Hey guys, I just got a new router (the Netgear N900) and realized that my laptop isn't compatible with the 5GHz wireless band! Sure I could use the 2.4, but come on, even my girlfriends iPhone 5 connects to the 5GHz band. Is there any way to upgrade the wireless card in this machine to be able to utilize the 5GHz wireless band?

    Thanks!

Not without a modified (hacked) BIOS. Lenovo has a whitelist of Wireless cards you can use. :(

Here is the list, from the Y580 HMM:

There are not any 5GHz cards ( ABGN), in the list.

So the answer to your question is, if you don't care about your warranty, hack away!
