Can anyone please tell me the speed of their T43 (single layer) burner??

I'd read it was a "poor burn" (?) and only 2X for -R or 2.4X for +R, but that it was supposedly 4X in newer built T43's??

I am looking at a new T43 2668 discounted model, and i don't wanna drag along an external burner on the off-chance i may wanna burn a dvd.
Do i have to get the T60 just for a better burner? lol

    Thanks,.. SB

I think it is the 4x on the T43. Sadly the T series, including the T60, continues to use Panasonic drives which are not very good drives.

Can anyone please confirm yes or no 4x burn on their T43?? Thanks!

Does anyone know the part # of the burner on their T43? (i could get the specs given the part#).

The T60's use part#40Y8623, which supports dual-layer burn @2.4x and burns 8X to DVDR and DVD+R)

I was commenting on the quality of the burns using Matshita drives. If you look at the reviews of the T43 they all say 4x max burning.

My current thinkpad only has combo, but yes i've read about the poor "burn quality"... whatever that means??

    T43 DVD Write: 16X CD-R, 8X CD-RW, 2X DVD-R/RW, 2X DVD-RAM, 2.4X DVD+R/RW

Lenovo phone person told me today that the T43 currently ships dvd burner part#40Y8623 (which is what the T60 uses -- can T43 & T60 use SAME optical?)

The t43 and t60 Can use the same optical drive. However, the edge of the laptops are shaped differently. The t43 optical drive's edge is half flat, and half angled inward. The t60's drive is completely flat. If you put a t43 drive into a t60, there will be a little gap where the drive angles inward, and if you do the opposite, the drive will stick out a bit at the bottom. However, I have switched them, and they do work perfectly fine.

This might give you some info about the DVD burner.

Thanks for the link, it confirms the sad 2x burn speed of the T43
On re-calling Lenovo, the person confirmed 2X and the part #73p3342 (no longer avail).

You can upgrade to 8X burn part# 40Y8622, and indeed it's the same as the burner for the T60 except for the bezel. Part #40Y8623.

The error rate can get quite high on Matshita drives especially at the end of the discs. It was in the case of the two I owned which can lead to playback errors or trouble reading discs later on.

That sucks. Is that the case even on the T60 or Z61t? (which both use the expensive burner part #40Y8623)

I have not seen a ThinkPad with a DVD burner that was not a Matshita.

That one burns DVD's at the very same speed as the Matshita, lenovo part #40Y8622 and 40Y8623.

    The T43 i tried today (266892U) contained a Matshita UJ-822S, and a google search confirms it writes DVD+R and -R at only 2x to 2.4x. :(
