Anyone else experiencing erratic and uncontrollable pointer when using the touchpad? When I restart the issue goes away, but comes back after a few minutes making the laptop unusable without an external mouse. I checked the Lenovo website forum and so far I see a couple Y500 owners are having this issue. No touchpad drivers available on the site either. Also, my touchpad feels a little clunky and has some give before the the actual click. Trying to figure out if this is a hardware issue due to poor build quality or driver related.
-
Yeah im on the Y400 and the touchpad sucks i dont think its the driver either i just think they skimped out on the touchpad. Can barely 2 finger scroll on webpages
-
if it's anything like the Y580/480, there's only one clicker in the center. Left click and right click will normally have some give.
-
Yeah, my Y500's touchpad went cuckoo last night for the first time in 3 days. Once I put the computer to sleep and woke it back up everything was fine. Hope this is something they can fix with a software update!
-
Having one clicker in the center makes sense why the left and right side of the touchpad would slightly rock or give before clicking. It sucks when they pretty much get everything else right (cooling, audio, keyboard, etc.) and put out a clunky touchpad. I also noticed when I put my Y500 to sleep the touchpad issue momentarily goes away. I checked the official Lenovo forum and no one from Lenovo has responded yet to this issue.
-
Mine is almost unusable now. Posted in other thread. Anyone done driver updates that helped the problem?
-
I've looked everywhere and there is no updates or support for this issue. My Y500 is completely unusable w/out an external mouse. Probably going to send it back don't have time to mess with this issue. I'm disappoint.
-
Ok I uninstalled and reinstalled the touchpad drivers from the hard drive that came with it (I put in my own ssd). It's working fine now and I'll see if the issue comes back then give another update.
-
-
Can someone post a youtube video of this? I can't seem to recreate the issue on my Y480. However, I did immediately install Windows 7 on it.

maybe it's just a software problem
uninstall the driver and use the basic microsoft driver that comes with windows.
You won't get the fancy crap that comes with the synaptics driver, but at least it should work in a basic way -
I deleted the touchpad from the Device Manager and rebooted. The system repaired windows automatically, and I never had that problem again.
-
I tried using the basic MS driver and even that didn't work. It always comes back after an hour or two. I've also tried uninstalling from device manager with no success. I called Lenovo and returning it.
-
I strongly urge anyone interested in this laptop to hold off purchasing until this issue s sorted out. I have over $2,000 of mostly unusable junk.
Has anyone tried the driver on the Chinese site for win7 inside win8? It is a newer driver. -
Does anyone have a working touchpad?
-
-
Probably most of y500 which was bought in usa has this issue because i checked china and malaysia site neither of them mentioned about it.i hope my y500 has not this problem, which was bought in san francisco
.i am going to have it on next thursday.i ll let you know whether it has this issue or not.
-
I also suspect that this is a software issue. I'm going to update my drivers off the chinese site and see if the issue comes back. It's happened at least once a day for me but it is a easy fix, all I had to do with put the computer to sleep and wake it back up and the problem goes away. I wonder if it has something to do with the Lenovo Intelligent Touchpad 2.0 software, have no idea what this thing does but I have not tried disabling it yet. That will be next if the issue comes back after the driver update.

Ok, so I uninstalled the Intelligent Touchpad 2.0 software because I have no idea what it does and still have not noticed a difference other than the 4-finger lock screen thing that does nothing. Anyone know exactly what the software does? In other news, updated ELAN driver to version 11.4.7.1. Will report back if the touchpad goes crazy but seems good so far.
Edit: It just went crazy, sleep and back on and back to normal. This might get irritating after a while
Edit2: I'm playing around with the ELAN settings, disabling features one at a time to see if it helps. So far, I'm messing with the multi-finger stuff, disabled the two finger clicking, rotating, and four finger swipe. Seems the issue comes after clicking the touchpad because the only time it goes crazy is after I right click to get the pop-up menu. I do the tapping instead of left clicking so that is probably why I don't run into the issue as much as some of the other guys.
Edit3: The touchpad got worse and worse throughout the day as I started updating drivers. I ended up removing the drivers completely similar to what LPDAL did but then I got to have the gestures so I ended up reinstalling the drivers from the D drive. Guess I'll have to wait and see for a fix. But for now the drivers from the Lenovo drive (11.4.5.1) is the best out there.
Update 4 24DEC12: I've re-positioned a few tape behind the touchpad on December 22 and the touchpad seems to be working much better. I'll report back if the touchpad has another episode but two days without incident is pretty good and I've been using it heavily playing Far Cry 3 and F1 2010 non-stop as well as surfing the forums in between. So here's what I did. In this picture, you can seen the yellow colored clear tape covering the connector for the touchpad. The ribbon has a blue tab that is supposed to help you guild the ribbon into the connector. As pictured, the blue tab is sticking out from the tape and I was thinking it might be making contact and rubbing against the motherboard when assembled. So, I moved the tape to hold down the blue tab so that it lays flat against the touchpad. The second thing was I moved the silver fabric like tape so that it covered the rest of the copper colored portion of the touchpad like it was intended to do. The purpose is to remove any potential interference that might be causing the touchpad to become uncontrollable. I also stared at it for about an hour so maybe that willed it to fix itself?
Update 5 29DEC12: No further issues. I think moving the tape around solved the issue. -

