Ok so the Y500 comes with a 5400 1TB HDD, is this going to strongly affect the loading/boot times of games and programs? I know the data transferring might be noticeably different, but just by how much? Does 5400 decrease the performance of programs? I'd be using the Y500 for video/photo/music programs. I guess to diminish these concerns, just replace it entirely with a SDD. Or combining the 5400 with a SSD will balance things out?

Ok it sounds like it should be ok with the 5400 HDD with mSATA 16GB and if i upgrade to 256 mSATA

you would see very little difference on loading times of games and applications with 7200rpm vs 5400rpm. you'll see much better improvements with ssd. for me, i don't mind 3 to 6 seconds more of loading times with non-ssd in gaming, just doesn't justify the cost.

I would say just get the 5400, get rid of the msata cache if you can, and DIY a aftermarket msata SSD. Unless the upgrade price for 7200 is minimal.

It's actually pretty noticeable from what I've seen.

    Past history for me

5400 RPM about 40-50 secs boot time OS
    7200 30-40 seconds
SSD literally am in about 10-15 seconds....no joke....it's ridiculous what SSDs have gotten to do...my desktop SSD still takes 20-25 too boot into windows and it's only about 1 year older!

I wold opt for 7200 rpm imo, they generally also have better cache as well :) Games will be noticeable between 7200 and 5400...but if you truly want a difference it's SSD :)

Again I'm a bit more sensitive to load times....other ppl might have less strict feelings for load differences.
