Hello everyone. My name is William and I live in TX. I just ordered a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Laptop Computer - 59405668. It comes in tomorrow and I am stuck on a fence at the moment. The main reasons I will be using this laptop is to play dayz, sof2, OBS, vegas 12 pro, and browsing web. Now, I have never used windows 8 and have not heard the greatest on it, so i was going to install windows 7 64 on it. Also, SOF2 game I play, was made in 2000 and I dont think anyone has had success playing it on windows 8, I play it currently on windows 7. What are your thoughts on this?

If I read correctly, this is how I would do this:

    Power down laptop
Press the button on the side, go to the BIOS and turn off secure boot and set UEFI mode to legacy
    Power off laptop
Press side button again and open the boot menu
    Boot off windows 7 disc
Install windows 7 drivers and latest intel and nvida drivers
    Configure caching SSD
Open Disk Management and erase the partition on the SSD, leaving free space
Download and install expresscache software for windows 7 – thinkCentre, thinkpad,

These are the steps I have read. Two questions:
After booting from windows 7 disc, I just startup windows like normal then google the drivers to download and install?
Is it a good idea to erase the partition, I think that means windows 8.1, off the SSD? Even though I have a terabyte hard drive?

Well I feel like a noob. I didn't know that I could only install my windows disc on one PC. I don't want to spend another $80 on a product key to put windows 7 on it so I might keep windows 8. Thoughts?

In my opinion, Windows 8 is superior to Windows 7. Not only is it faster, with more features and better security but the start button can be easily replaced. While there are some obscure or advanced features that differ between the two operating systems, I feel like Windows 8 has given me the better user experience.

Oh and regarding the game you want to play: I personally have not ever tried that specific game, but every game I've tried to run on Windows 8 has worked without issue. That includes relatively old titles like Morrowind and Arx Fatalis (both 2002).

Thank you for your reply. The only thing I am worried about is my PC game I still play with my buddies that was made in 2000. I don't know if it will work with windows 8. I'll just load that up first and see I guess. But I have heard a lot if mixed reviews on 8.

I updated my response to address that point. I doubt you'll have any problems playing your game, as any game that works with Windows 7 seems to work with Windows 8. So unless that specific game doesn't work with Windows 8 for whatever reason, you should be fine.

Windows 8 is definitely faster and smoother than 7 but it takes some getting used to. There are various guides available for tweaking Windows 8 to act like Windows 7 just google it.
