called lenovo today to inquire as for some reason my t420 wont connect to my landlord's fios router but all other devices in the house will. my t420 will connect fine to all other routers including other people's fios routers. maybe the models are different.

anyway lenovo went straight into zombie mode wanting control of my computer, even after a fresh install, to poke around and waste 30 mins of my time.

anyway the question is are there any known issues? would swapping out to another 6300, 6250, or even a 5100 help? im assuming the 6250 is on the white list since it was an option when I purchased the t420 but not sure about the 5100 or possibly even a different card.

I can pretty much guarantee it isn't the T420 and the Intel 6300. That is a top combination.

You mentioned a new install of Windows. Is that a new install of Windows 7 and no other software?

Boot a "live" Linux CD and try to connect to the same router.

That should tell you whether you're looking at a hardware problem or a software issue.

If I were a betting man I'd suspect the latter.

    Back to the basics.

    1. Is the WIFI switch on the right side of the machine flipped to the on position and green?
    2. When you press Fn + F5, what do you see?
    3. Under Device Manager, what do you see for network adaptors?

My money's with George. Experience has taught me to suspect (in this order):

    1) Software
    2) Low-end consumer networking hardware
    3) Realtek NICs
    4) Broadcom NICs
    5) Atheros NICs
    6) Intel NICs

So my advice is to start at the top and work your way down. :D

    Try removing WEP.

(It's not like it's providing any security...)

Yea, the last report I heard of a similar situation like this was WEP versus using WPA2.

Please switch the router to use WPA2.

ok so I booted up ubuntu live and it connects fine. other than disabling WEP, which I will try when I get a chance to get access to the router, are there any other suggestions?

might have figured this out by going back to an older driver. went back to an even older driver and no luck. then picked the one in between and now works. hopefully this keeps up. very odd.

Most likely it was a configuration error.
