I just got my Y500 a few days ago and have been messing around with it. So I read Mobius 1's Kepler overclocking guide and thought, what the heck, let's see what she can do. I raised it to 997mhz the first round and scored P2764 in 3dmark 11, temperatures looked fine at just under 60c, CPU was still running at close to full boost at ~3190mhz so I upped the frequency to 1100mhz and got this:

I have not tried any kind of burn in tests to see how stable everything is but from looking at the temps, I can clock higher still so I'll play around with it some more and report back. But overall, the GT650M is very overclockable. The stock frequency maxed out at 790mhz while running 3dmark 11 even though the overboost was supposed to be at 835mhz. Very easy to do, the computer was completely quiet even though the room was a toasty 75 degrees F. Here's the link to Mobius 1's guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...guide-workaround-max-clocks-oc-stability.html
I ran the test again this morning at 1100mhz and scored a little higher just from the cpu running a little cooler (room temp 60 degrees):

Small update: The GT650M will run the benchmark all day long at 1200/2500 but will crash back out to the desktop in demo mode. I suspect this is a voltage issue because the temps look great, ~70 max for cpu and ~60 max for gpu. Right now I've settled on 1100/2500 but will probably inch up the core freq to find the exact stable limit for the core. Once I figure out how to mess with the vBios, I'll raise the voltage and try again.
Here's a picture of the system, it's sitting on a cool pad but the fan is on low and it's only real purpose is to keep the laptop from suffocating itself on the soft leather surface.
-
Great work on this! We should see 5k in sli.
-
Okay, maybe it is just me, but every time I setup a value for nvidia inspector I it gets 'locked' into that value, and doesn't change unless I use a different value for an underclocked state. This is all fine, however, if I restart/turn off/ close the laptop it then goes to 135/405 and stays there. Not even using my nvidia inspector .bat works to restore the overclocked state.
Here is what I'm using for my overclocked .bat
-
Try this:
nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:0,2,1155 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2555 -forcepstate:0,0
To reset,
nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:0,2,790 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2000 -forcepstate:0,16
I have the two bat files sitting on my desktop so it's as simple as a double click to overclock or to go back to stock after I'm done playing games. Been playing F1 2010 for two days running at 1155/2555 with no issues. Not a single artifact and on ultra setting at 1080p.
-
Just made a few .bat's with the settings you suggested, but now it would seem as though my problem is that my clocks are stuck at 135/405 permanently, even after a driver flush and reinstall.
-
So the .bat files are sitting in the nvidiainspector folder and then the shortcuts are on my desktop so I just double click to set either one.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/39554547/Force P5 (Custom).lnk
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/39554547/Force P16 (default).lnk
Give that a shot, hope it works!
Edit: Here's where I put the shortcuts and I have nvidiainspector sensor monitor running on the side as eye candy.
-
Update: it worked! The force P2 (custom and default) files worked perfectly, the other two however I could not simply double click and run. Regardless, the other two files seem to work just fine and I adjusted them to first the OC's that my laptop is capable of. Thanks so much! -

@n1smo: Hi. Can you please post here some info about notebook temperatures ? (idle, max performance ...) HWInfo will be great. And can you pls post some more photos ? Ill be very greatfull to you.
-
Here's another snapshot from just now
-
@n1smo : Wow, really nice temperatures.(especially disk temperatures) And this is overlocked system ? Nice from you, that you reply to me that quicky. Thanks. I want to buy Sli version and i want to know if i can overclock both cards. Will be temperatures stable ?? I want to know your opinion.
I really appreciate if you post here quick guide how to overclock graphic cards. For example :
1, Do this
2, Do this
3..........
And some pictures from you will be apreciated. (notebook itself)
Thank you very much -
1. Download NvidiaInspector
2. Download the .bat files from this thread and right click on it to edit to fit your directory (where NvidiaInspector is located) and desired frequencies.
3. Double click on .bat file
4. Enjoy.
Here's the guide on how to overclock the gpu by Mobius 1, minor changes to the .bat file had to be made to make it work on the y500.

As far as pictures of the exterior, there's nothing much I can add that isn't on the web already. But here's a good link for tons of info and pics:

Would this overclock also be possible with the ultrabay gpu?

n1smo, what drivers are you using? I was using the 306.0 driver from lenovo and the .bat's you gave me worked fine. Updated to 310.70 and it's kaput again.
-
-
I cleaned out the 310.70 drivers with driver fusion and re-installed them, all is working well... for now.
-
-
Ok, first, don't download driver fusion from cnet because it installed a bunch of malware along with it. Took me an hour just to get rid of all the crap it installed and then you have to pay for the full version of driver fusion in order to supposingly uninstall the driver fully. What a joke, uninstalled driver fusion. Second, 310.70 is a waste of time, no performance increase and you lose brightness control. Back to 306.00 for me.
-
Driver fusion is just what I ended up using, could have probably used another program though. At this point it doesn't matter much as I'll do a clean install tomorrow with my new ssd. Losing brightness control, (I just noticed it) is a biggie though. 100% brightness is a waste sometimes and makes the already easy-to-kill battery go all the faster. Really wish this amazing laptop had at least another hour or so of battery life, 3 hours is a bit abysmal.
Edit: according to nvidia if you want brightness control stick with 306.97, but that it will most likely be fixed by 313.xx

