Am I the only unlucky one who got a whine T400?

I got my T400 yesterday and it seems that everything is fine with the pre-installed system (vista home basic). However, I started to hear whine noise during my clean-installation (vista ultimate) process and afterwards.

Surprisely, the noise was gone again after I restored it to the factory default, although I could hear the whine noise during the recovery process.

After several trials I finally found out that it is due to the "balance" power plan came with vista. The pre-installed system uses "enery star" power plan and there is no whine noise. My clean installed system uses "balance" as the default power plan and there is high-pitch noise.

Anyone experience similar problem? Should I get lenovo to replace my T400?

Where is the noise located? I have a beeping sorta sound coming from the top right part of mine... near the USB port. Sounds like the battery might be making the noise.

It basically beeps 3 times every five seconds.... sometimes more, together in succession, sometimes less. It didn't stop making this sound even during my clean XP install.

right part of the chasis, around the optial drive. I think it is the famous whine CPU problem, since it only become obvious when I use the "balance" power plan and I can silent it by disable the CPU power managment in BIOS.

Actually, it is more towards the center of the chasis. It may not be the CPU itself, but something on the motherboard.

Noticed the same. It's slight and almost inaudible at regular 'working' distance.

There are a lot of things that can whine on a computer or in electronics in general. My x200 whines. Google hitch pitch noises and thinkpads or any laptop brand really. My x200 has an SSD drive and I still get whine from the CPU at times (speedstep or power settings maybe). Could also be interference with the speaker. It is pretty annoying :\. Your whine might be from the ram though if it is in the center on the bottom.

I think you should get your brain replaced. I'm really appalled. What is it with you guys? The whining is because of a CPU fan or a capacitor. Its a manmade machine not a "magical solution to everything". Give it some leeway. You've yourself have admitted the machine makes those noises on certain power profiles. Guess what? Its a software thing! :/

I have zero noise, but I also custom configured my Power Options after my clean install.

    They are right.
I haven't noticed it in my T61p, but the noise existed in all my previous laptops in a specific power plan ("Always on") after installing flash player or java. I have no idea what was the reason but the noise existed.
If you can't hear it in your lap (me neither) - lucky you - but it does'n mean they are crazy or something like that.
So before saying that somebody has problems with his brain - just use your brain and be quiet ...

Nah, I think atlguy is saying that the whining is such a trivial problem, that it would be ridiculous to get Lenovo to replace it.

"Oh no, my laptop is getting warm! Do you think I should get Lenovo to replace it?"

My T400 has same strange high pitching sound, just on batterie. It drove me crazy. Now heard that HP 6930p had same whine noise. HP support told it is from CPU. Only thing you can do. Work in a noisy room or do power settings to balanced. Issue solved.

Ah the whining. Had it with my t61. Had it replaced and got a t400 and it has the same (only on battery). When I put the performance at low, it seems to disappear.

I just stopped thinking about it and now the problem is gone :).

FWIW, I don’t have this issue.
