I've only used the battery once.
I discharged the battery to 50%, then set the energy management software to hold the battery at 60% charge in "battery protection mode".

    that was several days ago.

To check if my battery is working correctly, I charge the battery up from 60% today, and it stops at 92%, and won't charge further.

I pulled the plug and replugged, thinking it would resume charging. It did not.

Then I check Hwinfo64, it says my battery's designed capacity is now 62wHr !!!! instead of 72whr like it said when I received this 2 weeks ago.
Windows also suddenly says my battery is 100% charged......... at 62whr.
I lost 10whr just like that, and I didn't even use the battery fully even once.

Better check your batteries. discharge it to 10% and see if it charges back to 100%.

I'm going to discharge and recharge, and see if I can get 72whr back. If not, I'm going to RMA the battery.

I don't see how the Energy Mgmt software can mess up the battery calibration so much.
or perhaps I really did get a defective battery

I think mine is okay.. I use the same settings as you, and occasionally charge it to full for traveling. No issues observed.

Did you try going to advanced features>battery gauge reset?

all that battery gauge reset does is completely drain the battery and recharge it.

What worked for me was running the battery down to zero, take the battery out, then hold down power button for 30 seconds to try to reset the bios. Supposedly, the battery capacity is read from the acpi bios value.

It now reads 72whr design capacity again, but I have not been able to charge it fully yet. The last drain/recharge pumped it back to 68whr. Still 5% short.

I hope I don't have to do this again in the future. This deep drainage supposedly kills the battery faster.

update: After 2nd full discharge, now my battery shows 85whr of juice from the 72whr battery.
first it was 12 under, now it's 12 over.

this sanyo battery gauge really sucks. wrong both times. Now it's probably going to shutdown when it says there's 17% battery left.

sounds like a messed up battery for sure.. i just my battery about once a week.. bringing it down to 5% or 10% and recharging up to full.. so far in about a month.. 0% wear and it says the battery is 7,649 :p
I would say RMA the battery.

yep. lenovo is shipping a replacement battery to me.
pretty good service, i must say. If this were asus, I'd have to pay shipping to send my bad battery back

I could not get the charge reading to correct itself. Still says 85whr even after discharging completely.
and the laptop died with "20%" battery juice left, of course, as expected.

I don't believe these can be overcharged. After my experience, I won't believe the battery meter if it says it has more than 72whr.

interesting.. all i can say is the battery meters are usually accurate.. my alienware's battery lasted very very long at the begining.. and it said it had more charge then the design charge.. then it had some wear to it and the battery life went to the average that people were seeing :S
