I'd like to get some insight into how common this issue is. Are 90% of us hearing / experiencing this hissing noise? or is it more like 5%?

If you're not familiar with this issue, it is a high pitched noise that your machine may emit when running off the battery. Some describe it as a high pitched hissing noise, a squeal, rapid beeping etc. If you think your machine is making strange electronic noises only when on battery, please vote yes.

No hissing with my notebook on battery.

Actually my desktop does a high pitched whine when I turn off the fans.

I had the same thing. You have to go into the bios settings and turn off cpu power or performance control something like that. It fixed it right away. It happens on a very high amount of core 2 duo configurations.

I had this problem and found a solution in seconds while searching on the forum instead of making a poll that wont give solutions...

I realize using a poll is a cure measure to gage how much of an issue this is, but it was the best I could come up with. As is apparent, there are many different kinds of hiss, coming for many different sources, so the results may be a little skewed.

Yes, I know there is a "fix" for the hiss, but this "fix" is to disable the lower power states of your cpu! I do not accept that as a "fix." It is a broken feature of Intel's cpu/chipsets since CoreDuo? I'm not willing to sacrifice up to an hour of battery life to "fix" what should not be broken. The fact that some people seem to *not* have the hiss makes me wonder if it is a quality control issue?

Hence this poll. I know the hiss is common, but how common? 9/10 1/10?

Guys, especially if you are *not* hearing the hiss, please vote! Lets learn from each other and find out how common an issue this really is.

Well I didn't really lose any battery life when I disabled the cpu lower power states. Still have around 2 hours and 50 minutes.

I have searched low and high to fix this problem on my T60, and have found the solution
    http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/archive/index.php?t-3516.html

The hissing/buzzing that you are all hearing is the Cpu changing power states - the Core 2 Duos are capable of changing in many power states depending upon the usage - and the hiss comes from a particular power state that it goes into. Usage of RMClock helps alleviate that issue. I have found that it can also easily be remedied by turning off CPU Bus / PCI Bus management in the BIOS as well.

That'd due to the CPU changing states as well.

I suppose how much battery life you lose will depend on personal usage. If you're doing mainly cpu intensive things anyway, then disabling the lower c3 and c4 states wouldn't have much impact.

It's still early, but so far it seems like at least ~ 1/3 users experience it...

I forget which one is the actual cause of the hissing, but I remember in RMClock there is an "enable popdown mode" that I use that fixed the hissing altogether.

Follow the instructions to download RM Clock and check 'enable popdown mode' to eliminate the hissing.

Ok, after some research it appears to come from the Ethernet port when I'm doing big file transfers..
