When using the X61 via battery power there is an very annoying noise coming from the fan area. It is very noticible when the fan is off and hurts the ears after a few minutes. When set to 'high performance' it is not as bad but on 'power saver' it is unusable. Using AC power eliminates most of the noise but there is still a little bit.
I tried searching but couldn't find anything on this but the noise is so significant that I'm not sure why no one has said anything about it. Perhaps mine is broken?
Note, I used the X61 under Ubuntu and there is no noise other than the normal fan noise. Is it a problem with Vista and would it be better under XP?
thanks

I am running Vista Business and I didn't encounter this kind of problem. The fan is not loud when it is on battery power nor when is plugged in.

Are you using it on the Ultrabase?
-
No ultrabase, regular 4 cell slimline battery. Its not the fan noise but something else that is high pitched and unpleasant. I can only describe it like listening to headphones with a broken driver; it just hurts the ears. It is more noticable under 'high performance' but VERY noticable under 'power saver' mode. I think the noise is so obvious that if no one else notices it, then it must be my computer. But what confuses me is the the level of the noice changes alot depending of the power management. There is no high pitch noise under Linux, plugged in or not.

Very strange. Did you try doing a clean install, or an update of power management?

How do I get rid of the power management completely? I could just turn the brightness down with the buttons if I want to save battery.
