I'm kind of curious...which of the three would you prefer. And if you have a second, could you tell me why?

They all seem to have exactly what I am looking for, but the T43 is the only one (at least in the price range that I am looking at ~1600) that has not just a DVD-R, but a 7200rpm HDD, as well.

Is the Z-series built as well as the T-series? Do you gain anything by going with the larger screen of the Z60m (besides added weight)? Do Thinkpads sometimes have a problem taking some time to get the bugs worked out of a new model? Anything else you'd like to add?

    Thanks

i'm leaning towards the T43 atm.. although the Z60m looks pretty promising too. I think the Z70T is over priced.

I would consider a T43 with DVD/CD-ROM drive as ThinkPad DVD burners are not very good. Spend the extra cash getting a laptop drive like the NEC 6650 and put in a case. Then get the modular battery. That is what I did anyway. Without knowing what you are doing with it, it is hard to help.

A T43 comes in both 14" and 15" screen sizes. The 15" SXGA+ screen is excellent, the 14.1" SXGA+ is also good, but not as excellent. XGA screens aren't worth considering IMO.

The T series are arguably better built, but lack some features present on the Z series. The Z60m can be configured with a better graphics (X600) card than a T43 (X300). Only the T43p's which are super expensive can be configured with a graphics card as good as the X600 (FireGL V3200).

I wouldn't go for Z60t, because it only comes with integrated graphics and its screen is somewhat dull, or so I've heard. Even if you want a 14", the T43 would be better (unless you want widescreen).

All things accounted for, I'd probably go for the T43.

having used all three, I still prefer the T43 even though you get more ports with the widescreen Z60 machines. It's just thinner, lighter (assuming you get the 14") and, maybe I'm a a bit of a carmudgeon for saying it, feels and looks more like a ThinkPad ought to.

Yes, as the previous posters too, I would also prefer the T43 for several reasons (...too many to list them all, so in short).

The T-series is still the long time approved *real* Thinkpad line par excellence for business users, it's sturdy, feels comfortable and not too heavy even for very mobile users. So it offers all those well known attributes you would expect from a good business line Thinkpad.

Even the new Z60m models also partially offer good widescreen TFT-panels, overall performance, battery life and some more ports to use etc., these do not feel quite exactly like T-series models. They are more bulky and some of the well known common Thinkpad attributes have slightly changed here in a manner, that it maybe needs some time for long time Thinkpad users to get used to these new models.

Related to the Z60t I can say that I had much higher expectations for these 14" widescreen models. I hoped they would have better, much more luminant TFT-panels assembled and would be offered with slightly higher resolutions. - Also for what the Z60t models currently and finally offer, they are by far too overprized (especially in europe). So all in all I'am somehow disappointed by the Z60t series and would recommend instead -for people who are looking for a widescreen Thinkpad- a Z60m modell.

So in sum up, I would order the list of Thinkpads to take from the named models like the following:

    1. T43
    2. Z60m
    3. Z60t

I own an ibm X40. It has the same keyboard as the T43.

I've just tried the keyboard on the Z60 and it is deffinetly a different keyboard. The keys do not have the same response, it's not nearly as nice.

Trustedreviews.com recently said the same thing, I didn't believe them untill I tried it out for myself.

I tested the keyboard on z60t and T43, they are about the same. I don't see or feel any noticeable differences.

I vote for the Z60m, which I have voted with my dollars, as I am now waiting for mine to arrive (the long wait, apparently). It's got a terrific screen that puts the Z60t to shame and is bigger & brighter than the T43. It's got a far more modern port arrangement than the T43. It is very solidly made, and I think the titanium cover is sharp & provides extra protection for the screen. The only real drawback, if portability is a factor, is that it's somewhat heavy and bulky at 7 to 7.5 pounds (like many 15.4 inch computers). By the way, laptoplogic.com has just issued their in-depth review of the Z60m, and it is very favorable. :buyIBM:

T43 and it's cheaper than the Z60. I vote for the 14.1" due to extended battery life but the 15" is good too.
