Thought this would be a good time to start an owners thread for the Y580 crowd.
A bit early on my part since I won't have mine until Monday or Tuesday, but I'll replace this post with my review a day or two after I get it.
This is a good place for owners to share their thoughts on the 580 and for everyone else to ask any questions they have.
-
I just posted a short written and video review of the Y580 here:
http://www.laptopreviews.com/lenovo-ideapad-y580-first-thoughts-review-2012-06
http://youtu.be/-OZcJnOQsSo -
If someone could put up a guide on how to install our own SSD on this laptop and install a fresh copy of Windows on that, that would be great.
Personally, this laptop probably won't even be delivered to me for a few weeks yet
-
Fantastic review. If you could run a few games (like Diablo 3) with so we can see how they run on this laptop that'd be great. Looking forward to your full written review.Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015

Thanks Andrew.
I was really interested in seeing the 768p screen. Doesn't look as terrible as everyone was assuming it was going to be.
The more I see the 580, the more I'm liking it. Waiting until Monday night is going to be tough.
It's great that there will be a professional review soon. -
I just posted some written first thoughts for the Y580 and some pictures here:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 First Thoughts Review
It's only been like 18 hours since I got this thing so obviously need more time to write a more comprehensive review that covers all aspects. -
Thanks a lot an actual review in English would be very nice because i'm trying to find a gaming laptop for under 1000$
-
Great to hear that someone has this baby and is willing to share impressions. Thx.
I would like to see more benchmarks but not from 3DMarks (i lost track of what those points means so long ago...). Like Heaven benchmark or some more demanding games.
But more importantly - some cons - I need to choose between Y580 and N56VZ - first has better graphic card and second has matte display (I hate glare). -
Well, if you hate glare the Y580 has that, but a lot of consumers like glossy due to the more vivid color it has. The glossy bezel is reflective and picks up fingerprints and reflects along with the screen. Not showstoppers, but obviously something to keep in mind.
-
Looking forward to your upcoming y580 review. I hope it will be as in-depth as your dv6 ivy bridge review, which I enjoyed, particularly on the unit's build quality and thermal profile.
-
Yeah, I know how glossy works because my wife has screen like that. And since this notebook will be for her then this is not as big factor as would be for me.
Anyway thanks for answer.
-
Seems a little strange that the DV6T would score that much higher than the 580 in 3D mark vantage.
Most likely a driver issue, but that is a bit worrying. -
Yeah. 9300 is a terrible score for the 660M.
-
According to everything I've seen online, that number should be somewhere between 11,400 and 12,000.
I hope the lenovo 660 hasn't been clocked down in some way.
Will need to run 3Dmark Vantage with a clean windows install and see what happens. -
Andrew - what NVIDIA driver version is your Y580 using?
-
Thx I was tossing up between the Y580 & the dv6 7000 series with the GT 650, I'm guessing the HP will be more expensive, but I'm thinking you get what you paid for with the Lenovo.
-
So far I'm really loving my y580. I have the configuration with the 1080p screen and only the 1tb 5400 disk.
The good: The laptop itself is very good looking and not in a particularly flashy way. The brushed grey aluminum is very classy and repels fingerprints. The laptop itself seems to perform as well as it should (which I consider to be more than adequate for a 4 year college laptop). The keyboard, as far as laptop keyboards go, is amazing. It has very little flex and the tactile response is very enjoyable. The screen on my version (the 1080p LED) is gorgeous. The colors are all vibrant and the screen itself is bright, while maintaining excellent viewing angles. The cooling system has also been doing a magnificent job so far. I haven't run any games but during regular computing on battery (which is also excellent btw-4 hours on balanced) the exhaust was near cold and the laptop felt less than room temp.
The not so good: The trackpad has a little travel to it before it makes the click. This is minor and slightly annoying but not a deal breaker (as I'm going to be using a mouse for any really important application). The build quality is good, but not exactly thinkpad caliber (it remains a very useable and still above average laptop in terms of build quality).
So far thats it from me. I haven't tried playing any games, but I'm not the best benchmark in terms of game performance, as I mostly play CS Source and Dota. 3dmark scores to come... -
YES PLEASE a SSD self instillation and Windows reinstall guide for the y580 is exactly what I have been searching for!!!
And mine also won't even be shipped for at least a week! D: -
Finally a first hand review. How is the FHD screen of Y580 compared to FHD screen of DV6 ivy? Will probably purchase it at their website already once I finalize my decision.
-
That's the thing. With the coupon codes that HP regularly offers, the 580 is more expensive than the dv6t.
I really hope that 9300 score is some kind of fluke or due to some other issues
-
I am also after the coupon. The DV6 with coupon is $100 cheaper than the Y580 so it's a toss up between the two. Just need a comparison on the screen. The youtube videos have an inconsistent lighting to judge it properly.

