Hey probably thinks the below is superior in build quality:

You know, normal everyday notebooks that any business executive would use ;). More seriously, I wouldn't group thinkpads in the same category as MBPs in terms of build quality if one uses durability and ability to withstand accidental drops and spills as their metric.

Well I'm interning at Ford engineering and that's what all the engineers use :p They all just walk around with toughbooks, kind of funny.

It sounds like I'm going to need a nice backpack with a padded laptop compartment if I'm going to be carrying this around a college campus a lot, right? Good thing I have one at least, wish it was a little more durable though.

Well, the Toughbooks were also developed for field use in warzones. If the plant is in downtown Detroit, then I can see why they chose them, ;).

You'll need a padded backpack to carry any laptop sold to general consumers these days, including the MBP.

Heyyyy... it's actually a wonderful place though that just gets a bad rep, being around it as it revives is pretty cool (the Ford research center is actually in Dearborn though).

Just wondering though, what laptops wouldn't be considered consumer laptops? Would that be like ThinkPads?

The macbooks are in fact ""above average" In terms compared to the average notebook but they are Notorious for denting google it for yourself it's far from a hard to find issue. Thinkpads are definitely an excellent build quality also but we are in the IDEAPAD forum which is a BUDGET laptop class with a Low-Below average build quality. Compared to other budget builds The ideapads seem to be better built but compared to any higher class laptop and you can feel the cheapness right away.

P.S the Laptop in question in the original thread the y580 does not have a stellar build quality rep by any means checkout the Lenovo forums for that model it's flooded with build quality complaints many due to Hinges or bezel cracking. It like many of the idea series laptops aren't a bad machine they just aren't one that is going to withstand tons of travel and moving around. I move my B series from my bedroom to my living room but outside of that i would not feel overly comfortable moving it around a ton. For excessive movement like that i invested in Dell Latitudes or for the equivalent in this case you should consider a think pad.
