I bought a new computer (Lenovo Y50) about a year ago. I didn't use it much since it has Win8. When I was gone for 4 months, I had the computer plugged in. Now when I turn it on, the "turn on" button lights up & the keyboard lights up but the screen just remains black. The indicator lights on the front edge show as:

power icon; light on white (means powered on)
battery icon; light on (means charging)
slash touchpad icon; light off (means touchpad is enabled)
disk icon; blinking about 2X/sec (means reading or writing); I also hear a quiet ticking at the same freq

I did some swipes on the touchpad & clicked the buttons on the touchpad but that did not do anything.

I thought maybe since it's been so long, it was configuring something. But usually it has you log on first. Also, it was in the above state for 45 minutes & nothing changed.

What can I do to debug this? It's quite tragic.

You did the power button thing, unplug the power cord and hit the power button 10 for a second, then once again for 30 seconds? If you've got warranty left, I wouldn't dawdle.

Thanks. Did that (uplug, 30 sec, etc.), but I still have a black screen. I'll see if I'm still under warranty. If not, guess I'll have to take it in to be fixed, unless there are other suggestions out there.

I'm 2 months beyond the warranty. Are there advantages/disadvantages of taking it to an official Lenovo repair shop, or should I just find a local place.

A couple things, have you tried hooking another screen to it, just to make sure it's not the screen that's bad?

Another option would be to pull the memory, hard drive and WiFi card, then plugging in the AC and turn it on to see if it beeps. If so, try putting stuff back to see if you can find the culprit. If not, the board is most likely dead. I don't know where you're at, but if you need a new board, it's likely going to be very costly through official channels. Notebook motherboards, unlike desktops, are highly specialized and there's only one source for them, Lenovo, so they tend to be expensive. You can try and see what they say, but the cost is often near the cost of a new machine, in which case you might be better off parting it out and getting something else. You could look on eBay to see if you can find a board and replace it yourself, if you feel up to it.

Whoa ... that's way over my head. I don't have an external monitor to try. I think it's time for the repair shop. Thanks for the info.
