Several hours on the telephone with Microsoft and Lenovo level 2 techs have not resolved the problem of upgrading from W 7 to 8. The machine (Ideapad Y580) is 3 weeks old and has a 1 TB HDD and a ~60 GB SSD. I am not an expert but what I gather is that the format of the SSD (where the OS sits) not is not compatible with W8. I am waiting for callbacks but in the meantime, any ideas? Thank you.

I just returned the Y580 and bought a Thinkpad W530 with W8 installed. It turns out that the technicians did not know (nor did I) that the SSD and the HDD make up a virtual drive (part of Rapid Start technology) that has to be "undone" before an OS upgrade using an utility available at the Lenovo website. The virtual partition has to be re-done aster the OS upgrade. The techs made me reformat the drives in a conventional manner and therefore, the computer was a real mess. Really irresponsible of the techs (Microsoft help) to do things that they do not have the knowledge for. The Lenovo techs were no help either. Perhaps the technology was too new for them all.
