Looks like a compelling package, especially with the keyboard dock. Ultimately, though, price will be a big factor: if it can hit below, or at least at, the entry price of Zacate ultraportables such as the X120e, then it may be practical as a portable machine. Somehow, though, I doubt it'll be cheap, in which case the sheer number of tablet-supported apps on the iPad 2 make the Thinkpad Tablet a more difficult sell to both the general consumer and the business roadwarrior.

Nice to see it's using an IPS display though!

Also, Lenovo is very slow at releasing the Tablet for some reason, which will hurt its sale, especially when iPad 3 is going to be released at the end of this year or early next year.

I already got a 12" laptop and a smartphone. I don't really need another device in between, though I though the ThinkPad tablet had a lot of cool features that didn't seem to be offered on other tablets.

Count me in the not an Android fan club. I had a Galaxy S, which had a really nice screen, but the battery life was terrible. If I pulled it off the charger, went to work and didn't use it much, the battery life was half gone by the time I got home. I went back to the iPhone, which lasts 3-4 days under the same scenario. I heard, don't have any specific knowledge, a lot of Andriod phones are like this.

If you take the time to calibrate and manage it right almost all android phones will get you through the day easily. My Droid Incredible does a day an a half easy and its known to have terrible battery life when compared to most android phones. Also Tablets are a whole different ballpark than smartphones. I won't be buying one, but thats more because I have reservations about the tablet form factor. I just don't see it ever fitting into my lifestyle as a student. My mom, who only uses a computer to shop and email, could probably do everything she wants to do in a computer with the tablet.

I'm hearing $479 for price point. It's price competitive with the iPad at least. I find the digitizer pen interesting since I don't know of any other tablet which features a digitizer pen or even a pen in general that isn't third party. A keyboard dock that isn't horrible is also a nice addition.

If I were to buy a tablet, this would be a serious contender, but I lack need of a tablet. I have an ultraportable and a smartphone, I don't see any use for something in between.

I wonder how it will manage security as it seems aimed at corporate customers. Superior security compared to other tablets will be a killer feature in it's target market, like how businesses issue Blackberries rather than iPhones.

Trust me, I investigated the matter thoroughly. About the only thing that really did much to up the battery life was to change the background to black, which is kind of lame. Why should I settle for the day when Apple is giving me 3-4 days?

I kind of want this tablet really bad but android is actually steering me away from it. I hate tinkering - I just want something I can open out of box and use. so I will never be able to use android haha.. I'm sure galaxy s1 can indeed last longer if you fine tune it / use cyanogen or sth.I just don't have the patience for it anymore.

Lenovo can't put iOS on it since it is a proprietary technology. Android will have to do until MS releases win 8.

the HTC Flyer does, i got one and the pen is nice especially it does extra magic rather than just a stylus , but i'm definitely getting the thinkpad tablet instead of the X1 for the things it can do for me on the go as i was planning to replace my X300 with X1 but not anymore :)

The thinkpad tablet is compelling for the reasons listed above, but since Tegra 3 is supposedly releasing in tablets this fall, probably closer to the holiday season, I feel the $479 tag is a bit steep for a tegra 2 tablet. I'll probably bite on a Asus transformer 2 if it's released this holiday season but I would certainly holding out for an ipad 3 if it had a higher resolution screen. The screen size/ratio of the ipad imo is more appropriate for doing work such as reading documents than these 16:10 tablets when held vertically.

I thought I heard pricing would be in the $500 range to start for a 16gb tablet only. If thats the case its going to have a tough time competing with the Asus transformer, acer iconia and motorola xoom price breaks going on now. I dont think it will bust, but I doubt it will make any waves this late and at this price point.

Agreed. Between a new ipad the newer more powerful tegra 3 chips the thinkpad tablet is way too late. Now had it come out early summer I think it would have had a fighting chance (as well as it would have been my current tablet). But selling a full price tablet with soon to be last generation technology is not a good idea.

As an enterprise focused product the Thinkpad Tablet probably has a chance, but in the consumer space it would have very little chance. There are too many Android tablet devices, this Thinkpad device would be a mere drop in the ocean.

There is not enough differentiation, not enough consumer recognition (most people won't know this product ever existed), distributed only through selected retailers and finally it is not available in the market early enough (so i guess the supply chain management is not up to scratch).

