    Hello all --

I have an Ideapad Y550 that I inherited from my folks. My T43 finally gave up the ghost for good, and since they weren't using this computer, I am until I get a new thinkpad. It's a so-so laptop -- big screen, and awesome speakers, but the monitor hinge sucks, resolution is poor, and vertical viewing angles are awful. The big problem with it though, is that it was dropped, obliterating the only two USB ports. I've removed that little USB board in hopes of one day finding a replacement, but so far I haven't. Another side-effect (maybe from the drop) is that the CMOS battery seems to either be dislodged or dead. The machine loses all BIOS settings pretty frequently, which isn't the end of the world, but it means I have to fix the clock fairly often, and the post sound (annoying . . . you can disable in BIOS) is pretty much unavoidable. It's not a show-stopper -- the computer still works okay, but it's just an annoyance.

I've torn this thing mostly apart and had no luck finding the CMOS battery. I haven't been able to find any manuals or any other documentation that explains where it is. I read through manuals for similar units, but they didn't really help. If I can just find the darned thing I'd replace it, but I have no idea where it is or how to get to it. I didn't remove the entire motherboard, and perhaps it's on the underside of it, but I didn't want to go to the trouble if I didn't have to. Does anyone have an idea as to where the CMOS battery is on the Y550?

Thanks for the reply -- the Y560 manual mentioned in the link is what I used to try and find my CMOS battery. It was really helpful in showing me the right way to disassemble the Y550, but unfortunately the manual doesn't seem to reference the CMOS battery, so I was stuck just looking around for it. I probably should go ahead and disassemble the machine fully to find it -- I just didn't want to go through the hassle of it if I didn't have to.
