I've been contemplating getting a T61P. The price is certainly right.. with EPP and such I can get a nicely configured one under 1500.00.

That said, the screen resolution concerns me. I like high res screens, and 1680x1050 would be perfect. BUT, I have to say 1920x1200 is a lot to pack into a 15.4" screen. Its enough of a concern for me to consider going with a regular T61 instead. What are your thoughts?

I have glasses, and the T61p doesnt seem to be a problem. I have been used to 1400x1050 for a while, and the 1920 res of the T61p was easy enough to adjust to. Later tonight I am going to but a 1680 T61 against the 1920 T61p to see which has the better screen color/angle wise.

Is the T61p even available under EPP yet? Last time I looked it wasn't...

I'd really wanna hear some comments also.
The other day I've stopped by my local WorstBuy, to check out the notebooks.
The vast majority of them, even the cheapest Celeron based ones, featured very nice, bright displays (bad viewing angles but it's expected).
My FlexView might be nice for viewing angles, but it's real dim in comparison.
BTW, there were two Lenovo's on the shelf (15.4" T60 and V3000) - with the dimmest displays of the whole bunch!
Well, with the lone exception of an $1700 gaming Asus! But that one looked exceptionally bad, could be defective though.

I had HP nc8430 with 1680x1050...It was not very bright - but resolution was perfect for my liking...
Was waiting for T61p, but resolution killed the deal. I have not seen 1920 screens, but somehow I am sure they are crap considering high res and low brightness.
So ordered MacBook Pro 2.2 yesterday on MacMall for $1844. I know it does not have 1680x, but I can not find any other decent Santa Rosa laptop with good video and good screen. Also can not wait till September for HP 8510p...

That was my main concern. The reason I went with the T61 today. 1900x1200 is just too much for the 15.4' screen. I really wanted the 570 gpu. But, since that is the only diffence in the two machines. I just got the T61.

Kevin, wow, it looks like you are one of the few who have received the T61p. I'm looking forward to any comments you can provide on you new machine, i.e. screen quality (brightness, contrast, sharpness, backlight eveness), noise level on the machine, performance, etc. That'll be great to get your feedback on the WSXGA vs WUXGA (T61 vs. T61p). Any chance you can post some pictures as well?

By the way, do you happen to know the manufacturer of your display, LG or Samsung.

    Thanks.

Nobody has recieved the T61p here in america. A few in the UK have. If any of you have ordered the T61p post your shipping dates in the T61p shipping dates thread.

Would you be able to post some pictures of the display (preferably with the T61 in the same frame)?
    Thank you.

I would not worry too much about the brightness of T61P. Its higher contrast ratio will make BIG difference.

    FACTS:
    T61P 15.4" WUXGA - contrast ratio 500:1, 175 nits
    T61 14'1" WXGA+ - contrast ratio 300:1, 200 nits
    T61 14'1" WXGA - contrast ratio 300:1, 185 nits

For those of you interested in what the various screens look like compared to each other, do you have a certain "known color" high resolution picture you want displayed on the laptops to compare against? I can get a shot of all 3 screens lined up (wuxga, swxga, sxga flexview) for the comparison.

Oh, and my tired eyes at 11pm are having some issues reading the screen. Take god for customized font sizes ;)

I'm trying to decide between the T61 1680x1050 vs the T61p 1920x1200. If you could show one image of the Vista desktop with the start menu open, and one image of say internet explorer open full screen on a news site ( www.cnn.com etc)

It's such a hard choice. I plan on using the laptop for Development in Visual Studio and would love the extra real estate, but I don't want to have to squint any more than I have to. At work I run dual 1680x1050 monitors so I'm pretty used to that resolution. 1920x1200 in a 15.4 would be crazy. I just cant decide.

Help us out with some screenshots!! :)

lol, lskeys, that's the BIGGEST difference between the 2 machines, and arguably, the most important one for a power user.

Nice Pictures Kevin. Thanks. No more IBM Thinkpad label. Just Thinkpad. The keyboard seem different too. Seem like a better keyboard on the T61p. Kevin, could you show the actual desktop. How the font size of WUXGA compare to the WXSGA? They have the same contrast ratio 500:1. But the T61p is 175 nits v. 200 nits of the T61. I would like to see the actual desktop.

Thanks Kevin. Can you tell us who the manufacturer of your T61p display is. I'm assuming Samsung. Photos are great, but could you provide some general comments on the quality of the WUXGA screen, i.e. brightness, viewing angles, sharpness, color, etc.

Thanks. Looking forward to your full review.

If you could give me some hints on finding it out, I would be more than greatful ;)

The model I have is a demo unit, with a non standard model number. That makes the shipping parts lookup almost impossible, and unless I could get some software to view the LCD panel data, its all up in the air unless I tear into the display cover to see the back of the panel.

PC Wizard 2007 is a great free utility to find out manufacturers for various parts of your computer. It also does some performance benchmarking. If you get the Zip File, you can just put it in a folder or even a USB stick and run the software (no installation necessary).

If you click on the video icon, you should get a bunch of info. You'll probably see:

    Manufacturer : LTN154U2-L05

Samsung makes LTN154U1 and LTN154U2. LG makes LP154WU1. LG is considered the superior panel.

Everest 4.0 is a much more comprehensive utility with larger more recent parts databases.
You can try one for free.

Hi Kevin. Did you ever get a chance to look up the manufacturer for your LCD panel? In general, how do you like it in terms or brightness, sharpness, color, viewing angles?

I'm look forward to your full review. Will you be posting it here (on notebookreview.com)? Thanks for all your feedback thus far.

Hi Kevin. How is your T61p review coming along? I think a lot of us are eager for it considering there is a dearth of formal reviews out there (more like none). Thanks.
