    Hi Guys,

    I have a lenovo y510p. Recently I brought an Samsung EVO 850 500GB SSD.

I am planning to a clean install of windows 8.1 on the new SSD. Will keep the old HDD as backup.

Since this is the first time I am installing and SSD, I do have some questions.

    1. Do I need to do anything with SSD before plugging it into laptop? Any setup or formatting?
    2. I have windows ISO image burned on a bootable USB stick. How do I boot from it? I am unable to go into the BIOS, F2 and F12 doesn't work.

    Appreciate if someone can help.

    Thanks
    Hali

    1. No you dont have to do anything to the ssd. Just install it in your laptop and install windows on that drive
    2. Is the USB formatted for UEFI boot? Try pressing the fn key while pressing the hotkeys

    Thanks bigmac999.

I found that in order to enter BIOS in y510p one need to press NOVO button next to Power input section.

I am not sure if the USB is formatted to UEFI boot. I found below link and will be taking the option one to create it.

I have also copied all the latest driver from Lenovo website on another USB drive so that in case need, it will come handy.
I have also extracted the windows key for the same but I believe it will not be needed since windows installation can take the OEM key from BIOS.
I will also put the HDD in an caddy in place of DVD drive.

I believe that about cover most of the part.

Anything else that I might need to do before hand?

Thanks again for your valuable time.

    Regards
    Hali

Just to update on current status.

I have successfully install Windows 8.1 on SSD. The installation was very smooth.
My boot time is reduced from 2 to 3 minute to less than 10 sec :)

The only drivers that I have installed from Lenovo are as follows:

    Intel Chipset Driver
    Intel Management Engine Interface
    Lenovo Energy Management
    Realtek Audio Driver

All other drivers are from Windows itself.
