5 hours must be mostly idling with WiFi turned off and brightness at minimum. I don't think it's possible to get that much with regular usage, web browsing, and the like on any system with this hardware and no graphics switching.
The program is called Lenovo Energy Management and it's already installed on your system. One of the few programs I kept after doing my clean install. I personally don't have much use for it since I'm always out and about at school and such and setting the charge limit to 60% would never work for me.
There's also also a Dust Removal option which sounds good in theory but in reality it doesn't really do anything. All it does is cycle the system fan or fans (if you have SLI) at maximum speed for a while which is not the way to get dust out of the system. If anything, it'll just suck in more dust from the air intakes. The most effective method is to remove the bottom panel, stick a pencil in the fan to hold it still, and blow into the vents with a can of compressed air.

Wifi on, internet surfing, document editing, brightness on medium, keyboard light on, power saving mode. Keep in mind it's the y400 with a smaller screen too. Less power consumption. I could drive up the battery life even higher by using throttlestop to keep the cpu speed down to about 1000Mhz, with a multiplier of 10.
-
Does anyone know what gen SATA the Y500 has for the 2.5 HD. Is it compatible with the newer SATA Gen3 (6 Gbps)? I tried using hwinfo to look it up. I think it said the SATA Host Controller was Gen3 6Gbps but the Sata Port #0 and #1 were Gen2 3Gbps. I'm not sure if that was cause the ports were connected to Gen2 HDs or if those ports can only go to Gen2 3 Gbps speeds.

I just installed my 64Gb mSATA SSD from Crucial thanks to this guide: link
8Gb for Rapid Start and 51Gb for ExpressCache. Hopefully my system will be blazing fast soon!
This is very helpful. Since I rarely use my battery, the 80% charge will keep it alive for as long as possible. -
On the Lenovo it's 60% not 80%. Anyway, if you take some basic preventative measures, such as not doing a lot of full discharge cycles and storing with some remaining charge, the battery will last you longer than the laptop will.
-
Kibble Fat - is that approach better than just using the mSATA as a second hard drive and simply installing your games there, so that they launch much faster? That's what I was planning to do, but maybe I'm missing something.
-
If I were to use the mSATA as storage, the operating system would be first in line to be on it. However, since 64Gb will not fit my OS and games -- and because I don't feel like re-installing Windows -- I've chosen to use it as a cache for the time being. I'm also curious about SSD cache performance. Compared to strait SSD Windows 8 and game installs, I hope to get 90% of the loading speeds with cache.
The cache drive is meant to store copies of your most used documents, Windows files, and programs (etc.) so they load more quickly. If your budget affords you a 128Gb SSD it would be wise to install your OS and games on it. Do consider leaving 8-16Gb for a cache partition to cover some of everything else if you have space left over. You can always shrink the cache size later. -
Do anyone else have some issues with the second GPU suddenly not showing up..??
-
Can you tell if the msata you installed supports SATA III Speeds?
-
Nop, what is your problem with that?
-
Try removing the Ultrabay and blowing off any dust that may be on the contacts.
It's probably SATA II. See the specs here: link
What do you need SATA 3 for? Relevant speed comparison. -
I've looked through that document but it seems to only indicate the sata speed of the HD that it comes with.
I didn't know that the port wouldn't make that much of a difference. I figured if the speed was capped, I could buy a older or cheaper model and get the same performance.
I was considering the Samsung 840 Pro which benchmarks at around ~500Mbps Read and Write but if its capped at 300Mbps, i'd buy a cheaper model. -
Is there a walkthrough or FAQ somewhere that will tell me how to set up part of the drive as storage? I found the walkthrough that shows how to set up part of the drive as an express cache.
-
Have a look at the link in my earlier post. It tells you how to set up Rapid Start or ReadyCache partitions of a size you specify. In Disk Management, when you have unallocated space on the drive you should be able to format just the partition (NTFS).

Can i buy a lenovo y500 with the i5 processor and upgrade it myself with the i7-2670qm processor i have in my sager laptop?
-
They should both be removable, so only if they use the same socket.
-
Yes you can. The socket is the same and the machine is 'compatible' with Sandi Bridge processor. However, I do not recommend doing that as the 3630QM is probably a much better processor and you may get it for about the same price as the i5. I recommend only doing this if you have a better processor like an 3740QM/3840QM processor.
I do not know why it has been posted twice, I removed one note... Please moderator, delete this message if it bothers anyone. Thank you. -
He says he already has the 2670QM from another PC.
BTW noticed that you have GT 750M SLI listed in your sig. What's the deal with that? -
Character Zero Notebook Evangelist
He posted about it in another thread. He ordered the 750m y400 and the ultrabay card. They told him it was 750m in the ultrabay, but I don't think anyone knows. The question is if the ultrabay card is a 750m or if its a 650m if it works in sli with the 750m in the laptop. I think that have an ultrabay 750, since they are selling a dual 750m y500 on the site. -
I know he has a 2670QM and I understood that. But what is the point in adding that into the system when it is most probably at the same performance as the i5? Better get straight away an updated system from Lenovo with the i7 3630QM and sell his 2760QM. It was just a statement and I hope that clears your doubt...
-
Naw the 2670QM is way faster than the i5. He knows it so that's why he was asking if he could put it in the Lenovo.

I have searched around for a bit and could not find this concern I have.
Just purchased the Y500 yesterday, everything's good, trackpad is tolerable, but I have one concern.
The POWER BUTTON is fully functional but seems loose. Loose meaning when I touch or press on it lightly, the plastic button
have a bit of play in it. It can be moved around (slightly) laterally and can hear the plastic rubbing against plastic noise. When I press it (lightly
not to turn off the computer just sorta play with it), the power button has a bit of a play vertically as well.
I do not know the inner construction of laptops much but I wonder if anyone else's Y500 power button behave the same or am I overly concerned?
I have been a macbook pro user for centuries and this is scary step for me back to PC hardware, perhaps I am over reacting but any opinion
is greatly appreciated.

Has anyone received one recently? I am waiting on mine..
Y500
95412ZU,
1TB 5400, 16msata, 16gm ram, blu ray and 650m. Windows 8
The reason I ask, I've been reading threads stating that the 16msata isnt functional, and that I have to do some finaggling with install/uninstalling programs to get it to work.
If someone has received theirs with msata ssd that could let me know if the caching is working from factory on windows 8 or if im going to have to go through a lot of steps/guides to get the sucker to work..
thanks -
Has anyone had problems with the hdmi? it shows up in devices but nothing will apear on the monitor. ive tried different drives and ive tried display in the control panel but no luck so far.
-
If anything, I've found the hdmi on the laptop might be picky about what hdmi cords you use. I had a major issue with an otherwise perfectly good hdmi cord that just didn't like carrying a signal from my y400 (gave me all kinds of image problems). The problem was resolved by me going out and buying a different hdmi cord
. Try using a different hdmi cord and see if it helps.

Hey guys I have one question about the SSD. I will buy a 256ssd but I'm in doubt about the Sata or msata. Which one should I get?
What is the difference?
Tks -
Sata is the regular sized port you'd use to replace the installed 1TB hard drive. mSata is the mini Sata used in some models for the 16gb cache SSD. I'd say don't worry about the latter, and just get yourself a good Sata3 SSD to replace the stock drive with.
-
Thanks man. I was thinking about leaving the 1Tb there and replace the 16gb msata for a 256 what do you think?
-
If you can get a good price, that's exactly what I was thinking of doing. I heard something about the mSata not being able to reach full speeds? I can't elaborate on that... But I'd really rather use the Ultrabay for SLI instead of a hard disk or the internal slot rather than an external one, because let's face it, the SSDs aren't exactly high capacity. Keeping Windows on it should be a lot quicker though,
-
i ended up using the same cord, but changing the settings in my graphics card and verifitying what time of tv i was trying to connect it too. after that i works great.
Has anyone had any problems with the performance in gaming slowing down? I was playing plantside 2 yesterday and it worked fine on high, but now even when i play it on med its choppy and there is lag. it take about 1-2 seconds for it to respond to my commands. i just recently updated the Nvidia driver, but that shouldn't slow it down right? -
sorrownightshade Notebook Consultant
could of slowed it down, sometimes older drivers are more optimized/efficient.
try a rollback and see if it works better.? -
Just curious, but have Nvidia made new drivers for the 650m yet?
If I stick with the old ones, can it still play new games well? -
The one i "upgraded" to was 314.22. It said it increases your performance in bioshock infinite by 40% and tomb raider by 61% compared to 314.07 . i cant imagine that would make my notebook slower.
ill give that a try but the 314.22 is suppose to increase performance in games like bioshock infinite and tomb raider not make it worse. I did a heaven benchmark test and i got about half the score this laptop is suppose to. I also did a 3d mark11 benchmark test and got a similar score, but they said my system was running normally. it seems like a load of crap to me because on youtube and even on this website people have mentioned they are getting double what im getting on these benchmarks without sli or crossfire. btw did you have to install CUDA or directx 11 manually? -
Did you make sure that sli is enabled in the nvidia control panel?

I read somewhere, (cant locate) that our Y500's are sata 3 capable?. Reason I ask is I want to buy a 256gb mSata, or a 128gb mSata but I want to buy one that supports Sata 3 if our laptop supports sata 3. Anyone confirm or deny?
-
Broseph this is 2013 for crying out loud. Everything new is SATA III capable. We've had SSD's that have been saturating SATA III for almost 2 years now. The main SATA port and Ultrabay SATA port in our Y500 are both 6 Gb/s.

HI GUYS!
Anyone having a problem when you right click a file and the drop down menu is so slow? ( Only happens if on SLI mode) when i remove the other extra vcard the right click responds well.
:/
Any help would be great.

If I did a clean install of Win8 on the default C: partition and didn't touch the other partitions, would one touch recovery still work if needed?

It's true. I've done it a few times now. This link will help you a lot: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/695285-how-clevo-usb-efi-install-windows-8-a.html

Hey peeps. My brother just received his Y500 650 SLI today, and was going to the lenovo page for the new nvidia drivers from April 17th, except when he clicks on it, he gets a 'file not found message'. when he tries the batch downloader, it pops up a message box with a filename, but nothing happens.
Has anyone been able to successfully download it, and if so, could you post it somewhere?
I was able to replicate his issues from my machine. -
Character Zero Notebook Evangelist
Get them from the Nvidia website. -
One doesn't have to use the lenovo specific drivers for the SLI config?