When you are against so many competitions, you would need to have the right marketing and most importantly the right time frame for release.

For some reason lenovo discussed in length about ideapad U1, but they never released it. Would be nice if Thinkpad tablet copied this design, then it would be a paradigm shift, rather than just reinventing the wheel.

Until they come out with another tablet with handwriting recognition, this one is the one for me. I'll be trading up from my Motorola Xoom. I traded up from my iPad 1 for the Xoom earlier this year.

The only thing I liked about the iPad is that it held its value. Bought used, sold for same amount when I got rid of it 5 months later - just before iPad 2 dropped.

Android tablets (at least Xoom) match the iPad in battery - 10 hours of straight kindle reading. And the weight is similar. I switched off iOS because I don't enjoy being told what I can and can't do nor being charged $99/yr to develop for my device.

The primary use for the tablet is reading and since the actual kindle devices can't read PDFs for squat, I'm limited to tablets. I've been waiting forever to be able to use it for notes too... I'm drooling in anticipation.

When I was originally looking for a tablet to complement my thinkpads I first thought of this tablet. I waited and waited until months passed by and the only google links were the original april "leaked" of a possible thinkpad tablet. Well I had to buy and couldnt wait anymore so enter asus transformer. Had lenovo put this tablet out at the right time I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

But they didnt, they dragged their feet and are now putting out a honeycomb tegra 2 tablet right before tegra 3 and ice cream sandwich. Granted android is great with upgrades and does so very fast and very well, but still too late. I think they should have waited and put out the first tegra 3/ice cream sandwich tablet to the market and it would have sold on both consumer and corporate/government markets.

i had the XOOM compared to both my iPads (original and 2) its a bit heavy and bulky, thats why i liked the old galaxy tab 7" and i'm loving my HTC flyer now a days with its magic pen (stylus) for writing notes and such

as other said this is enterprise focused tablet which might replace my iPad2 and HTC flyer company meetings, the only down strain of the flyer it gingerbread not the honeycomb, other than that its great.

some people say the new galaxy tab is as light or even lighter than the iPad2 so that might be a win since its thiner than the iPad2

well only time can tell ;)

Recently, I got a low end smartphone (Galaxy Fit) and then I also got the Acer Iconia A500. Both complement my X201.

I have found the tablet + smartphone combo very helpful - especially when I am traveling (though I do carry my X201 sometimes to do some serious writing work when I am back in the hotel).

I picked the Acer because of (1) the USB port and (2) the MicroSD slot. This allows me a great deal of flexibility.

But a consequence of going with Android is that I have become even more integrated with the Google eco-system, which is OK for the moment.

What I am waiting for is Win8 and hopefully that would be put on a ThinkPad tablet. If this happens - and there is no reason why it should not - then I am going to go for the ThinkPad tablet. I just hope the tab comes with the USB and MicroSD feature. This is something that I find absolutely necessary in a tablet, which is also why I have stayed off the iPad attractive though it is.

I have a 15" laptop, and an iPod touch. There are times where a tablet would be nice to fill in the gap between my two devices. However, the gap just does not feel large enough to warrant a tablet purchase.

My mom has an iPad 2, and it is very nice. With the 3G, it is great for traveling / vacation. It makes it easy to stay in touch, and find out info about the area you are in. The bigger screen vs iPod / smartphones makes browsing all web sites a little nicer. However, again, on my last trip to Europe, I was able to find enough wifi to keep my iPod Touch very useful.

I went with the asus due to the microsd, SD, 2 USB and extra battery/keyboard dock. Its been great so far and with the keyboard its nice to be able to check and reply to emails or do little work things on the go and not have to bust out the laptop. Sure the laptop boots in 30 secs, but by the time I have booted, logged into my laptop and opened what software I need I could have done the task on the tablet.

I was like you once. I always figured that a smartphone and a laptop combo would be enough, and for the most part it still is. But the tablet helps out on alot of situations when on the go, at home and at the office. Like I stated above little tasks on the go are where it really shines. But when at work or home its great for complimenting my laptop and/or desktop that are overloaded. Working on a 4+ year old desktop and 2 x 2008 laptops they can get over loaded pretty fast. The tablet can pick up where the overloaded computers left off.

Looks to be on target for a near-release; the Thinkpad Tablet passed through the FCC:
