I bought a thinkpad Z60t from my friend's brother a few days ago. He said "windows needed to be reloaded" or something, and when I started using it, the screen would get all garbled. Took a guess and thought it was either overheating, or the memory was bad, so I took one stick out and it works perfectly :D
although the heat isn't exactly a "problem", it still gets pretty hot around the processor/chipset area. Right now with prime95 running, these are the temps:

It doesn't make a difference is at 0 rpm or 4500 rpm, the temperature doesn't change much, if at all. With the fan off, when I stop prime95, the temperatures drop pretty quickly. I already replaced the old thermal paste with arctic silver 5, and tested the laptop before I put everything back together. All the heat stays away from the fan area for some reason.

Basically, the heat is all in the bottom portion of the heatsink (where it covers the processor and chipset), and there is very little or no heat where the heatpipe is next to the fan area, and the entire silver part of the heatsink. So why on earth isn't the heat transferring throughout the heatsink?

I undervolted, which seemed to help a lot. it's at 0.7v for 800 MHz, and 1.02v for 1.73 GHz. The processor is a pentium M 740.

Hopefully there are still a few of you out there with a Z60t/Z61t or something similar that may be able to help :D

if heatpipe is not transferring heat out, then this could mean that the fluid inside the heatpipe could have leaked out, which may explain why you can't keep your CPU cool enough.

That would make a lot of sense. Guess I'll look for a new heatsink then!

Think that could be some of the fluid (on the right, where it's dark)?

not sure whether you can contribute that dark stain to the fluid leakage. They are usually similar to acetone in chemical and physical properties.

I'm not quite sure what it is then, but it's working fine at least.
I bought a heatsink off ebay, the only problem is it doesn't quite fit right... it's a bit different than the heatsink that came with the laptop.

and you can see how little thermal paste is on the "new" heatsink, and how smashed one of the thermal pads is because of the different design of the heatsink. it was a little bent too, some heatsink fins were bent, and the material of the fins looked like they were lower quality.

now, the laptop won't boot completely into windows with that heatsink. it does dissipate heat better than the original, but obviously there's still something wrong. the processor gets above 80C with a load (fan max or off), and in the 40s with the fan off, idle. i do feel heat coming out of the vents at least.

tl;dr should i ask for another/a refund and send it back? or am i just doing something incorrect?
