Well, the title pretty much says it all. Sent my laptop in 3 weeks ago (yes, 3 weeks) because the back light in my LCD had died. Just received the same unit with a new screen and I immediately noticed that it is matte. Haven't decided if this is an upgrade yet as I haven't had much time to check the quality and it's been 3 weeks since I've last touched this machine.

There's also a stuck (green) pixel dead in the middle of the screen, which I am furious about. So Lenovo had my unit for 3 weeks and sent it back with a stuck pixel, and a different screen than the one I paid for. Awesome job. Calling customer service first thing in the morning if I can't get this thing to unstick.

get one of those free dead pixel apps

    massage the pixel

    see if that fixes it

Before you call lenovo............ Load up hwinfo64 and tell us what model lcd you got?

i think some of us would like a matte screen, especially if it has almost 90% gamut.

No luck with the dead pixel sadly. I've tried all the tricks: massage, gentle heat, rapidly flashing colors overnight... It's driving me insane as it's square in the middle, and my last screen was perfect. Hoping Lenovo understands why I'm not very happy.

New screen is LG Philips LP156WF1. What's the original?

Apart from the stuck pixel, what do you think of the screen (ie color reproduction, viewing angles, etc.)? did you get the FHD panel? I like the glossy that comes with the Y580 minus the large Bezel, but I wouldn't mind having a matte instead.

the original is also LG LP156WF1-tlc1

looks like you got the matte version of the same screen.

having one dead pixel sucks, but the pixel is so small, some people wouldn't notice

I'd say the screen is about the same, which would be expected since it's the same model, but matte. The viewing angles are not too shabby, and color looks fine, but I'm of the opinion that matte screens just aren't as sharp as glossy - it sort of has that hazy, dull look. That's not very technical but to be honest I haven't had a chance to use it much since yesterday.

If not for the stuck pixel I probably wouldn't mind the matte, but this thing is driving me nuts. And if having a flawless screen means I get the glossy back I'm fine with that. Hard not to notice a bright white dot on the screen of a gaming/multimedia laptop when many of the scenes and images will be dark. Web browsing, not so much. But I didn't pay $1200 just to browse the web.

Either way, called Lenovo and they seemed to understand, so they're sending someone to me for a follow up repair. Hopefully that goes well...

    FHD, by the way.

You loose some and gain some,

Gloss, vivid colors (higher contrast and brightness) and "clearer" but HEAVY Glare
Matte, No Glare and "higher saturation" but you can visualize the darkness between individual white pixels (grainy look).

    Summed up. :)

Exactly what's going on here - the haze I described. I believe this is called the "screen door effect."

Indoors, I had been having nearly zero glare issues with the glossy screen. As such I think I'd prefer it in this case where visual quality is important.

In any case, I will update at some point when/if this gets resolved. I'm still clinging to hope and running the stuck pixel sequence :(

I saw those too and was curious. But the ad didnt say anything about glare reduction.. so i figured it was just to prevent scratches. Let us know how it works!

@OP that is very strange, I didnt even see a matte screen option at lenovos website when I was looking at configurations of y580s. Have you contacted lenovo "customer service?"

^^ repair shops use whatever they have. You're not always going to get factory parts

Definitely true, as they had my laptop so darn long! My status said "waiting on a part..." or something like that the whole time. Guess they scrambled for a replacement.

I'm getting more and more used to the matte screen now. However, Lenovo has scheduled for an on-site repair, we we'll see how that goes.

There's an oddly backlit spot on the screen (dime-sized), stuck pixel, scratches on my loptop exterior, and the new screen is not squarely installed into the lid. All of these things combined I feel like it's not too much to ask for another look. I'm the kind of person who will go completely insane trying to ignore these little details for the next three years. Customer service was pretty understanding as well, so that's a good sign.