The Chinese review of Y580 at Å䱸GTX660M£¡ÁªÏëY580ÐÔÄÜÆÀ²â£¡Ö±²¥ÖУ¡_ÁªÏëY480/Y580ÂÛ̳_̫ƽÑóµçÄÔÍø²úÆ·ÂÛ̳ shows P10515 for Vantage, and they're using some pretty old drivers (295.93, older than all the other GTX660M benchmarks I've seen). Therefore, I'm inclined to think that Andrew's benchmark is off.
-
Here's some interesting stuff.
According to the futuremark hardware pages, the 660m will outperform the 650m in 3dmark 11 and 06, but not in vantage. These are of course estimated values, but maybe it's off because vantage is an older benchmark.
650M
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - Benchmarks
660M
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M - Benchmarks
It will be interesting to see other peoples benchmarks. The 11k-12k values must have been overclocked cards.
Few more days and I'll be able to join in on the fun. -
Please post the 3DMark scores. Many of us are extremely anxious about that. Please also post the screenshots.. thanks!
-
So the worst case scenario is, the 660M will have the same performance as 650M?
-
That should be the case. 640M / 650M / 660M share the same actual chip, but are binned differently by NVIDIA (if a chip can achieve a higher frequency at a given voltage, it is labeled 660M as opposed to 640M). At 1080p it's mostly a comparison of the GDDR5 variant of 650M with the 660M, and the 650M has a lower max frequency than the 660M. Therefore, yes, the 660M should be better than the 650M.
However, Lenovo has used a gimped GT 555M (which had a huge number of shaders disabled). Right now I would like to know beyond all doubt that the Y580 has a full powered GTX660M. The screen images of GPU-Z on the Y580 show indeed the identical chip as found in the ASUS G55VW, so odds are good. What remains is to eliminate driver / other software environment variables from the comparison and see that the Y580's 660M is performing at the same level as that of the G55VW. -
The G55VW has the following scores:
3DMark 06 - 16041 (1280x1024)
3DMark Vantage - 11492
3DMark 11 - 2543
The 580 should have comparable results.
Review Asus G55VW-S1020V Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews -
Maybe an actual benchmark on games is better since these 3D testing software have different parameters in measuring GPU. If games like BF3 or Diabo 3 run better on 660M, it should be enough for consumers to know that it is indeed faster than 650M.
-
Again, that is newer driver 296.01. I would like to see someone's Y580 score with the same driver version.
-
I have a question, I have the y580 and just did a benchmark test with Just Cause 2 and at the end, under my comp specs, it listed the integrated card and not the GTX 660, do I need to tell my comp to use the 660? And how. Thanks!
-
after looking at the alienware m14x , hp dv6-7000 and the msi ge60.... I am about 90% I am going with this laptop..... has anyone been able to confirm that the msata slot is there is you do not get the 32gb msata option.... I want to add a bigger one so don't need the added cost /wait time of the one with the drive....
Thanks -
There are videos on youtube running Crysis 2, BF3, and Max Payne 3 by micski2. So far it looks good in case anyone's curious about gaming performance.
-
I don't know if this has already been posted, but there are actual benchmarks scores using the GTX 660m from a Y580 taken from Lenovo forum if anyone is interested.
-
I ordered mine recently (1080p screen and 1TB 5400rpm HDD) and it is scheduled to come in by Monday. If anyone plans to or can comment on installing an mSATA SSD on the y580 that would be great
-
Hi
I am seriously considering buying this notebook but only version I have available here is one with i5 3210m CPU.
Do you think it would be futureproof and enough for gaming (Skyrim, some strategy games, maybe COD or BF) on decent settings.
Thank you in advance -
For gaming the GPU is more important than the CPU. The i5 version of Y580 is equiped with the same GTX 660m, which is actually future-proof.
-
There are games that also heavily rely on cpu i.e. witcher 2, gta 4. A quad core comes in handy there.
I can't decide whether to pick this laptop up or not. It just seems too cheap for what it's offering..
What's the catch? Bad build quality/after sales/etc?
I am also considering the Asus N53 or perhaps the new Dell l521x
Sent from my Incredible S using Tapatalk 2 -
It was an out of the box run, no programs uninstalled etc. I'll run again for the final review. Also, the 1TB 5400RPM drive is slower than the 7200RPM drive in the HP dv6t-7000 reviewed. Shouldn't affect things that much, but a small factor in the score nonetheless.
3DMark 11 was 2,289, attached screenshot of that.Attached Files:

Could someone help me out here, I know the y570 had Ana actual physical button to push, am I missing something?
-
After falling asleep while working on my laptop last night I'm finally able to post some of my own thoughts - after that I'll go back through and see if there are any questions I can answer that have been posted.
Initial thoughts are that the build quality is VERY good - it feels sturdy, the materials feel of high quality, and it just feels like a well built machine when you pick it up. The screen looks great to me and the colors really pop well - I can't believe I've went this long without a 1080p laptop! There are really too many good things to talk about with this laptop, so instead I'll just go into the few things I haven't liked so far.
