have you tried evga pixel clock oc?

That looks like nvidia settings on a desktop. Laptops are far more limited because of Optimus and the only legit way to change the resolution is in intel settings, not nvidia's. Maybe I can try to disable Optimus and try. I'm doing a battery run down test right now so I'll try after that.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015

No, I'll try it soon

Yes but I wonder if this is actually confirmed that the panel is really incapable of 60Hz at lower resolutions, or if the panel is capable but it is simply software locked. -
The colorimeter reads what the screen is capible of producing and then reprograms the colors to the "natural" look photographers need to develop digital pictures. So the %s are the same with or without professional calibration. Samsung and Apple have a habit of making their screens over-saturated, hence the "in your face" colors you see on those screens. The Y50 4k screen was actually pre-calibrated extremely close to what my colorimeter changed it to - there was barely a difference. If you like more saturated colors, you can manually change the settings in intel's graphics control panel.

It's all about bandwidth. I would be shocked if this screen wasn't capable of 60Hz at 1080p. It just doesn't mathematically make sense why it wouldn't. If it's not software locked, someone would have to have intentionally be making PCBs that are 48Hz limited. I've never heard of that so I can only assume it's software. Cameras are also low fps with 4k shooting but higher with FHD shooting because of bandwidth. I really hope it's the same with this.
-
This 48hz thing is the only thing holding me up on ordering a 4k model right now... Really really hoping that there's a solution to get 60hz and fps
Also, are you still having the same keyboard issues xentar? -
it can't be bandwith, eDP can fully support 4k up to 60hz
-
Idea: connect external monitor, change refresh rate, keep settings the same across all viewing devices, disconnect the monitor and see.
Probs won't work, but in absence of a technical solution or modified driver software, it may glitch into function. -
When I get my 4K Y50 I'll see what display modes and refresh rates are available in Linux.
-
What I mean is the bandwidth on the panel, not the graphics card/mobo. Just because eDP can handle it doesn't mean the PCB on the monitor can. That's why people replace their PCB with Overlord or Catleap so they can get 120Hz on their desktop displays. I'm sure if I plugged in an external 4K monitor that was capable of 60Hz, I would have the option to do so. I don't have a 4k monitor but I will try to verify it on a FHD panel and see if I can get 60Hz.
-
That won't do anything since you are setting the refresh rater for the external, not laptop panel. They have different settings that don't interact with each other.

Y50 4K Battery test results. My rundown conditions: full brightness, keyboard backlight on lowest setting, Wifi connected, bluetooth radio off, "balanced" power options and a repeating video in full screen mode. Clock started and ended from unplugging the laptop to self shutdown. The Y50 lasted only 2 hours and 52 minutes. For comparison sake, the Razer Blade lasted 4 hours and 7 minutes and the Ghost Pro(non 3K) lasted 2 hours and 57 minutes with these exact same conditions. Keep in mind, this was only the first cycle of the battery, so it's not totally accurate and there's a chance the next few cycles could be longer. The other two machines were also tested on their first cycle, so it's a valid comparison. I'm pretty sure Engadget does a similar test because my results are usually pretty close to theirs.

Sigh Lenovo, saving cost on a low gamut TN 1080p screen, now also saving cost on a 48 fps locked 4k / downscaled 1080p screen

same here!!

I'm also waiting to see if this issue is resolved. I was about to order this 4k model, but I'm about to go with the sager 860m maxwell model instead if there is no 60hz fix.
-
Someone has to be able to come up with a fix for this 48fps cap issue, the screen is certainly capable so its a software issue, all you geeks get to work!

Best pep talk NA

It's not easy messing with settings that a company like Intel has locked down. They aren't like Nvidia or AMD, who leave doors open for enthusiasts to explore at their own risk. It's funny because when you try to create a custom resolution, it gives you this warning about how you can damage your display and asks you to accept the risk, but then it doesn't allow ANY resolutions to be changed.
I tried CRU and evga pixel clock - neither recognized the display. It's probably because Optimus is driving the settings. As for an external display, I connected one and was able to adjust it normally. I tried to trick the system by duplicating displays and was able to get the 60 Hz setting on both screens. I tested the framerate on both the monitor and the laptop with a DSLR. The display registered at 60Hz but the laptop indicating some skipped frames on some pictures. That doesn't mean the panel isn't capable of going >48fps, it just means the software duplicated the displays and kept the laptop display at 48 and allowed frames to be missed. If it was actually set to 60fps and was incapable, I would have seen artifacts or a scrambled screen. So in short, I'm still stuck without a solution. Tbh, the only ones that can fix the issue is Lenovo - they need to validate it at higher framerates and let Intel know to update their drivers. Chances are, the panel manufacturer gave them a short list of supported resolutions and only one refresh rate, which then got passed along to Intel for their driver support.
I'm open to suggestions but I'm not going to work too much more on it. For days, I tried to get 2560x1440 to work on the Razer Blade and found absolutely no way to do it. But if anyone wants to try it out, you don't need the 4k model to do it. Anyone with any laptop running on Optimus has the same options I do, so if you can figure out a way to use an unsupported resolution and refresh rate, let us know. -
Props for the effort man, do you guys think we could lobby Lenovo to do this? It would only boost their sales, I don't see any harm in it at all from their perspective or even intels really.
-
Let us create a petition and submit it to Lenovo.
They have to listen -
Yes, but not as bad as the other model. This one is more like my other laptop which only misses keystrokes if you lightly tap the very edge of the keys lightly. I think all non-mechanical keyboards suffer from that really. In general, I'm finding the keyboard adequate but I haven't spent much time typing. I'll update after a couple days of use.
-
Can you please try to force 860m through bios and use evga tool after? Try this:
If you wish to lock in high performance GPU all the time, at the expense of reduced run time on battery, Press F1 when booting to enter BIOS.
1) Under Display options, set the GPU to Discrete Graphics
2) Set the OS detection option under it to Disable
3) Save and Exit settings.
4) Reboot, let Windows install drivers -
*Sigh* always one dumb thing or another with this laptop preventing it from being a sure buy. First ac 3160-okay whatever I'll deal. Then screen, fixed with 4k, but now 4k has this stupid issue that really shouldn't be happening at all. I'm just crossing my fingers I don't get the keyboard issues some people are claiming. Why lenovo why
-
Do you have those settings on your Y50? Mine only allowed for switchable or internal graphics only. No option for discrete only.
-
If all else fails, im going with that sager deal with gtx 870m at 1.3k..

