Hi I just bought a Y580 and plan on moving the HDD to the optical drive with a caddy and installing an SSD in the original bay.

The model I bought has a 5400rpm 1TB Seagate Momentus.

My current laptop has a 7200rpm 500GB WD Scorpio Black.
It's been used for 1.5 years and is only a third full.
I will be transferring some files from the desktop but shouldn't exceed 400GB on the HDD.

Looking at benchmarks, the Momentus has a slight advantage in average transfer rate but much slower access time and burst rate.

Considering the mileage, size, and speed which HDD should I use in the Y580?

I'm surprised, I thought the 7200rpm would whip the 5400 rpm's *** every which way. Still, considering you are going to have a SSD boot drive, I'd go for the 1 TB. 7200 RPM will just be extra heat imo. Assuming you have a big enough SSD to store all installed applications, a drive for media storage does not need extra speed.
