    - just ordered an W500 and wanted a 7200 rpm drive....the 250 g option comes with Full Disk encryption, which for my purposes don't have a need for...can anyone who has this feature let me know if the FDE comes on automatic or can you disable it...thanks

This should give you more info: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/momentus/momentus_7200_fde

I *believe* if you don't set a hard disk password the FDE is not enabled. If you do, then data on the patters is encrypted.

If it were me, I'd order the W500 with the base 250GB/5400 drive, take the extra $110 the FDE drive costs and buy a 320GB/7200rpm drive plus enclosure (or Ultrabay hard drive adapter) and swap the drives. Use the original drive for additional storage or backups. For the same money you end up with over double the storage.
