i should get my thinkpad today.. if ups cooperates.. and im looking for some little program that will help me locate free wifi access points.. i travel alot and it would be nice to be able to stop at a coffee house that might have free wifi without having to go inside.. (i hate coffee smell but my wife loves it.. go figure) i read online that netstumbler is probably the best wardriving software.. anyone know anything else or have you used netstumbler on your thinkpad..

I use netstumbler but you have to be carful with the laws in the area you are in. Whether you can get on a open network or not depends on the law
-
well i understand that.. there are some that actually have their id as 'free public internet' in our area.. thanks -

I have the Intel ABGN wireless card and Netstumbler does not support it.
-
Netstumbler doesn't run on Vista and I wrote something with similar functionality. If there is much interest, I'll find a way to put it out.

yah i tried it but it doesnt support intel nor vista.. i ended up using one for my DS.. found a free one and i was able to sit 2 blocks away and still get 50% signal with my new r61.. awesome..

these work pretty well, and don't violate any laws I'm sure. -
yep.. there was one that ssid was "free public wifi" but i couldnt connect.. i went to the visitor center and asked about it.. they said the city is testing free public wifi downtown but it hasnt gone online 'yet'.. thats why i couldnt connect.. they prob have mac filtering on..

"free public wifi" is viral but not a virus.
It has to do with the way the adhoc networks morph.
It was originally started by someone. People try to attach to them and go home and attach to their AP. Their AP takes on that characteristc and "free public wifi" is spreading all over the country. -

http://www.techidiots.net/project-pages/vistumbler does work on vista :>

"Find Wireless access points - Uses the Vista command 'netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid' to get wireless information"
It's rather cheap. It's using a vista utility to get the information and pulling information from that.
Mine uses Vista's Native Wireless API and interfaces directly to it.
anyone use netstumbler?
