I visited the City of Industry Fry's today. When I asked about the Y510 with Blu ray, the salesperson said he thought they had it in stock. (I would be surprised if they did. Professor, did ANY store ever have it in stock yet?) We looked at over twenty stores and all had zero inventory. The salesperson was surprised at this. He then tried to steer me towards buying a MSI computer with Blu ray and then offered to reduce the price on the Y510 they had in-stock. I told him I wanted the Blu ray and dual graphic cards. He took my request to the head of the computer department and they printed out a finalized quote on the computer. He said that in the morning he was going to call Fry's distributor and make sure that as soon as the computers are released to the stores, one would be sent to me at my store to pick up. He said, "You'll be the first one to receive one as soon as they are in Fry's inventory. And I'll find out when that will be."
He has my contact information, so the ball is in his court now.

Lenovo's educator's price is $1,249.00 with dual graphic cards and no Blu ray drive.
(I'd go that route, BUT, there's no way to order a Blu ray ultra bay or even a DVD ultrabay. I get clocked with CA sales tax either way I go.) -

So how about us 650m folks looking for an upgrade? Will it be possible to buy a 650m for 650m sli models? I really hope I can grab one and swap it out with my DVD drive... they better not discontinue those. I can't find one anywhere.

So I am looking at buying a decent gaming laptop for college. I would like to keep it under $900. I was looking at the y500/400 and the Asus g46vw, and had all but decided on the Lenovo until I read this thread. Thing is, I want to be sure I have good customer service, incase my laptop has issues. I don't care about the 750m, and plan on sticking to the single graphics card. Some of the posts here have seemed to indicate however that a dvd player is not standard in these units. Is that the case? All I want is a decent gaming laptop with dvd playback that is less than $900. I had chosen the y-series because of the possiblity of going 1080p (the g46vw is only 1366 x 768) with the y500 and the i7. After this forum though, now I am wondering though if the asus is a better choice. What do you think?

The people in this thread are disgruntled because we've been promised ultrabays (graphic card or DVD burner) and they're nowhere to be found. And there is no expected ship date on those items. We've ordered them, but those orders have been cancelled. And now they cannot even be ordered.
If you're sure that you won't need to upgrade your computer via ultrabay, then you're good to go.
(Currently, I'm using a USB portable DVD burner for my needs.) -
Doesn't this speak to their customer service though? Or just their support of promised features?
Also, is the 510 a significant improvement over the 500? I like the 16gb SSD in the $870 500 model, and I don't like that the reduced screen resolution in the $830 510. Would it be worth it though for the haswell? Resolution isn't a deal-breaker for me.
And what of the 580, does it really have a bluray drive? or is that false advertising? -
It has been stated on this forum that Lenovo may have trouble keeping up with the demand of producing optional ultrabays because it is selling so many full-featured computers that it can't keep up with the demand and there aren't any ultrabays to spare. Or Lenovo would rather use its resources selling full computers to customers over selling parts of computers to existing customers. (I guess we'll see if that is true as time goes on.)
The Y510 is different in a couple respects than the Y500. Read the thread on this forum that compares the two. I wouldn't call it significant for me, but it may be for you. And that includes your question about the Haswell chip.
The Y580 is a discontinued model. In the past, you could get several different models with Blu ray drives included. Supposedly, this model from Fry's has a Blu ray drive:

The Y500 and Y510 are very nice "bang for the buck" computers. Often times there are trade-offs you have to make when you are getting a full-featured computer at a good price. At the moment, those promised features are the trade-off. -

I have two salespeople from two different Fry's stores who are supposed to call me when their shipments arrive. No word from either. -
EDIT*- so I called their customer service number and they said they are expecting a shipment of the 16gb sli/blu ray bundle (supposedly) on July 3, so about 2 weeks from now. I guess ill wait till them. They said it should ship the same day they receive it so. -

Yes, I've been following Y500 and Y510 threads. Seems the Lenovo technology is changing faster than the website master can keep up with it.
My situation: I've never returned my Y500. I sent an e-mail explaining that I bought the Y500 with the understanding I could also buy a DVD ultrabay. (They are on the same order/receipt as a matter of fact.) I requested a RMA, but never heard back from my Lenovo "specialist."
I have a very large number of games on discs, so I just bought a portable DVD player to load them into my Y500. It's working out fine, so I may skip the ultrabay altogether. I may push for the return/refund when/if the Y510 with dual graphic cards and Blu ray shows up and I hear how it performs.
I didn't put down any money for the Fry's order and I'll check back in with them in July to see what they say. If I hear anything sooner from them, I'll let you know. -

So here we are, 2 and a half weeks out until lenovo supposedly is releasing their ultra bay line up. I for one am kind if sick to my stomach about the fiasco on the haswell possessor change. It seems that only the dual graphics y510p is running the 4702mq possessor, probably because they realized that its running to much heat with the new possessor and dual graphics. I'm just wondering how this is going to affect 3rd party retailers. Fry's still has it listed with a 4700mq possessor. The other alternative for me would be MSI GT60 2OD-024US, its $1699 but a lot more at what your getting. Was looking at either getting it at gentechpc.com or xopticpc.com, gentech is a little cheaper and I hear there customer service is a lot better. Also they are active here on the forms.

With Lenovo's track record about having enough ultrabays produced to meet the demand, I'm pessimistic that the Fry's unit will reach the shelves.
That MSI is nice, but too rich for my blood. -
Check out my post (from the y400 thread). Apparently they have Nvidia 750m in stock.

None of the three are available within 100 miles of Los Angeles.
I think you made the right choice in looking elsewhere for your laptop, especially if you're expecting Lenovo to up its production of ultrabays available for consumers to buy. -
did these ever become available?