First, I went into Device Manager and right clicked the Lenovo pointing device:
I clicked uninstall, and made sure to check the box that said "Delete driver":
The system then restarted and I got a message similar to this (sorry for the abysmal quality, I couldn't find any other pic of it on the web):
I then logged in and the touchpad functioned normally, at least for my Y500. -
I did the EXACT same procedure, on 2 different y500s and it DID NOT work for either of them. So I do not think this is going to work for most as already it has only worked 1/3 of the time.
Both mine are going back to lenovo for a refund. They should not have released the y500 with such a glaring problem. -

Is this issue still yet unresolved? I need to decide between this computer or the m17x from alienware :?
-
oh, this is not the synaptics touchpad ??
heh, maybe that's why it sucks -
unfortunately my y500 has the same problem too.I reinstalled driver but still got this issue.has any one solve this problem yet?
-
Drivers | Synaptics
it worked for me. please report back and see how it works for you -
thank you but it still going crazy.I am pissed off since yesterday dont know what to do.By the way how did you uninstall the driver?
-
-
When you use your external mouse, can you use your mouse normally?
In brief,is this problem still exist although you use an external mouse? -
has anyone tried this touchpad on win7?

I decided to buy y580 but I think y500 is more solid and its hardwares(except gpu without sli gt650m) are better than y580.And also there is a ultrabay. Now I have decided to buy y500 but I'm really confused because of this touchpad problem. -
Ive extensively checked the posts and cannot find a working method to fixing the touchpad. Ive only had the Y500 a little over a day now and the problem was there from the start. Ive tried uninstalling the drivers (no luck), tried the updated drivers that somebody posted (no luck), tried the synaptics drivers (also no luck). It appears i have no other option but return the laptop to lenovo for a refund as its clearly a issue that they didnt fix. Has anyone managed to fix it finally?
-
I dont believe that its for hardware problem on the other hand lenovo`s silence is making me worried
-
-
I was planning on ordering one, but I definitely won't until this has been resolved.

I called lenovo this morning... they havent heard of the issue. By opening it, you surely voided the warranty so that probably isnt the best step. Im personally returning the machine, its a shame as up until this problem i was pretty impressed by it. Never mind. -

First off I didn't read the entire thread but want to post my 2 cents.
My trackpad becomes unusable after about 30 minutes or less of use.
I have tried a full powercycle, uninstalling the driver, reinstalling the driver numerous times to no avail.
The trackpad issues even happened in the recovery boot so it looks like a hardware issue and not a software issue in windows.
Also posts about this seem to be in the last few weeks mostly so I assume that they got a bad batch of trackpads.
I am going to send my unit back and get a new one. -
Update 5 29DEC12: No further issues. I think moving the tape around solved the issue.
Read first post on page 3 for my entire log on this issue. -

Edit: Have not come back since that one incident. I think it might have to do with the keyboard more than the mouse. I had this issue with the numpad after the last time I disassembled the laptop to apply AS5. The numpad would add extra characters or numbers when I hit it so if I hit the number 6, it would throw out something like `6 as an example. I've since taken the keyboard out and I think if you tighten the screws to the keyboard too tight, it will do that which makes me believe that the ribbons themselves are to blame as maybe if they are bent too tightly they cause interference. If you take it apart, you'll know what I'm talking about. But yeah, touchpad still good to go. I think I can finally enjoy this laptop. It is a beautiful machine for sure. Just wished it came good to go out of the box.

Here's me watching UFC 155 on a C130 from Spain to Germany... Awesome battery life, way above what Lenovo advertises.

Hi, I ordered the Ideapad Y500 on 11/25/2012 and just now received the actual laptop from UPS on 12/31/2012. I've read about the touchpad issues so I'm gonna document my actual experiences just in case it happens to me or to let others know if my touchpad is working exactly the way it should. So far I have not seen anything wrong with my touchpad. I turned on the laptop for the very first time at 6:00 pm central time on 12/31/2012. I have not installed or uninstalled any programs. I have not configured wifi or even connected to any internet source. I also have not configured any software settings. Everything is EXACTLY how the laptop came out of the box. I want to make sure that there are minimal variables that could attribute to any touchpad malfunctions. Let me start by listing my laptop specs:
i7-3632QM Processor( 2.20GHz 1600MHz ), Windows 8 64, NVIDIA GeForce GT650M 2GB Sli (2x), 16GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz, 15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge 1920x1080, 1TB 5400RPM+16GB SSD. I have been tapping the touchpad and clicking the buttons without any errors so far. I haven't tried multi-touch yet. Just taking baby steps. I have a suspicion that Lenovo updated my particular touchpad, including the drivers due to all the talks on the forums about the touchpad not working. I have even plugged in a usb mouse and used it with no problems at all. Let me list my touchpad properties before I do more testing:
My laptop shows Lenovo Pointing Device Manufactured by Synaptics with Driver Version 16.2.18.0. Also, my Laptop was manufactured on 12/23/2012. It's one of the newer batches so I'm hoping I won't experience any malfunctions. I will constantly keep everyone updated on my progress. -
Well I just got mine and it seems to be manufacture on the 23rd and the touchpad has been working great so far; however, I don't see the intel HD4000 installed. Here are some screenshots:
