I've been gaming on the laptop ever since I got it ~21 months ago (September 2012) and only now have I noticed massive GPU throttling due to heat.

The fan is working fine and there's not a lot of dust, so I have a hunch it's a thermal paste issue, since this guy ( Lenovo Y580 Disassembled + Repasting the GPU and the CPU) also had overheating and replacing the thermal paste fixed it. I tried disassembling the laptop to access the GPU / CPU, but I can't remove the two screws under the optical drive to get the keyboard bezel off. For some reason they're screwed on really tightly and I think I mangled the screw head while trying to loosen them. I think I'd have to find a drill to drill through the screws.

I didn't buy the extended warranty so I don't think sending it in to Lenovo for repairs is possible.

    What are my options?
