I was wondering if there is anyway to add the factory internal webcam to the x200. Mine came without one, I purchased it because it was only 500 bucks! Now I really want a webcam without carrying around an external one. I opened up the lcd panel and i saw the connector for the camera, and the screws, but that is all I know.
Thanks,
Kent

Can you get the part even? If the connector from the LCD is there to power it, I don't see why you can't just drop it in
.

I had the same idea: adding a webcam to my x200s with wxga+ screen.
It is really *ridiculous* that lenovo did not manage to fit a webcam in such a big beazel. The lcd panel seems the same size of the one in the x200 with webcam. The beazel seems the same size too.
How did you get an x200 for 500$? -
is it possible to get a x200 with that low of a price. It's hard to believe.
I was looking at my order status for a x200 earlier and I found this:
"44C5190 SBB 2X2UL.CON.II ANT.,WWAN,CAM " What's 'cam'? -
Camera...Webcam.
-
Yeah how the heck did you get an X200 for $500???
Anyway, I'd recommend buying an external webcam. The internal camera is pretty crap in my experience. Since it is probably going to cost you a significant amount to get an internal camera by the time you're done buying parts, not to mention the cost of your time and effort, I think you're better off buying a good Logitech camera for $70 or so. The picture quality on my 9000-series Logitech is pretty incredible and I'd prefer that over a grainy built-in camera any day. -

To the OP, I'm also dying to know how u managed to get a x200 for $500? -
I got the x200 for 500 bucks because this guy that works for a company upgraded their x200's to another brand. So he is just trying to get rid of it. ti came with a 4 cell and two 9 cells! it was a crazy deal and i just had to get it asap. plus it is amazing there is no problems with it.
I was asking because I just wanted the portability and convience of having a webcam. I looked up the part number and I was wondering If I should just order it. -
.

Hey guys, I thought to update you guys that I did successfully add my own webcam! I was hesistant at first, but thanks Jaredy for those pictures on how to remove the front LCD bezel. I just called up IBM and ordered the webcam. I then had to move the wireless antennaes over the the far right, and then placed the webcam in. The webcam works great!. As for the LCD bezel, I just ordered a replacement bezel so that it had a hole for the camera. In total it cost me about 50 dollars, which isn't bad. Its alot better than lugging around a webcam.
-
Did you take pictures! Sounds like a good mod for those who somehow get $500 x200's with no webcams
!
-
Hi...
Thanks for posting. I've been wanting to do the same with my X200. I also bought mine used and was surprised when it didn't come with the integrated camera.
Can you tell me the part #'s for the integrated camera and bezel replacement? I tried looking it up on the Lenovo website but didn't have much luck.
Thanks! -
And I paid the whole $1000+ for one without a webcam...
-
Hi.
I thought I'd update you on the installation of the webcam into my X200.
First off, it was pretty straight forward but there a few things you will encounter while doing this.
Attached are the pictures.
First off, the part # you need to order is...
FRU 42W8015 --> $44.80US + shipping
It comes with the camera, mounting bracket, and inset sticker with the camera hole. There is no need to order a new bezel, just peel the sticker away from your bezel and you'll see the holes.
Step 1: Removing the Bezel
Here is an awesome video from Lenovo that shows you how to do it. Find the LCD Disassembly video.
http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/X200/index.html
Step 2: Removing the sponge
You will find that there is a sponge stuck on top of the Thinklight where the camera needs to go. Remove the sponge. You will also see the connector for the camera.
You can also remove the two set screws at the top.
Step 3: Moving the Wifi Antenna
There is an antenna in the way. You need to take out the four screws holding the LCD screen in place. Once you remove them, you can lift up the screen (gently) and peel back the antenna tape. Before I could move the antenna to the right, I had to peel back two tapes. After you move it, restick the antenna tape and tuck the extra wire in the corner.
Step 4: Plugging in the Camera
Remove the protective tape from the camera connector. The connector to the camera has a protective tape on it, so you need to peel it off. Then you can plug the connector into the camera itself.
Step 5: Mounting the camera
With the sponge gone, you can now mount the camera. To do this you have to remove the two set screws.
Follow the instructions in the X200 Hardware manual.
Section 2040 - Page 115
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6632_03.pdf
Step 6: Replace the inset sticker for the camera into your bezel.
Step 7: Remount the Bezel
I had no problem taking the bezel off and/or remounting it.
Just follow the instructions in the Lenovo video.
That's it! Start-up your computer and Vista will recognize the new hardware. It worked right away with Skype and Google.
My X200 is great and now even better with the camera.
Good Luck!Attached Files:

i ordered one
-
i just did it
was madd easy took about 10-15 mins.
hardest part was removing the sponge
when taking apart the screen the easiest way is to go clockwise from the edge. -
I too, am interested in doing this... I got the 7454-2GU model.
How good is the integrated webcam anyway??? can anyone provide a screenshot? what are its technical specs?
I'm using this bulky clip-on thing from Samsung... ugh -

Thanks for sharing this indispensible site, Clix200! -
Sorry for bumping an old thread, I can only find this part on random sites for around 70.00, just wanted to see if there was a better place to order it before I took a chance. Thanks in advance.

