I've been really excited for the release of the Z Series, since I love the IBM laptops but prefer the widescreen format. I went to the website and to my dismay there was no "Let me build it" option. This means I have to spend extra money (several hundred dollars) more than I want to to get out of the Celeron M zone.

My plan was to configure one using a Pentium M, XP Home, and 256 mb of RAM. I would then upgrade this ram on my own to a gigabyte (from Newegg) and save ~$200. I have no need at all for any of the XP Professional features, so that would save me another $100.

Is the "Let me build it" option still to come or am I stuck with a prebuilt model? If so I'll have to go with another brand, because I just can't afford a $1700 laptop right now.

I looked on the US web site, and there is a "configure" option for the Z60M, but with only a few choices. There are more choices for the Ts, but not much. Hopefully they're still working on it.

I was excited to. I've never owned an IBM but these new models make me want to. The company has a good rep for ruggedness, security and support etc. and portability

However I to noticed the lack of options on the site. Maybe this will be forthcoming? Also I gotta say I do believe that a portable one notebook would be better- much more power (hd, processory, graphics etc.) but still light and rugged.

The problem with most "buisness" notebook sellers outside of Dell is the lack of configurability. No one does it like Dell does...HP is the worst, but IBM wasn't the hottest either. Basically, you have a choice of (a lot of) models, and you can tack on RAM and change the HDD, that's about it.

will often go the route of multiple SKUs to satisfy the various tastes out there and only allow for certain configuration changes, they'll always add more skus as time goes by, it's understandably a little frustrating if what you want isn't there or you have to pay more for certain options you don't want -- it's either a game of wait and see what they add, see if other retailers outside of ibm.com get different skus and configs (seems odd but it happens a lot that you can get a config you want at say newegg.com but not ibm.com) or see if they make certain things more configurable.