Tried disabling HD4600 in device manager and Nvidia becomes disabled as well. I even tried reinstalling the nvidia drivers afterwards but it still wasn't recognized. Interestingly enough, The display adapter that was active was called "Windows display" and I was unable to change my resolution but was outputting in 60Hz(according to this site: Compare frames per second: which looks better?).
-
Interesting! Did you measure the actual, physical frame rate of the screen or only based on software?
-
based on software. I didn't try the camera again. Didn't even think of it. Will try again later.
-
Wait, so by disabling BOTH integrated and discrete it somehow ran in 60 hz, and at 4k too?
Really appreciate all the work you're putting into this
-
I'm with you on this one. After months of hoping the y50 will be a better laptop and a good buy, at this point the direction is pointing me to SAGER. I hope there is a work around in that 4k issue.
-
Sigh.. me too man.. im giving lenovo a chance replace my sager, but these issues keeps popping up.. looks like im going back to good ol' sager
Sent from my HUAWEI P6-U06 using Tapatalk -
Perhaps maybe an Intel driver update can fix the issue.
-
It can and in fact it is the most effective solution as of now. However, the problem is how long will it take for them to update it or even are they going to release an updated driver fixing this

Has been released since April this year. -
Is the viewing angle of non 4k y50 even worse than y510p's?
-
seriously man SAGER? that is crap man, look at the design, I will be absolute ashame to bring that hideous looking laptop to public. seriously man lenovo has put alot of effort making this laptop with a price that is so low and reasonable, and you are not going to buy it just because it has 12 fps less? and that thing has not been confirmed yet if it is going to stay like that or be updated soon, because even apple mbp retina have 60hz (what i am trying to say here is today's screen are capable of 60hz just have to wait patiently and don't be like EA when they released BF4 or Ubisoft trying to be EA with Watch Dogs), I do quite frankly believe that you are making a very rush and somewhat unlogical decision
-
I wouldn't qualify Sager/Clevo as crap. They sell a ton of laptops. Which means a ton of people concluded the pros of a Sager/Clevo outweigh the cons.
Just because you value looks more than function doesn't mean everybody else does.
I personally have no issues bringing my Clevo into public.
Saying his decision is not logical simply because looks aren't as important to him as they are to you is rude, maybe even insulting.alaskajoel likes this. -
Not that I value either one of them less, It suppose to have both aesthetic and function balanced, And yea I think I overly insulted sager but that is not my point, my point is we just have to wait sometimes and not making a rush decision
-
No one is rushing, people are still waiting to find out if there is a fix, and yes 12 fps is a huge deal because fps are capped at 48 fps (even at lower res and lower graphics settings) which is terribly low for most FPshooter titles. Why would anyone who is even semi interested in gaming want to spend over 1500 on a supposedly 'gaming' laptop when you can spend well under 1000 and get the same performance: 48fps with a lower end video card? It totally defeats the purpose.
-
I agree on the rush part, we should wait and see.
-
So I will have to take a wait and see approach and see if there is a 4k 60Hz panel available of the y50 in the future?
-
actually I don't think there's any clevo with 860m that's selling below $1000 if you include the cost to install your OS. unless you have a key ready you are gonna have to spend 100 more for windows OR you can choose to install linux or ubuntu
-
actually, I just looked at toshiba p50t's 4k lcd and it's displaying at 60hz. I think we all thought too complicated and forgot the simplest way - how'bout you just update the intel grahpics driver and see if 60hz is available? if intel released drivers supporting other 4k lcds in 60hz then it might as well work IF the driver is publicHooydonk likes this.
-
I actually narrowed it down between the Sager 860m model and this y50.. I chose the y50 due to the slim form factor and less weight.. The sager looks nice especially the screen.. The KB and trackpad however are cheaply made.. Which is not a huge issue for most including me..
-
What I meant is that if in a 4k y50, you can't even go beyond 48 fps, what is the point of having a 860m in the first place? You aren't maximizing its potential, you aren't even getting close as far as gaming is concerned, so might aswell purchase a much cheaper laptop with a cheaper GPU option than spend 1500 plus on the y50.iori9999 likes this.
-
I agree.. Pretty disappointed with this recent information about the 4K model.. But I wonder if they will release a panel capable of 4K 60 Hz or downgrade 60Hz and can be installed on any Y50 model..
-
@xentar try this?
-
I agree as well
-
True, but there isn't a Y50 (with the i7) that sells for under $1k either. I got my i7/860m Clevo-based laptop for $1040 (including the OS). Pretty much the same specs as the Y50. Check my review in my sig if you want more info.