I've run into a problem with this installation. If anyone has any thoughts on the following, I'd love to hear them. My X200 has six antennae across the top of the LCD panel, which means there is no obvious place to relocate the one of them which is blocking the camera mounting pins.
Reviewing the manual, I see that this is the MIMO antenna. I'm assuming that's used for 802.11n reception. (See the attached pic for a diagram.)
I tried slipping the MIMO antenna inside the larger wireless LAN (main) antenna immediately to the right. It fits snugly. Unfortunately it destroyed my thoughtput.
Download speed before inserting the antenna: 3.16 Mb/s.
After inserting the antenna: 0.40Mb/s
Curiously, the upload speed was about the same. Because I don't know any better, I'm assuming this is because MIMO is only used for downstream traffic.
I'm not using the WWAN connection, so I next tried sandwiching the MIMO antenna inside it. Bizarrely, this resulted in a near-doubling of throughput, though I think it's very likely that this is nothing more than the inconsistency of speed tests.
Still, this is making me wonder. Where would all this go if I got the laptop from the factory *with* the camera included?Attached Files:

Can this be done with the x200s?
-
-
Hi Clix200,
I see you managed to add the camera..congrats!!!
I am thinking about this myself, but I would like to know some things before I start.
for example, before the upgrade, did you have just a sticker where the camera is now?
so you just peel it away and after the camera install you stick another sticker?
I have a X200 tablet without the camera and have a donour X200 non-Tablet with a camera.
from you pictures on another forum seems that stickers are different sizes on tablet and non-tablet :smileysad: -
Try this Chinese website: www#taobao#com(Replace # with .), the biggest online shopping website in China, it's like eBay, you may find anything you want and the things on it are very cheap. Looking for the X200 webcam? Use this key word to search: "x200 摄像头" here is one of the result: item#taobao#com/auction/item_detail-0db1-38c506a816a65b0f8ce0bb37b396cebb.jhtml?cm_cat=0
(Replace # with .)The brand new webcam is only $25 (Tax included). If you need any help, let me know. -
I'm curious, how do you pay and get it shipped?
-
can you please give me the search frase for X200 tablet webcam? I tried inserting "tablet" in the keyword you posted but it does not work -
I think Taobao website only accept Alipay, it's similar to PayPal, I use Chinese bank account, you may try to use Visa (Only Visa, no MasterCard, no Amex), if you need to ship to outside China, you may contact the seller to pay more on the shipping. Last time, I ordered Adobe CS4 shipped to Canada by China Post, it cost me $40. Without a Chinese friend's help, it's very hard to shop on Taobao. But it really a good place shopping!
Plus, if you wanna buy software, I highly recommend Taobao. I bought a Norton Internet Security 2010 license for 2 years and 3 PCs, it only cost me $5! If you are looking for the Windows 7 OS, a genuine Windows 7 Ultimate license is only $10! Some sellers even provide you a MS Office license for free if you purchase their Windows 7. -
tablet in Chinese is 平板, tablet PC in Chinese is 平板电脑
Always, if you need any help, I am always to help. -
yes, so it seems - no x200 tablet webcams
anyway, great tips from you Jumpycalm - many thanks! -
Thank you!
For those that loose or damage their screw covers just buy them off ebay.
Keywords "screw covers x200" -
Sorry to bump this thread, but I found it immensely useful. In fact, I registered just in order to thank Clix200 for his excellent instructions. Also to JumpyCalm - thanks to his tip, I got the part from Taobao for $25. Then I installed it in 20 minutes following Clix200's instructions.
About the antenna relocation. I took the one off that was in the way. It was stuck in place through adhesive and also with a piece of tape. I pulled both off. I then took the tape off a second antenna to the right of the first. This enabled me to completely loosen the first antenna, whose wires were under the second antenna's tape. I then reset the second antenna's tape, and reset the first antenna to the right of the second, both with its adhesive and its tape. Everything it working like a charm!
Thanks to all! -
Thanks for the great posts. I also ordered and installed a 2MP integrated camera on my x200. I did everything according to the instructions except, I tore apart ! the tapes and just replaced the antenna out of the way. Do you think this will affect the WiFi? Also after installation, the bezel doesn't quite fit on the LCD, exactly in the location of the webcam, any ideas on this? could it because 2MP camera is actually x201's?
Also I haven't noticed any change of wifi functionality, everything seems to be working perfectly, the webcam is also perfect,
Thanks again for great photos and dicussions! -
Great work! i did this on my thinkpad a few mouths back, works flawlessly. 8)

Hello
New member here.
It's great to see this thread. I think I have sourced the same camera from this place:
NEW IBM thinkpad Integrated camera for X201 X200 X200S X201S X201i FRU 42W8015 | eBay
I am checking to see if the 'extra bits' they say they cn supply for a little extra are the metal mounting bracket and the plastic insert.
I will return to report my progress.
Best wishes.