I've got a problem. I can't seem to overclock my Y500 GT650M no matter what I do. A friend of mine told me that the gpu Clock speed is locked somewhere...
I got the nvidia drivers from the lenovo site. What I noticed was that there was a ExtMax shown at nvidiainspector. It's value is set at 790. I'm completely newb at this, and i can't figure out why it won't overclock. Maybe someone can help me? -

306.97 drivers do not read my gpu...all the other drivers read the gpu except for this one
i am running the 306.30 form the lenovo.cn. is there much of a difference from .97? -
Mine is stuck without overclocking, can any one help me?
-
Still got the same problem...
-
Going to do this as soon as i get mine next week

Any idea how to make that batch file work for an SLI setup? It only works for the one card, the other stays at stock settings, which is not the optimal setup.
Please let me know if it's possible as I would love to share some SLI settings both at stock and OC speeds
Edit: well I got 2 separate ones to work for the 2 cards, just trying to make it all work in 1 file now.
I'll post stuff up tomorrow. -
you can make a bat file to run the other bat files
-
Glad you got it to work! Please post some 3dmark11 and temperature numbers!!!!

If anyone wants me to show anything else let me know....

Don't think the site has a file upload besides images; I am pretty new to this forum.... I could upload them to an external source, but here is the code if you want to just make a batch out of a text document.
Force Overclock:
@echo off
c:
cd\
cd "nvidiaInspector\"
nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:0,2,980 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2300 -forcepstate:0,0
nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:1,2,980 -setMemoryClock:1,2,2300 -forcepstate:1,0
||-forcepstate:0,5
||-forcepstate:1,5
Restore Stock Speeds:
@echo off
c:
cd\
cd "nvidiaInspector\"
nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:0,2,790 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2000 -forcepstate:0,16
nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:1,2,790 -setMemoryClock:1,2,2000 -forcepstate:1,16 -
this is great thanks a lot

FurMark 1.10.3 Released - 3D Tech News and Pixel Hacking - Geeks3D.com -
Here's my peak stable setting 1155/2555. Running FurMark and 3DMark11 as well as playing Far Cry 3 for hours. I've tried running at 1200/2500 when the laptop was brand new and it would go through 3DMark11 benchmark all the way through but will crash out to the desktop when running the demo. Since replacing the thermal paste to AS5, it will no longer run through the benchmark at 1200/2500 and will crash almost immediately to the desktop. I've tried every technique applying the AS5 and have reinstalled the heatsink over 10 times so do not mess with your stock heatsink. The caked on thermal paste they use works!

I will gladly run furmark... I will not however overclock that much. I am happy with where they are, and Once I break 1000 on the core, I started to see artifacting during the 3d11 run, so I pulled mine back to 980/2300. I also expect to keep this thing for a few years and don't want to kill anything.
I'll download and post up in a few. -
Furmark:
Seems it only stresses one card and not the 2nd for some reason.... either way, I ran it; 87 was max temp...that is plenty hot and I won't push these cards anymore than they are
Ran 3d 11 just for the heck of it at 1050/2450 and got the following: not a huge bump, and my physics score went down a lot for some reason...
-
Very nice. I think the reason the physics score went down is because the CPU is throttling. There's a great thread in this forum on how to use a program called ThrottleStop to prevent the CPU from throttling down. You'll get your physics score back.
-
Good to know... yea I just ran it two more times; best score of 4488, but physics still stuck in the 6100 range. I will look it up later and see what happens.
Seems the artifacting is gone too, maybe these things just needed to break in a little. I might keep this clock, as the temps are only 1-2C hotter, and it's obviously slightly faster. -
-
I thought it would be interesting to run a Furmark test at 980/2300 to see what my temperatures look like compared to your system and this is the result:
I don't know what variables are different other than that I've replaced the thermal paste from the stock to AS5 but from initial analysis, it looks like that the AS5 did make a significant difference at least when compared to your system. I wish I had run Furmark before I decided to tear my laptop apart but I am almost certain that when the laptop was stock, it was cooler than it is now. This is comparing 3DMark11 demo temperatures where right now I see around 70C and back then it was in the low 60C's. This leads me to believe that in your particular case, you can benefit by reapplying thermal paste but the benefit would not outweigh the cost, which is voiding the warranty as specially with all the issues the Y500 seems to be having with keyboard/touchpad. Anyway, room temperature was a toasty 73F but I doubt ambient temperature would play a big role. The only other thought I have is that when I tested the temps when the system was stock, I had a cooling pad under it with the fan running on low. I've been on the road so no cooling pad in the recent tests, I'll run the temp tests again when I get home but I doubt it will get much better. Thinking out loud.
-
I am obsessed with temperatures right now. Can you run Furmark also? -
Very interesting thread
