(SP)(C1), got the RMA and sent old monitor back. I have to give them props for how quickly this was handled, like a hour from me submitting ticket to getting the RMA. Awesome sauce, that. :)

Again, I'll post how the LG IPS screen works out.

You can just reuse the screws that held in the old screen. Look up a video online for a screen removal of any other laptop. They're all the same concept. Take a look at a few, actually. It's not hard at all.

I am still waiting on exchange.

    ** Update: YouTube Video ***
I was going to do a video once I got a working screen, but this should help:

Use a small plastic membership/rewards card here:
    corner.jpg

Using a reward card will guard against nicks and scratches. Gently work the card in and then twist until you hear to pop. Once the corner is lose, move the card to the inside of the bezel and lift gently and pull the bezel towards the screen middle.

    inside bezel.jpg

The fasteners should pop easily. Worked your way up just below each corner on each side. Do not try the corners yet.

Next, pull the bottom bezel towards you a lift gently, like so:
    20140621_130654.jpg
    (Ew, bad picture, sorry.)

Once you have that loose, you can pull down on the corners and top while lifting slightly/gently and they will come off easy.

This is more complicated than it sounds, once you get it started, it's pretty straight forward. Just be careful not to ding those frame edges when starting with the flat-heads.

After that, there are four small screws on metal tabs attached to the corners of the screen.

Once loose, there is a tape label holding the cable in, carefully peel back and the cable should come out. Don't remove the label entirely as you'll want to use it to help secure the cable connector in place on the new screen.

    tape lable.jpg

    20140621_125516.jpg

    Hope this helps. :hi2:
