    Thanks, now what foreseeable problems would come of this other then increased CPU temperatures.

    And finally I found someone with the 3632QM. Yeah. Here is mine for comparison. 3630QM.

    View attachment 96772

    Clock speed is about the same, but the TDP is lower on yours. About 44W on mne and 35.6W on yours. Temp is also a bit different, on average 4-5C higher on the 3630QM. I am running this with the computer resting on a table. Having a laptop cooler pad doesn't help my temp much. Less than 5C difference. It makes me think that the limitation is with the heatpipes and the heatsink not being able to dissipate heat fast enough.

    Ah by the way my power limits are greyed out because I have the MSR lock power setting on in the BIOS. I set the limits in the BIOS.

    I am also curious, did the Y500 come stock with 3632QM or did you replace it? I was thinking about it, but now Haswell is released I see no point replacing it anymore. It doesn't run that hot too. The only gripe I have is that the area of the palmrest on top of the main heatsink gets rather hot.

    I re-ran Unigine to match n1smo's settings. With 8xAA scores dropped a lot. I am only getting about 528. I guess that's about as much as you can squeeze from the GT650M/GT750M.

    I don't know if the Ultrabay GPU is supposed to run hotter, it just seems to do so for most people. Here are the temperatures I get in BF3:

    HWiNFO64.PNG ThrottleStop.PNG

    Ultrabay GPU is always within +/- 2C of the main one. It's the CPU that runs way too hot due to me using ThrottleStop. I don't want to disable Turbo Boost to reduce heat because Battlefield 3 multiplayer really uses a lot of CPU and uses it effieciently. I can see all 8 threads loaded up pretty significantly while in-game and the overall CPU usage is ~50%. My FPS definitely drops if I disable Turbo Boost.

    It seems to be application-dependent though. In Heaven the internal GPU runs almost 10C cooler, but in games they're about even.

    Well your >700 score was on lower settings so that's not a fair comparison. n1smo is running it at 1080p fullscreen with 8x MSAA and everything else maxed out. Seeing that he's already at 1225/2575 he should be close to what you got if he used your settings. Quite amazing for the 650M SLI since he's running around 0.1V lower voltage than you. Must be the benefit of the high ASIC quality.

    Speaking of ASIC quality, lower leakage will allow you to overclock higher on air and higher leakage will allow you to overclock higher on water and liquid nitrogen. Since this is a laptop we obviously want the highest ASIC possible.

    My voltage is 1.162V on GPU1, 1.15V on GPU2. What's yours?

    Unfortunately my ASIC quality is 65% on main GPU and 72% on Ultrabay GPU.

    The stock voltage goes up to 1.15V on the 750M, if I am not mistaken. Maybe I should go back and see if I can lower the voltage.

    But recently I just want to game more than playing with these settings. Also I realized that single GPU solution is superior due relatively lack of micro stuttering as compared to SLI. I also rather dislike the heat that the Ultrabay GPU is pushing onto my right hand. That vent placement is not good.

    Lenovo should learn from MSI. The upcoming GS70 Stealth has much better design: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi...-2013-haswell-700m-series-14.html#post9210360

    Oh OK. For some reason I thought I saw somewhere that you were running both GPU's at 1.2V. Why are the voltages different ?

    The stock voltage of the GT 750M is 1.125V, which is exactly 0.1V higher than the GT 650M. So both your cards are slightly overvolted.

    I was at stock 1.025V. n1smo is at 1.1V I believe. Both of us have GT 650M SLI.

    I always game with SLI. The microstuttering at lower FPS doesn't bother me at all. All my games average at least 60 FPS anyway so I almost never dip that low. If I have to, I turn down the graphics settings to maintain 60 FPS, but for most games I can run maxed out or close to it. I get about half the performance with a single GPU.

    What games can't you already run maxed out or close to it on a single 750M? 750M SLI is pretty much overkill for 768p. Are you using an external display? Unless you bump up the screen res or find other areas to increase GPU load SLI scaling won't be as good due to being a little CPU-limited.

    When I get home I will investigate why the block wasn't checked. I suspect it might be because I had PhysX turned off (set to CPU). I did that because in auto, it set PhysX to the ultrabay and I thought I could take some load off of that gpu and help cool it down a little. Just haven't gotten around to set it back to auto. But it seems that I get higher scores in Heaven if I set PhysX to CPU. Anyone want to weigh in on that? You would hope the i7 is powerful enough to handle game physics by itself without the help from the gpu's.

    I just leave PhysX to auto-select. Usually setting PhysX to CPU disables it entirely in games because the CPU, even a fast one like the i7, is nowhere near as fast as even a low-end GPU for it. If the CPU were processing the full range of PhysX effects it could easily be pegged at 100% and slow everything down. PhysX is supposed to be GPU-accelerated. I remember using the PhysX plugin in Autodesk Maya on my ASUS G73Jh which had the ATI Mobility Radeon 5870 and even small demos like a few blocks falling or a ball bouncing would run at like 5 FPS because my CPU was processing it.

    Your PhysX setting should have no impact on Heaven scores because it does not use PhysX.

    I shall try that. Highest score I could get was 535.

    The Ivybridge is quite powerful. A single GPU GT750M scores about the same as the CPU in Physx Fluidmark.

    Which CPU is that? The vast majority of CPU PhysX is floating-point math instead of SSE and even the average mid-range GPU is several degrees of magnitude faster in floating-point and parallel processing performance compared to a high-end quad-core or hexa-core CPU. In any case, if PhysX is maxing out the CPU then the game will slow down dramatically. The CPU still needs to process other things in the game as well as manage the rest of the system. Which is why it's much more efficient to shift that load to the GPU as much as possible so that the CPU can concentrate on other things without slowing the game down. The CPU is nowhere near as powerful as the GPU for the massively parallelized tasks in a modern PC game but it does do other things faster or more efficiently than the GPU can.

    I keep forgetting that you guys have ac too, I was thinking of getting a portable ac unit for my room being I can get a really good deal on one and using dryer exhaust to make a custom piece to route cold air while I game. I already have a laptop cooler. It just sucks that the ambient temperatures out here are so high and the humidity, and its only climbing do to summer. I'm at about 1500 ft elevation. Here's what its like out here. Haiku, HI Weather Forecast from Weather Underground

    Well, it's gotten hot here the last couple of days and I'm now idling in the 40's and internal gpu is up to 97C and throttling under Furmark. The laptop is much warmer to the touch when idle, even as I am typing this, my palm rests are warm. The Y500/Y510p with the GT750M must have better cooling because I can't see how they can run at 1.13v and not be throttling due to temperatures otherwise. I'm still waiting on the cooling pad to get here and I refuse to turn the ac on!!!! I think I'm going to flash back down the stock voltage until I find a solution to the temp issue that has suddenly dropped in to say hi. I even re-pasted the cpu/gpu last night to see if it would help, nope! Luckily for me, I can run at 1.025v and still overclock to 1155/2555 stable.

    What temperature do you get for the Ultrabay on stock volts at 1155/2555? Your situation sounds pretty extreme, but then again I don't know how hot your ambient temperatures are. You could be in a sauna for all I know.

    The Y500/Y510p with GT 750M doesn't have better cooling. People who overclocked those systems were getting to 100C with the core below 1200 MHz. So far the only owner I'm aware of who's pushed it over 1200 MHz without getting into the danger zone is kh90123, but he performed a cooling mod on his machine.

    This is what kind of cooler I have, NZXT Cryo X60 Notebook Cooler RN-CRX60-B1 | NZXT Cryo X60,RN-CRX60-B1,156710107972,Notebook Cooler,Benchmarks,Performance,Review,Mark Pedersen,NZXT Cryo X60 Notebook Cooler RN-CRX60-B1 Benchmark Performance Review by Mark Pedersen , you can find it cheaper around $30, I like it because it has its own wall plug power source instead of the normal usb powered cooler, plus you can remove to top panel and swap out the fans, the only problem is the fans have to be 20mm thick or smaller and there aren't a lot of companies that make these size case fan but I did find a nice supply of them. Now what I trying to do is find a power supply that is more then 5v being that 120mm case fans run on 12v supply so I can run the fan at higher speeds, so far I've found a power supply, its one of those adjustable one, range is 3.5v,6v,7.5v,9v, and 12v. The only problem is its one of those universal power supplies with the removal tips and I cant find a tip that's fits.

    That looks like a bad cooler but I went for something much simpler, the Notepal U2. You must get pretty good results from that thing.

    Back if the day, when it was cold the machine ran at around 83C max with the 15min burn-in in Furmark. Since I've flashed to the 1.1mv bios, I have not run a full 15min Furmark test because it has throttled everytime and maxed out at 97C.

    [IMG]

    Edit: Just noticed you asked about the Ultrabay. It usually runs about 4-7C hotter than whatever the internal gpu is running at.

    I don't know, the Fluidmark doesn't really work well with the SLI on Y500. The score said a single GPU scored not much higher than the 3630QM though.

    I performed a few mods, not just one. :D

    Even so, if I run Folding @ Home, and put the CPU in Turbo (45W TDP limit, set in BIOS), and run the GPU at their overclocked settings, the CPU will still go up to 100C easily. The GPU stays relatively chill at 70-80C.

    Furmark doesn't really work well with SLI so I don't bother with it anymore. I am really thinking of getting the new Alienware 17inch, or the MSI GT-70. Gotta wait till E3 at June 10th.

    By the way, I have new thermal paste now, the Masskool Shin Estu G751. Gosh it's such a tiny tube. I might do a repaste and see how things go if I have the time, which won't be till after 19th this month.

    Also, having a notebook cooler under the Y500 doesn't help at all. At least on mine. It might make about 3C difference at most. In my opinion, it's the heatsink and the heatpipes that can't dissipate enough heat + limited fan speed that're the reason this laptop runs hot. The huge vent under it makes sure that the fans always get enough air.

    So I was looking around for a better laptop cooler and found this Customer Image Gallery for Acerninja , he just to the shell of the cooler and added 3 after market 120mm fan, spliced everything together with this Inline , and you just use a power supply to match. Looking in to this even more.

    Yeah, if I would have done it again I would have gotten the U3. The webpage said the U2 supports up to 17" laptop but in reality it is way too small. Oh well, it works. My CPU/GPU temps are down but the palm rests are still hot. I'll just keep the A/C on.

    I was wondering if there was any type of voltage or fan regulator that could be added to act as a fan controller so the fans wont run at high speeds all the time?

    Hi there, my first post here, hopefuly it will be useful for someone:

    Newest drivers (320.18) are supposed to be working with nvidia inspector ovecloking method, so I've tried them on my Y500 (i7+2x650M) and voilà they really work!

    I've used this in my overclocking .bat file:
    @echo off
    nvidiaInspector.exe -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,135 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,250 -setGpuClock:0,2,1100 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2500 -forcepstate:0,0
    nvidiaInspector.exe -setBaseClockOffset:1,0,135 -setMemoryClockOffset:1,0,250 -setGpuClock:1,2,1100 -setMemoryClock:1,2,2500 -forcepstate:1,0
    ||-forcepstate:0,5
    ||-forcepstate:1,5

    and this for restoring default settings:
    @echo off
    nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:0,2,790 -setMemoryClock:0,2,2000 -setBaseClockOffset:0,0,0 -setMemoryClockOffset:0,0,0 -forcepstate:0,16
    nvidiaInspector.exe -setGpuClock:1,2,790 -setMemoryClock:1,2,2000 -setBaseClockOffset:1,0,0 -setMemoryClockOffset:1,0,0 -forcepstate:1,16

    So the overclocked clocks are 1100/2500 and I got 4710 points in 3DMark 11 on default settings (Graphics score was 4789; here is direct link to the result, not sure how long will it work though: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor,LENOVO INVALID score: P4710 3DMarks ) - that's well beyond mobile GTX 675MX in one click of a button (ok, two clicks :-D)! I also tried 3DMark Vantage and the score was P15999 (Graphics 15676).

    I've tried few runs of 3DMark and about an hour of Metro 2033 without any glitches.

    With stock clocks, I had to play on High settings and DX10 mode In Metro and it still wasn't completely fluent in every scene, now I can max everything out (4xAA, DX11, very high) and it's between 25 and 30 fps so I just switched to DX10 mode and have silk-smooth gameplay (I thinks its at least 40 fps - its really absolutely smooth even when something is exploding) - the difference in picture quality between DX11 and DX10 is negligible in this game anyway.

    Temps after this testing maxed at 78/75°C on GPU 1/2 (yes, my ultrabay GPU is actually cooler then the internal one, it has even slightly better ASIC quality) and 79-84°C on CPU cores. I have Cooler Master L1 cooling pad (about 17€ ;) which is great, because its fan blows directly on CPU. Its about as loud as Y500 in load (so it's quite loud) but I have it switched on only when gaming, so I don't care much.

    EDIT: I had the cooling pad turned off at the start of my first testing, so the peak temperatures were with just the notebook's cooling system. I've tried 3 more 3DMark runs and temps were 73/70°C GPU 1/2 and less then 80°C on CPU cores. My guess is, that even after hardcore gaming seasson temps won't cross 75°C GPU and 82°C CPU with decent cooling pad.

    Can't wait for some next gen games :D

    Yes, when you are overclocking with Nvidiainspector. If you use MSI Afterburner, it will adjust your clocks dynamically but you'll need to use a modded bios to overclock above 135mhz. You can find them over at the Techinferno forum.

    I thought 320.18 still allows some overclock but apparently not. If you want, you can try one of the older drivers. I know for sure 310.90 will let you overclock because that was what I was using before I flashed to the modded bios. Maybe the 314 series will work too... Just have to play around. Hi ns1mo ... I too have overclocked my GT650M to 1155/2555 ... but it crashes to the desktop while playing some games ... using nvidia inspector ... have 2 bat files .. one for P0 and one for default ... any idea how i can get rid of this ? voltage changes perhaps ?

    I have overclocked the GT650M to 1155/2555 on the m14x r2 ... some games crsh to desktop while playing ... any reason y this is happening ? should i change the voltage ?

    Well, you are on a different laptop completely so it can be a number of things. But you are correct, it will help greatly if you flash to a vbios with raised voltage. The GT750M runs at 1.13v out of the box as an example. For the Y500 with GT650M crowd, we have a bios that will raise voltage to 1.1v. With that, I was running at 1250mhz core/ 2600mhz mem. However, the cooling in the Y500 is inadequate for that voltage, at least not in the summer so I've flashed back down to the 1.025v bios. It really is just the luck of the draw to be honest with you. Some processors can overclock higher than others, I've read of some that can run at 1200mhz at stock voltage. When the laptop was brand new, I was able to go through 3DMark11 at 1200mhz and posted a score but it would crash out to the desktop when running on demo loop. Anyway, go to TechInferno and see if they have some modded bios there. One of the guys there, SLV7 is very helpful and as popular as Alienware laptops are, you should have no trouble finding help.

    Easy, lower your overclock until it's stable. No two graphics cards overclock the same and you have to test to find your own stable number. You can't just use what someone else has and expect it to be stable, unless your GPU can already handle it.

    thanks for ur quick reply ... i did find slv7's posts on a couple of websites but they are all for the A03 versions of the BIOS for the m14x ...no for the A09 ... if u can tell me how i can flash the volatge (currently is 1.037V at 1155/2555) that would be great

    Despite the warm weather, I got bored and decided to play around with the 1.1v bios. The GT650M is definitely a good overclocker. The issue with the Y500 when compared to the Y580, Updated Y500, and the Y510p is that the memory can't be pushed as high. I can run my memory at 2600mhz max, where as the guys with the newer Y500's w/ GT750M can run their memory up to 3000mhz. Anyway, still fun to play around. No way I would play games all day with these kind of overclock settings.

    I think he meant safest overclock in general, not what works for you. The correct answer is there is no right answer and you have to test it out yourself to see what your own highest stable speeds are. Chances are you're most likely not going to hit n1smo's numbers because he's got a golden sample GPU it seems.

    I have tried overclocking with nvidia inspector just to run 3dmark11, got same results as stock (~3700), so I went back to default clocks, but I have noticed something.. gpu 1 goes full load for a couple seconds every now and then making it reach ~51C when it does it, even when its on idle.. otherwise it stays at around 42C while gpu 2 always stays @ ~39C.
    its really annoying since I am on stock clocks, is there any fix for this?? I'm pretty sure this never happened before I used nvidiainspector

    I don't know yet as I just got a new machine. I'm currently in the process of doing a clean install. After that, I will need to open it up to repaste the CPU and GPU. Only then can I get around to the overclocking. I usually test and bench for about a week before I find my absolute stable clocks. I also happen to have finals at school next week so all of this will be put on hold until that's over. Which means I won't be able to get back to you on this for a few more weeks.

    On the machine I returned, my maximum, 24/7 stable clocks were 1120/2250.

    I just realized that my nvidia inspector shows my BIOS as (modified). I have never done anything to the BIOS ever. The only thing I have ever done to the computer is reinstall the drivers and install nvidia inspector and then run Overclock scripts. Why does my BIOS appear as modified? Here is a picture

    No it's my 3rd Y500. I don't want a Y510p anyway because it has no mSATA.
