You can only fully utilize all 4 gigs of your ram with a 64-bit operating system.

I just finished doing a clean install for my X61 actually... Make sure you have plenty of time to spare. Took about 8 hours start to finish, but I was watching TV at the same time, so it could be shorter!

By the way, I followed this guide, and it worked flawlessly: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=144783

Its very detailed and the FAQ's in that guide were helpful.

    let's go over this again....

A 32 bit machine can adress 4 Mb of memory. But the exec is usually included ib that too. Usually the exec space is not displayed with the rest of the software and is all rights as seperate from exec space is euphemistically referred to as "user space". So a 32 bit machine will show (out of a 4 mb machine) about .5 gig, to go as part of exec space with the remaining 3.5 gb shown as being avaialable. 3.5 gb + .5 gb = 4 gb = 32 bits of addressing space.
