Can someone that owns the Y510p please open it up and measure to see if a 60mm NGFF card will fit in the 42mm slot?
The higher capacity NGFF cards are just longer, so if there's sufficient room past the screw, Y510p owners can probably install 64GB-128GB SSDs in the NGFF slot.

So... there's definitely room for a 62mm NGFF card in there if you want to take the GPU heatsink out and modify it.
    :p

Where do you even buy NGFF SSDs? I want to upgrade too but it doesn't seem like they're available to consumers yet.

Wait a year for them to become industry standard.

That's what they said about BTX cases and RDRam. It's foolish for Lenovo to put in a slot that MIGHT be a standard a year from now all the while ignoring the popular mSata.

There is no extra space for anything bigger/longer. It has to be 42mm.

The decision to go with M.2 instead of mSATA is the single biggest mistake Lenovo made with this machine. What were they thinking? There are no benefits in this case, only drawbacks.

Wow...that really disappoints me. I think I just may return my y510p as well...there is too many negatives. Clickpad sucks but I live with it...I wanted to put in an SSD and use the 1TB for storage...but I guess I can't do that now if I'll be limited to such a small capacity NGFF due to the lack of available space. Is there really no other alternative other than getting rid of the 1TB and putting the SSD there. I really wanted to do the mSATA but I can't believe they ousted it for a form-factor that hasn't even solidified itself yet.... What do you guys think? Keep the y510p or just get the original y500?

You can either go for Y500. Or give up sli or optical drive and use ultrabay for second HDD.