First, to me the touchpad is a bit large and positioned a little too far to the left. I have pretty large hands because I'm a pretty big guy, but I find myself constantly accidentally hitting the touchpad with my left hand while typing. I've ended up disabling it for now and using a wireless mouse (which I generally do with my laptops anyway), but the positioning for me is a bit off - it probably won't be that way for everybody.
Secondly, I remember the y570 having a switch that I could turn the graphics card on or off, and an application on the computer that I could set which applications to use the built in graphics and which to use the graphics card - this has neither. The only thing I can tell that determines what uses what is the energy management console where you can select: Power Saver, Balanced, High Performance, and Lenovo Dynamic Graphics. It doesn't tell you which does what, which is annoying, so I've been leaving mine on High Performance for setup and benchmarks. Maybe someone else can enlighten me on whether there is another way to select which graphics to use.
Finally, the booting and performance the first few minutes after startup feel sluggish and slow to me. It could be because I've been spoiled with an SSD on my last few machines, but it doesn't feel at all how it should after boot (i have the 1TB 5400 RPM model). I do have a 256gb mSATA MyDigitalSSD on order that I will hopefully get soon, but unfortunately USPS seems to have lost it and I have to wait until next week to contact MyDigitalDiscount regarding the error per USPS' guidelines for reporting lost mail. I'm sure that once I have it installed the laptop will feel more like I would expect and I'll be sure to comment on it once I have that replaced.
Onto the benchmarks. I ran two separate ones - 3D Mark Vantage Basic and Heavenly Benchmark. With 3D Mark I scored 11,329 combined (9,893 graphics, 20,068 CPU), but since it was the basic version I was only pushing 1280 x 1024 resolution FWIW. I've never used Heavenly before, but I saw it requested so I ran it as well - if someone wants to tell me how it performed there as to what was expected I'd appreciate it. With it I received a score of 717 in 1920 x 1080 resolution. Both benchmarks ran between 28.5 and 30 FPS on average.
As requested earlier here is a list of the drivers and applications included on the Lenovo Partition:
- Drivers
- AHCI, Audio, Bluetooth, Camera, Card Reader, Energy_Management, Intel Wireless Display, IRST, LAN, Lockkey, MEI, OneKey_Recovery, OneKeyTheater, Touchpad, USB 3.0, NVidia Graphics, Intel Graphics, Wireless Music, WLAN
- Applications
- Adobe_Reader, McAfee, ReadyComm, VeriFace, YouCam
I have not yet played any games, but I have Diablo 3, BF3, TF2, BFBC2, L4D2, Portal 2, and FC2 currently downloading and will hopefully have the chance to play them tonight. If there are any other games someone would like to see performance on let me know - if I own the game I'll install it and give it a whirl. - Drivers
-
Unfortunately not missing anything as far as I can tell. No physical button and no Optimus software like the y570 had to force different graphics for different applications (unless I am missing something as well)
-
So it's safe to conclude that the fhd screen of y580 is very good?
-
Could it be that you weren't running the free version and not at 1280x1024? Or that you only posted the graphics score instead of the combined score?
Thanks for the write up. That vantage score is in line with what we've seen for similar machines. Feel better about the 660m now.
Glad they included most of the software on that partition. Won't have to worry too much after doing the clean install.
Mine got to Kentucky last night. Monday is almost here
-
Hmm, would it be possible to take out the DVD/BR drive and swap in a normal SSD? Maybe with the assistance of one of those caddy things?
-
Great score for Vantage GPU. That's what I was expecting. What is the driver version?
Thanks for the review! +rep -
Thx for this test. did you run it on default settings? Could you max them out for comparison? (without 3D of course)
On my desktop with C2D E8200 and GF 560Ti I've got a little above 1600 on default settings and 610 on maxed.
I've run this test on old notebook with Core Duo 1.8GHz and Radeon X2300. On default setting it got 28
-
Yes. Its gorgeous.
-
I'm easy to please and coming from a DV7-1279WM so to me the screen is the best I've ever used
so I would say it's really good. Others may have a more professional opinion.
Thanks! That's using the 295.93 driver - it's the one packaged on the Lenovo partition with the rest of the drivers. A little outdated I believe, but looks like it will work well.
Thanks for the comparisons! I'll max it out tonight for you. In surprising news apparently it takes USPS 13 days to go from NY to OH because I just got an email that my SSD arrived. Looks like I get to redo everything again tonight
Not a problem, that's definitely a lot better than what some of the others were showing. I may play around with a few different driver versions as well to see if they make any difference. Hopefully yours clears KY over the weekend flawlessly and you get it on Monday. If you get the "warehoused" email from UPS I would check back and not wait for another email - I never got one that said it passed the customs scan, I just saw the update on their site.
I don't see why you couldn't, but I'd recommend an mSATA SSD instead of removing the optical drive. Maybe I'm just old school, but I like having it there in case I need it. -
295.93? Excellent. That means there's still more to be squeezed out of this GPU.
