are all three of the trackpoint caps interchangable? ("cats tounge" oldest style, "soft rim" 2nd to newest style, and the newest "slightly rounded and textured" style). I own an x40 with the "soft rim" style and i would like to try the newer style, figured they changed it for a reason, might as well try it. The only thing that i am confused about is how the newer trackpoints you can tap to click, like a mouse button. Because of this reason, I dont see how the newer version would be compatible with the older, non click trackpoints.

The trackpoint caps should be interchangeable, in fact I have my "tap-to-click" setting disabled. To be 100% sure, call lenovo and ask, they should be happy to help. The clicking action is in the piece on the keyboard, it has nothing to do with the cap.
My cap is round with a square inside and the part that comes out of the keyboard is also sorta square. If yours is the same then you will probably be fine.

Is there anywhere to buy caps besides lenovo? I'd like to try some more, but I can't justify 10 dollars just to try some out.

look on ebay, they have TONS of them listed. you can find all three different styles for less than 5 bucks shipped. some of the listings are like a 3 or 4 pack of different styles, at the same price range. i tried my friends "newer dome" style on my x40 today and i like my "soft rim" style much better, and he agreed with me. just be careful because most of them on ebay are replicas and not "genuine IBM" products. i dont know if there is a difference between them, but its only 5 bucks. let us know what you think.
