This morning I loaded Battlefield and my computer froze on a blank screen. This has happened a couple times before before, usually if I join a server just as a new map/game is starting, and is quickly remedied by exiting the game and reloading. Except this time the usual alt+tab or ctrl+alt+delete were not responding.

Upon restarting the screen was completely black with no back lighting. A quick Google search revealed that others had experienced this problem (hence thread name) but not much more information. I was able to use the computer normally via HDMI out to a television, so that was promising. I tried the usual troubleshooting even though all signs pointed to a hardware issue: malware scan, system restore, checking display settings, etc. Finally I performed a clean install of the stock Nvidia drivers. Nothing - at this point I was convinced a display cable was loose and called Lenovo.

Well, I spoke to a nice man who recorded some personal information to start a warranty claim, then asked me to perform some more basic troubleshooting. He told me to remove peripherals, battery, and AC power and wait a minute or two, then discharge the battery for 15 seconds. At this point my eyes rolled back into my skull because I had already done exactly this (granted, not for the length he instructed) with no results, and this never seems to solve any issues beyond what happens when my grandmother uses a computer. Of course, when I replace the battery and power up the screen is working fine just as before. I felt pretty dumb.

    Any idea what happened?

Same issue again today, no chance of bringing it back to life. Turns out I can faintly see images on the screen under bright light, which leads me to believe that the backlight is not functional. RMA.

Did you send it out for repairs or return it altogether? What are you going to get instead?

Just sent back to be repaired. Up until the problem occurred, I was very happy with it.

Sent my Y580 in on Saturday 25th, arrived on 28th, received email tonight that it has been fixed and is on it's way back. So as god awful as the phone support from India was (Philippines call center much better), I'm very impressed with the actual repair facility in Grapevine, TX. Will be very happy to get my Y580 back.

Of all the computers, phones, tablets, or other electronics I've owned, I don't think I've ever had a single failure or defect. So, my opinion is that it was bound to happen to me eventually and I just got unlucky with the y580. I'm guessing this isn't a big deal. I was very pleased with the computer before this failure, and expect I will be when I get it back.

If not, I've got the three year warranty with 2 day shipping for repairs, haha.

    seems like a minor problem.

at least your graphics card and mobo were fine.

if it were me, i would have disassembled the laptop to see if there were in fact a loose lcd cable.

    I HATE rma'ing stuff.

Agreed. I've been buying laptops since '97, on the average about 1 every 1.5 years or so and this is the first time I've ever had to to RMA a laptop.
