I have a Lenovo Y580 with the following specs:

    windows 7 home premium SP1

64GB Samsung M-SATA SSD (Set up as a cache drive I believe)

    750GB Sandisk HDD

After 2yrs of stable performance my laptop did not boot properly and the Windows system recovery options initiated. I choose English as my language and then I choose the first option "Startup Repair".

Now the computer no longer boots to windows and I get the following error message:

    Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 083)

    Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Atheros PCIE Ethernet Controller v2.1.1.1(12/23/11)

    Check cable connection!

    PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

    Troubleshooting I performed:

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting both drives but that didn’t fix the problem.

I hit F2 and entered the Bios and both hard drives and the optical drive are recognized and the boot order is correct.

I put the 750MB HD in an USB enclosure and attached it to another computer and I could open the drive. But the drive only showed as 24.4 GB and there are only two visible file folders on the drive "Applications" and "Drivers" that I could open.

When I put the 64 GB Msata into an USB enclosure and plugged it into another computer I could not open it and got a message that the drive needed to be formatted.

I can get into One Key Recovery if I push the button at startup. But I don't want to perform a factory restore and reformat my HDD before I copy some files. Plus, I'm assuming it won't work if I have a Hardware Issue (broken Msata drive).

    Question I have:

    (1) Does the MSATA Caching utilize hidden partitions (or some sort of file indexing) on my 750GB hard drive? Is that why the files are not visible when I plug the 750 HDD into a computer using a USB enclosure? How do I see the files on my 750 GB HDD so I can copy the files to another drive?

    (2) Has anyone fixed their laptop after getting this error message? Do you think I have a hardware or software issue?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I get this problem every once in a while. I've narrowed the culprit down to either
    A. One of the three small cables (excluding the DC connection one, it's red and black) located directly on the bottom of the laptop; assuming of course the cover is removed
    B. BIOS setting, if you're using svl7's modded bios or similar, and you did some poking, it could be that something is interfering with the discovery of the SATA/IDE connections. I remember on several occasions when I got this error, that I turned it off, took battery out and pushed power a couple times, wiggled the three said cables, and gave the keyboard a few hard taps, went into bios and loaded defaults, and boom, it booted to OS.
    C. Damaged/faulty mobo
