So i found this on reddit, which apparently is a small trick you can use to get SLI *and* optimus on your Y510P laptop:
You can use optimus. Go to your D drive, click on drivers ---> VGA ---> Install Intel Drivers now.
Now, after restarting, go to D drive, click on drivers ---> VGA ---> Install Nvidia drivers.
Now, go to Nvidia Control Panel ----> Manage 3-d settings ---> preferred graphics processor
By D drive, he means the LENOVO partition but you could also just download the drivers off intel/nvidia.
So, can a Y510P owner test this and confirm it? If this works, this could do wonders for the battery life, which is the main downside of this laptop
Also, if this does work, why would Lenovo purposely disable optimus? To encourage sales of other models?

anyone tried this yet? im curious to know if it would also work on the Y500
-
I would try it, if i had a Y510P SLI....
Anyways, bump.
@DjSweet
Doesnt work on the Y500 since the Intel 4000 HD is physically disabled. -
its such a shame.. thanks anyways

Can anyone confirm any difference in battery life when using Optimus iGPU compared to 750M?
One forum suggested that the Y510p has about 30 minutes of battery power more when compared to a similar Y500.. 2.5hr vs 3 hr. which is still pretty horrendous, but understandable because of the components used in the system.
However, if the Y510p can last 4 hours while typing + surfing, I am going to buy it.
Please! Someone speak about the battery of the Y510p -
The intel CPU-GPU combo (4700MQ+HD4600) has a TDP of 46W.
A single 750M has a TDP of 38W + 46W from CPU
Dual 750M's have a 74W TDP. + 46W from CPU
This alone explains how battery life is impacted.
You can get 4 hours+ with only Intel GPU and power saver mode, which can shut off cores and underclocks to 1.6ghz. Also, screen brightness is a factor, so is load and peripherals.
Anyways, still waiting for a tester... -
Just gave it a shot... Doesn't work, when going to install the VGA drivers I receive a notification telling me the computer does not support the required hardware.

Thanks.

It will work if you use the driver from Intel's site. FIRST you have to remove the second video card from the Ultrabay, then install the driver. I have done this when I had the Y510p. I have the proper driver in my dropbox if you need it. I was able to use Optimus via the Nvidia control panel without a hitch and it increased my battery life quite a bit as well.

Oh, thanks
-
I was not able to get this to work when both GPU's are installed, following the exact instructions here and Optimus does work until I power down and re-install the 2nd 750M. Does Optimus just not function with SLI?
-
Doesnt work. Thread closed.
-
It only worked for me when I had one video card installed. Upon adding the second card there was no longer an option for integrated graphics.

At least there should be a way of getting GPU switching, i mean, we can do it on linux, why not windows :/

By mistake >_<
