Lenovo.com is now listing preconfigured Y550s with the new Core i7. No configureable models as of yet.
Interestingly enough, NewEgg dropped the price on the model they have to $999. ( here)
I suspect though that the "Lenovo IdeaPad Y550P - 324164U" Lenovo listshave which has a "Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor ( 2.80GHz 1333MHz 6MB ) " Is actually the 1.6Ghz model which TurboBoosts to 1.6Ghz...

I nhave been looking at the one from Newegg also but that model is listed as a lenovo IdeaPad Y550 (324156U) and only has the stated 1.6 i7720QM.
I am just awaiting some money that will be in my account soon to get this but then I saw the Y550P models on lenovo's site and like you mention they are listed at 2.8gh 1333fsb and 3.0ghz 1333 fsb and with the 15% off UPSHOLIDAY code it's cheaper and better looking then the one on newegg.
What doesn't make sense is the model descriptions and #.
The one on newegg isn't a y550(P) so does that mean the lenovo y550P is a 2.8ghz stock?
Also the model #'s differ:
Newegg: lenovo IdeaPad Y550 (324156U)
Lenovo: Lenovo IdeaPad Y550p - 324164U
So what is the main difference?
Note: also note the one on newegg has a 500gig hardrive which the lenovo one doesn't unless you get the 3.9 i7.
I want this laptop soooooo badly, I have been going between the y550 and I guess the y550p now, and the sony cw series. -
I want this notebook so badly, but that resolution is killing it for me.
-
what do you mean the resolution is killing you?
it's hd? or at least it says it is on lenovo's site. -
The one at Newegg is much better in terms of processing power. The i7-720QM is running it's 4 cores at 1.6GHz, when the computer doesn't use all 4 cores it shuts down the 2 and overclocks the other 2 to 2.8GHz.
The only advantage of the P-T series processors over the i7M is that they consume less power. P->25W T->45W i7M->55W? -

I would have preferred a 1600X900 display as well, and I was actually looking at a Dell Studio XPS1645, but it would have cost significantly more money to get an i7 studio compared to the Lenovo.
I got the model that's on newegg.
*EDIT* if anyone cares, WEI scores are as follows:
CPU: 6.9
RAM: 7.3
AERO GRAPHICS: 6.4
GAMING GRAPHICS: 6.4
HDD: 5.5 -
How's the battery life?
-
I haven't tested the battery life in real time, but Windows is currently claiming 3 hours and 10 minutes (97% charge) at 90% brightness (really bright) with BT and wifi on. That's in power saver mode. Of course, this is just light web browsing and not gaming/watching videos. All in all, i'm pretty satisfied with the battery, it's about on par with my old Asus G1s which had a C2D and 8600M GT. I didn't buy this computer looking for miraculous battery life though.
*EDIT* Battery now reads 93%, and 3hours 8minutes remaining. Hmm. -
New to the forum...I just wanted to see if anyone has thought about upgrading the display on the y550p? I will be picking one of these up soon and thought maybe someone could steer me in the direction of the correct model number for an LCD with a higher res than the factory one...I am thinking 1600x900 should suffice...also I am coming from a P-6860FX gateway laptop, how will this one compare? The reason I am replacing the gateway is really for reasons of size and weight...I wanted a 15" display...I was considering the G51VX from Asus, but the fit and finish is "seemingly" better on this Lenovo from the pictures...any thoughts on my questions? Thanks in advance for anyones replies

Hows the build quality?
Any flex anywhere?
Heat and Noise?
Thanks! -
ZT3000! is the laptop fast in your opinion?
have you tested any games?
does it get hot when gaming?
and last but not least, why did you choose the newegg option and not the lenovo? appearently the one on lenovo has a better wireless card and it also states it has an hd screen. Newegg doesn't specify these things. -
Where to get this in UK or DE? Does anyone knows?
-
It is fast, probably one of the fasted computers you can buy for the price.
The exhaust certainly throws out some heat when gaming, but the cooling system seems to do its job quite well. The bottom doesn't get blistering hot like my old Asus and the GT240M doesn't run anywhere near as hot as my old 8600M GT, but you certainly want to keep it on a solid surface when doing demanding tasks (gaming); this is true with all reasonably high powered laptops though. I haven't experiences any slow downs while gaming, but the power supply does get scary-hot, which makes me think that it might be being taxed to its limit (I believe it's a 90watt, which looks to be the absolute minimum needed for an i7 lappy). I haven't done too much gaming, I'm waiting for my cooler to come in.
The newegg one was $999US, which seemed like a good deal to me since it has a 500GB HD. It has an Intel 5300 wifi adapter and bluetooth. The lid does have flex, as you can see here:

All in all, i'm pretty satisfied now that I've got used to the 1366X768 screen. I still miss my Asus's old 1680X1050 screen though, it was beautiful. I bought my Asus G1s in the summer of 2007, it was nearly $1800. Now I have a computer that is superior in almost every way for a grand. That's technology for you though. -
Are you aware of anyone that has done a review on one of these yet? To get 3Mark scores and such? Also with some overclocking just to see how far the GPU can go? I am most likely going to purchase this particular laptop, but I fear I might be taking a huge step backwards from my P-6860FX which has an x7800 and an 8800M GTS...but I really need something that is smaller and I do want to adopt the latest technology i7 chipset...plus the price can't be beat!

I want the lenovo y550p really badly but after seeing this I'm not sure what to do.
If i could get one with a touchscreen that would be sweet just to have lol.
Unless it will shoot the price up like no other.
thanks to the person who put a bit of review in this thread of the y550p, makes me want it even more.
One more question, is the top of it flimsy? -
ZT3000!
Can you hear noise or hiss in the headphone or the speaker? I have the same model as you do. -
I ran the free version of 3DMark06 at 1280X768 (close to the screens native resolution and the only resolution available on the free 3DMark).
-
Thanks for your reply ZT3000!

one more question do you see diagonal lines in the screen when there is motion?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5536302 -
The only thing I see funky is that when I drag windows around their boards seem to get jagged while the window is moving. It's very slight, I just now noticed it after looking at that Sony thread. Never noticed any diagonal lines while gaming or watching videos so in my opinion it's a non-issue for me.
*EDIT* I'm downloading some more 720p content right now. I'll watch them and see if anything looks out of place.
*EDIT* 2: I can really find no complaints with HD content, there is perhaps the slightest of motion blur, but it's not bad by any means. I downloaded some WMVHD content here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx -
zt3000! thanks for all this info, makes me want it more! So how long did it take for newegg to get it there to you?
what kind of cooler did you get? jw -
Oh could you pleasse post temperatures for CPU and GPU at idle and load anybody? Thanks
